Hi guys
We've been discussing running a wee flytying comp again this year.
The entries we get are usually great so we thought it would be nice to continue what is becoming a tradition.
So we will do three months, January February and March for the run up to the new season
There will be a nice prize for each month courtesy of Mr B.
This year the idea is to create a fly using a tried and tested material in a new and original way, the fly will be marked on originality, use of material, tying prowess and its potential to catch fish.
So for January the material will be Marabou
So let the creative juices flow and lets see what you all come up with :z16
Sandy
Pm myself, Hamish or Mike for details of where to send them, or drop them off at Haddo
-
Hi folks
Yes, this was good fun last year :z16
Prizes? ............. The winner each month can choose the Barrio Fly Line of their choice :z12
As per previous years, I think two examples of your entry fly please.
Great stuff
Mike
-
So whose up for it then :? Looking forward to this kicking off :z16
-
I'm game! What's the entry date?

But, if you feel your pattern needs to be 'explained', then please do include a wee description of how/why/what etc. :D
-
Hi guys,
Flies are in the mail, should reach you in time.

Kate McLaren Variant
Hook: Kamasan B 400, size 10 to 14
Thread: Black
Rib: Fine Silver Wire
Tail: Fluo Green or Fluo Yellow UV Krystal Hair Angel Hair
Body: Black Marabou (Dubbed)
Body Hackle: Black cock palmered
Head Hackle: Irish Olive cock 3 to 4 turns and tied back.
Step 1: Lay up touching turns of Black thread to above hook point.
Step 2: Then tie in the Fluo Green or Fluo Yellow UV Krystal Hair.
Step 3: Trim to length you require and then tie in a single strand of
Fine Silver Wire.
Step 4: Tie in your Black Cock Palmering Hackle.
Step 5: Chop up some Black Marabou & dub onto thread.
Step 6: Make a slim body up to a point behind the eye – ensure you
leave plenty of room for a head!
Step 7: Wind Palmering Hackle in evenly spaced turns towards the
head & tied off & trim.
Step 8: Run the Rib in the opposite direction to the head and secure.
Step 9: Tie in your Irish Olive Cock Hackle and make 3 or 4 turns
and tie back, keeping some space between the Hackle and
the eye of the hook for your head.
Step 10: Whip finish, cut the thread & apply a few drops of varnish.
I find that by using Marabou as a dubbing material you increase the amount of colours/shades
available to you.

Great stuff Alex :z16

Peter "rabbitangler"
The fly was inspired by the hedgehog series of dries. The tying is quite simple.
Hook - #10 Kamasan b830 2x Ls
Body - Dubbed mix of bright green SLF & bright green glister
Tail & Wings Black marabou.
The wing body combination is a classic early blend. You could have any of your favourite mixes.
My thoughts were to add mobility by having several separate finer wings rather than one big bunch, should help the wrap around problems too I hope.

Irvine "Hares Lug"
Hook : Partridge Salar single size 9 - 11
Thread : Yellow
Tag : Flat silver tinsel
Tail : Golden Pheasant topping
Body : rear half - holographic gold flat tinsel, front half - claret Ice Dub
Hackle : Barred golden olive marabou
Wing : Fiery brown Arctic fox tail
The tying is standard for any hair wing salmon fly except for the hackle. Use the non-fluffy tips of the marabou plumes and tie in in small bunches then spread evenly around the fly before tying tight. Just like putting bronze mallard on a dabbler. The idea is to have a long supple hackle that will flutter in low summer flows.

BODY-chopped marabou same colour, dubbed on using wax.
RIB-pearl mylar - marabou same as above
THORAX COVER-marabou same as above
THORAX-olive ice dub
I,ve fish this pattern quite a lot, from the small still waters to the big waters such as menteith rutland gratham etc and has produced fish.Fish on the point with a few daiwl bachs or buzzers behind on a floater or fish on a sinking line point or dropper doesn,t really matter, try in colours black and orange these work well when the waters coloured.all the best and tight lines for 2008.

