Title: Summer building
Post by: Sandy Nelson on 22/03/2020 at 11:45
Hi Folks

In case anyone is planning on a build this year, or perhaps even if you get trapped indoors and are looking for something different to do, just to let you all know, I have several blanks which I’m happy to sell on at cost plus postage, some have tubes to match and I have enough bits of flor cork/reel seats/ inserts/rings etc .
All of which I would do the same deal on, so basically everything you would need except the thread and the glues. Partial builds and full builds are also options.

At this precise moment I have the following.
Epic 476 Olive with Epic tube
Epic 580 Nude with epic tube
Epic 888 blue with epic tube
Epic 580 Amber with epic tube and bag
Livingston 703-3 black glass with no tube.

I have a batch of other glass blanks coming in a couple of weeks from Mike McFarland and they are a mixture of Black S glass and  amber E glass.  There is a number of different sizes and they are for me to experiment with to see if I can create a couple of Glass rods of my own for next year. These are to suit the kind of fishing we do here and hopefully fill a couple of niches in the current market.
After I have tried them out to see where I can take them, they will all also be available.

Just email or PM me if you are interested , at any point and we can see what we can do.  I can also help with advice etc should you pick something up from anywhere and need a few pointers.

Best wishes and stay healthy

Sandy

The Nude is in progress, so thought I’d share (with the customers permission) a few photos of progress over the last couple of day.
This one has a blue theme, with a Pewter REC seat that is a lovely shade of blue, so the rings are bright nickel and the wraps pale blue with two tone blue details.

Reminds me of Icemans helmet from Topgun , now the first coat of finish has been applied

I got the butt section finished and the rest of the 888 wrapped, so here’s a few in progress pics, with the customers permission.
Now it joins the queue for the rod turners.

Completed with a Crafty shrimp , apparently the #1 fly for Louisiana Redfish for which the build is intended.

Those photos really don't show the blue at its best and it still looks stunning. I took mine out in the sun as soon as I got it home, put the Teton #8 reel on it and just drooled down the front of my shirt.
Beautiful work as usual Sandy. The reel seat is very understated. :z16

So I have a few pictures from Iain’s 476 build progress that he’s happy for me to share.
He has turned his cork handle off the blank and then bored everything to fit.

Then they have been assembled into a lovely looking handle.

I’ve just got my hands on an Amber 580  4pc with epic tube and bag. Brand new current Zentron spec.  ( same style as the one we did the Forum specced build last year)
So this is available if anyone fancies a build or wants to have a go themselves. Same deal as per the first post.

888 is coming along nicely and now has its second coat of epoxy hardening off and then it will be cutting it back and smoothing it out and applying the final coat next week.

Both builds looking fantastic. I've got a PayBay Quickline 9wt here that I've just started and a 9'4wt Dancraft FTL that I'm rebuilding minus the bottom section to give me a 7'6".

Sandy, mind if I ask what pen/ink you used to draw the shrimp on the blank?

Cheers

Dan it’s one of these

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-130420192701.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=6058)

They cost me about a £1 from the range. I’d say one lasts 10 rods before it starts leaking then I chuck and get another.
Easy to use, clean and neat. Just leave it overnight to dry before epoxy and it works fine, no problems  :z16
I’ve black , gold and silver ones too just in case.

Sandy, looking good. Once all the travel restrictions are over and I head to Louisiana to the Lafayette office I aim to get a bend or two in the rod with some redfish.

Fast glass is much more robust than graphite for messing around in the back country. Thanks as always for an excellent build. I guess I will just have to content myself with a few practice casts in the garden for now.

Sandy,

The 888 arrived today. Took a couple of pics with the Sds bonefish reel and had a few casts on the grass. Looks ace and casts great, thanks again for an excellent build. Once lockdown is out of the way I hope to put a bend or two in the rod.

I got asked to build the Amber 580 for a customer.
He went for a classic Style build with red wraps, and agate with a nice spalted maple seat.

I now have my last remaining blank, a Livingston 7’ 3wt in Black Sglass in production. Have gone for a Celtic style etched reel seat. So will be quite different again. However it will be completed by next weekend, so I hope they let us go fishing soon. I’ve run out of things to make until my new range of blanks arrive at the end of June.

Title: Re: Summer building
Post by: Sandy Nelson on 16/05/2020 at 10:30
It’s vaguely Celtic. It’s also one I got as a one off, which I can get again if I wanted.

Nice cork too in a simple tapered grip.
(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-160520102752.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=6139)

Here there the silk wetted to match the wood. You can see the etching better too

Finished the Black Glass 7’3wt Livingston.
This is the perfect small stream rod. Roll casting, bows and arrows, tight quarters it’s perfect. When you do get space it can cast really well up to 50’ and you would never be doing that on a small burn. It makes every fish feel like a cracker. A great way to have a lot of fun away from everyone else.

Super clean Flor grade taper grip, etched downsliding seat with olive wood insert, apricot wraps over smoked snakes to match the wood and a lovely smooth coffee agate from Joe Arguello. Alignments dots too. I’ve got a tweed bag from Sandra and a glass fiber tube for it to live in.

That is unground, unvarnished black S glass. As light and as strong as you can make it. The glass fiber cloth itself is black so no paint.  What you see is how it is when the tape is removed.
It has a lovely texture but is very difficult to photograph.
The black glass has an amazing look when the light hits it, but I haven’t worked out how to capture the effect in pictures yet, this come close.
