It has been great watching the Commonwealth Games this past week and seeing the Scottish team getting among the medals. It’s the turn of the athletics department this week to keep the tally going, so good luck to them.
Sunday saw the Spring Singles Competition at Lochter Fishery, Oldmeldrum. The event had been postponed from March due to inclement weather and what a lovely spring day the twenty-two anglers got for their outing.
There was plenty of surface action throughout the day with the warmer conditions encouraging steady hatches of flies. This in turn led to plenty of temperature rising, catching action for the anglers.
Buzzers, diawl bachs and damsel nymphs worked well but anglers had to keep ringing the changes to keep the fish coming to the net and when the scores were in they showed a total of 173 fish caught and released.
Topping the points scoring league was Paul Sharp with 34, one point ahead of Andrew Barrowman, with the bronze medal going to Stuart Crockett. A special mention for young Jasmine McPhee who gave dad, Charlie, a good run for his money in the competition.
During the past week sport has been steady as the milder conditions brought the water to life.
Karen Gillies, with fifteen all on buzzers, wiped the eye of partner Pete Green who only managed ten and earlier in the week Ronnie Ewan had over twenty nice fish using a mix of cormorants and diawl bachs.
There were quite a few double figure bags to bring smiles to the anglers’ faces. S. Sim had fourteen using that well-known fly, the “Various”. The McPhersons had eighteen each using woolie worms, while Fred McAlley and Sam Scobie caught and released nine a piece using diawl bachs.
The spring is showing definite signs of being here which is great news for anglers.
