At the weekend Louis Hamilton, starting from fourteenth on the grid had no chance of winning the German Grand Prix. Equally Francesco Molinari was long odds to win the open golf surrounded as he was by all the famous names from the golfing world.
We ended with two “upsets”, Hamilton and Molinari confounding both pundits and bookies to come out on top.
At Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum during the week there has been plenty of surface activity. The Muckle Troot Loch particularly has been boiling at times as fish sipped flies or buzzers off the top of the water.
Tempting them has been the skill – dries and small spiders and nymphs, the pundits’ choice, have been conscientiously ignored, splashed at but not taken. Downsizing did work to an extent but for Harry Hughes over from Kemnay, upsizing was the answer having failed to connect with his favourite dries and buzzers, he switched to an Ally McCoist and immediately began to score. That fly, plus a gold head damsel tempted ten fish – proof that there are times when the unfancied flies can come out on top.
At the start of the week when we had a little rain, Paul Ingram had eight on a hawthorn fly and M McLennan twelve on a black klinkhammer. On Friday as the weather warmed Albert Trail and Bill Wood had over twenty five between them and the Blobby Boys twenty one. A mix of blobs and diawl bachs did the trick. J. Brown used fabs to tempt eight and the ever-consistent Pete Green used a smoker and a carrot fly to bring fourteen to the net.
The fishing has been testing but with the right flies good bags can be made. Keep changing until you find one that works. Enjoy tight lines.