Jeroen "Dutchfly"
This fly, the T&A Bunker, was origanally designed by American Kelly Galloup to imitate.... the action of a jointed Rapala. It uses a trailer hook and a lead hook, jointed by a loop of monofilament. On both hooks Marabou is used for the body (palmered) and for the wing. The pattern requires ram's wool for the head, but this variation is very effective. The original was tied with an olive wing over a white body.
Trailer hook: #8 TMC 105
Body: 2 palmered plumes of marabou
Wing: marabou
Loop: nylon monofilament
Beads: glass beads from a craft store
Lead hook: #4-6 TMC 8089
Flashy tail: flashabou or similar
Body: 2 palmered plumes of marabou
Wing: marabou
Head: flashy chenille
Eyes: doll eyes
This colourcombination works for me in the Dutch polders when I'm fishing for winterpike (no need for half chickens where I fish...). Go crazy with this pattern and see what happens!

Hook Size 10 B175 or equivalent (one used are hyabusa)
Hot spot dubbed Orange Marabou
Body olive micro chenile
Tail Olive Green marabou
Gold Bead 3mm
Rib peacock tinsel (lightly stretched)
Thread Green 6/0 supergrip
This is a variation on a fly that has caught a lot of fish I usually tie them without the orange hot spot. It is a fairly basic fly but very effective. I fish it on a floating line with a jerky retrieve at the point with a spider on a dropper. It is best fished near the edge or over weed beds.

Drowned Buzzer
Hook : Kamasan B100N
Thread : Black
Rib : Silver wire
Thorax : Pearl tinsel over varnished thread
Abdomen : Ice dub Peacock
Wing : Polypropylene
Instructions : Lay an even body of tying thread along the shank of the hook and then coat with varnish/head cement. Wind on two layers of pearl tinsel while the varnish is wet adding another coat of varnish between the first and second layers. This gives the tinsel a blue translucent look. Tease out some of the dubbing to look like crumpled legs.
This is meant to be an easy tie version of Stan Headley's Half Hog and represents a drowned, half-emerged buzzer. The wing is intended to add some buoyancy and stop the fly from sinking quickly so it can be fished near the surface.

Gamrie Harvestman
Hook - Kamasan B400
Thread - Black 8/0
Body – Chartreuse Grizzle Hackle
Tail - stretched pearl tinsel
Legs – Knotted Pheasant Tail Fibres (2 forward, 2 Middle & 2 rear)
Step 1
Mount the hook in the vice, attach the thread, wind down to a point opposite the hook point.
catching in the pearl Tinsel.
Step 2
Wind the Pearl Tinsel round bend & forward again in tight turns stretching the material slightly tie in then trim off.
Step 3
Catch in 2 sets of 2 legs pointing rearwards, then holding 1 leg either side towards the eye of the hook wrap 1 turn of thread around to hold the legs in a position approximately 90˚ to hook. Then tie in final set of legs pointing forward.
Step 4
Return thread in tight turns back to the point where the base of the middle legs touch the hook.
Step 5
Prepare your Hackle by snipping the centre, wrap hackle around filling the space up to hook eye leaving enough room for a head, trim the waste hackle and cover the butts with tight turns to form a very small head, just behind the front legs, whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly.

Coroxia imitation
Hook 16 B175 or equivalent
a few wraps of fine lead wire
Body pearl tinsel.
Thread green or black
hackle partridge
shell back nymph skin coluored green with pantone type pen (usually I use brown but thought I'd give green a go)
Clear as mud instructions
Put a base layer of thread
Add a couple of wraps of fine lead wire to the middle of the hook
Tie in a piece of nymph skin cut into a V shape
Tie in the tinsel and build the body tie off at the front.
Prepare a partridge hackle so you have a half dozen fibres in a V shape. Tie in on top of the body.
Pull over the nymph skin and tie in and form a head and whip finish.
Colour the nymph skin and varnish the head.
The reason for the lead is that when you watch coroxia they tend to rise to the surface in a vertical direction and then dive straight back down. the lead helps the nymph sink quickly and when used with a series of short sharp pulls rises quickly. That's the theory and when there a coroxia about this has caught a lot of fish.

