Down Lochter way last week the Summer solstice came and went without too much meditation, chanting, dancing and general cavorting, so you could say it was a bit more low key. However looking out the bothy that morning across the Lochter vista the following verse came to mind:- ‘At the Summer Solstice all is green and growing, potential coming into being the miracle of manifestation painted large on the canvas of awareness’.
All very deep, but on the fishing front the opposite was the case and the top of the water was the place to be and some excellent sport was to be had.
Paul Keir used the traditional flies of Kate McLaren and the silver invicta to net 28 fish for his session. Pete Young used the classic dry and buzzers combination to land 23 fish from the Muckle Troot Loch.
Robert Devlin, on holiday from Lanarkshire, came for an evening session and wrote in the book he had a ‘crazy night’ as it would appear there had been a good ‘rise’ and he had 19 fish all taken on a ‘daddy’ fished briskly across the top of the water. Amongst his fish was a lovely 12lb specimen and a 8lb and 5lb also. It certainly would have been exciting seeing these big fish both moving towards your fly.
Looking through the returns book, R West had 18 fish on home tied buzzers, Albert Trail fished mops to get 13 fish, Graeme Duthie and Fred McAlley had 11 fish each on hoppers and CDC buzzers, Charlie Currie used shipmens buzzers to get 10 fish and Steve Prince on his two outings managed 7 and 9 fish on his usual combination of buzzers and diawl bachs.
With the passing of the longest day the pessimist amongst us might now be saying that ‘Winters drawing in’ but with high pressure building in for later in the week there will be no better time to enjoy the great outdoors and make time to cast a fly.