CLARET CDC BUBBLE HOPPER
Hook - Kamasan B400
Thread - Claret 8/0
Body – Dubbed Claret (Possum / Kangaroo)
Rib - stretched pearl tinsel
Bubble Wing – Natural CDC
Thorax - Dubbed Claret (Possum / Kangaroo)
Legs – Knotted Pheasant Tail Fibres (tied in 3’s)
Step 1
Mount the hook in the vice, attach the thread, wind down to the bend catching in a piece of red Holographic Tinsel as a tail piece wind it round the bend about 3mm and back to your tying thread. Catch in the Pearl Tinsel rib & 2 sets of legs as you go back towards the eye of the hook, then return thread to the bend.
Step 2
Sparsely dub thread and Wind forward followed by the rib(in the opposite direction)
leaving enough room for a thorax & a head.
Step 3
Catch in the two CDC feathers, these will form the bubble.
Step 4
Add another generous pinch of dubbing to the thread, then wrap to form the thorax.
Step 5
Pull the two CDC fibres over to form the bubble, leave any straggly fibres as they are. You can alter the size of the bubble wing to suit using a needle.
Step 6
Prepare the Hackle by snipping the centre, wrap hackle around 2 or 3 times trim the waste hackle and cover the butts with tight turns to form a small head, whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly.

Hook - Curved Grub in this case #16
Thread - Black
Body - Black floss & Fine pearl furled so as to leave a short shuck length of pearly behind body.
Thorax -Hares ear
'Wing Buds' - the ends of the body tinsel
Wing (optional) - CDC
The wing was added but could be omitted if you want a sinking fly.
I suppose this is a variation on a palomino midge pupa, though the body should (!) be a tad more robust.

Sorry for the delays guys
But yesterday we managed to get the Flies for the first 2 months marked.
Mike will post the results as soon as poss. :z16
However we were missing quite a few entries for March, i dont know how many are in the post, but we have decided to let it run till the 15th of April due to more work commitments :roll
The first 2 months were very close with the marks and i would be a pity if people missed the last month, overall as you have seen from the photos the quality of the flies has been high and some of the ideas and usage of materials have been very innovative :z16 the kind of thing we hoped for.
Marking them based on, use of materials, originality, tying skill, fishability and consistancy and marking each category out of 5 has thrown up a very close contest :wink
So get them last entries in please :z16
Sandy
-
Hi folks

Can only echo Mike and and Sandys comments, some extraordinarily well tied flies and some very original thinking in the use of materials.
It's a close run thing overall and the standard has been high which is reflected in the very close marking from three different judges - so come on chaps :!
Get the last flies with CDC as the material of choice tied and sent in now before the revised deadline :z17

Dont want to seem premature on this but I think all the results are in  So long as we've had all the entries.......
Mike, Sandy and I did complete the marking so hopefully Mr B will be posting the results shortly :z16
Ooooooooh it's exciting :wink
-
Come on Mike, stop teasing us and post the results! :z7 :z7 :z7
-
You have to give to poor old man a chance.
He'll get there.................................
.....................eventually :z4
I can tell you the end results were unbeliveably close.
Considering there were 3 months, 3 judges, 5 categories marked out of 5, it ended up with just 3 points between the top 3 :wink
Brilliant flies all round :z16 well done everyone :z16

Well done everyone who entered, some belting flies in there :z16 Couple of ideas I might even "borrow" myself :z4
Bearing in mind there were 3 very different judges it's remarkable that 1st-3rd place are split by a mere 2 points over 3 rounds :!
Excellent stuff
And ...... what the XXX??? happened with Rob? ???
Now that is a good question..... hmmmmmmm :cry
-
Well you could knock me down with a feather! and that's what I though Peter and Mike would do. When I saw the photos of their flies I was sure one of them would win :z14
There was some great patterns and lovely tying on display by everyone who entered and now we have an on-line resource of fly patterns for anyone to copy.
A big thank you to Mike, Hamish and Sandy for giving their time and making it all possible :z16
Jings :shock
Irvine
-
I thoroughly enjoyed it as usual :z16
I can only apologise it took so long to get the marking done, but unforseen trips for both Hamish and myself made things more tricky, still we got there in the end
Great to see people thinking about the materials and what they are good for, that was the idea.
Some great ideas appeared and some cracking flies.Well done to all Again :z16
I would add that a lot of people lost marks for consistancy between the two flies.
So for next year, you can bear that in mind :wink
:z18
