So who's venturing out tomorrow? If the weather holds out there could be some bumper hatches. I'm just hoping the wind eases up!

Great to be back  out on running water again today. Decent weather, nice water and good company.

My first run of the day produced the fish below. The usual Ptn fished Duo style did the trick. Great fight and fantastic condition for this time of year.

Liam's fish was a belter. Epic, in fact:

I opened the season with a nice, but slightly skinny, trout of just over 2lbs, on a 16 cdc emerger.
Flies, and surface trout, were scarce today, but still a fine day to be back on the river

Indeed it was a lovely day to be out.

I managed to spook every fish i went near, although there were not very many, so a blank for me, but the young un's fish was a beauty as you can see and i think it made everyone's day :z16

Will post the video when i get it sorted :z18 although the punchline is out of the bag :z4

Arrived around 1.30 and a few fish just starting to show.
Opened my account with two nice fish in the 8 to 10 oz range both sighted, both covered both took first time so first two fish covered, first two casts of 2017 and two fish, 100% record  :z4 :z4  None other than size 12 Olive DHE for me, what else could it be  :z4 :z4

Cracker of a fish Liam and lovin the pic Iain.

Round 2 today for me :z16

Hatch started at 11.30 and lasted till 1pm, it started with LDO's and finished with March Browns.
I found a good number of fish rising in a reasonably sheltered stretch so i got off the mark for the year in style as well :z18 Not quite as big as Liams fish yesterday, but a 20"er to kick things off will do me just fine :z12

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-160317170156.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4042)

Managed to fool a few good ones had 5 in total, from 12"-20" with a couple of 16"er's to keep things fun

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-160317170243.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4043)

The plume tip picked up where it left off last spring :z16 although when the olives petered out and it became March browns dominating, the fish seemed to disappear. All damn good fun despite the wind. The bamboo coupled with a Smallstream5 punched its way through any breeze , well impressed :z18

Nice day today

Breeze got up in the afternoon, but despite the cold water (5'C, last week its was nearly 8'C) There was a rather good hatch of these little beauties

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-220317192406.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4056)

met up with some good mates and had a grand catch up, then to business once the fish decided to actually feed off the top.
My best of the day took a plume tip, 18" and in cracking condition, more like a May fish than a March one.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-220317192538.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4057)

A few more over the course of the afternoon and an enjoyable day, Young Mr Stephen picked up a few as well :z16 as you will see shortly :z16

Duo to start as always!  :z7 :z4

2.5lb and around 18". A bit lean but he will be nice in a month or so.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-220317194242.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4060)

Then dries when the hatch got going. My best on the dries was 13" but I did get a ST kelt and a nice little finnock.

First day out this season and good to catch up with Iain and Sandy and also to meet Liam. I am so glad that Liam did not show the telly tubby/Kermit outfit until after the fishing was finished.

I saw a few fish rising and managed to spook a couple and prick the other one while all the other guys had some success. I was about to move to another pool as the hatch was petering out when I met Liam coming up the bank. I went up to show Liam where I had seen a couple of fish rising earlier as we sat on the bank blethering and the fish rose again. Liam graciously told me that I should give it another shot so I waded in and got in position. As per sods law as soon as I got into position the wind got up and although it was not an issue to shoot the line into place the blo##y fly was being blown towards the bank about 6 feet off target for about half a dozed casts. All of a sudden the wind dropped and the fly (fortunately landed in position A up he came and after a short but spirited fight a wee 12" trout in spanking condition as in the net and quickly released without a photo. Not a trophy but very welcome first of the season and a very happy boy.

Thanks for the day out guys, most enjoyable hope to see you on the bank again soon.

Eddie. :z18

A solitary 12" troot???

Liam, he's just jealous. He talks of days gone by when he used to catch trout of memorable proportions.  I strongly suggest that you carry on with your onesie, safe in the knowledge that these older gents can only dream of the caliber of trout that our youthful abilities are capable of capturing.

Dad,

Its beginning to look like we need to have a day or two together on the river again  :z7

Steven,

Whilst I may be impressed not jealous of the trout that Liam had today and on his other visits, I am certainly not in the least bit jealous of his attire. And yes we do need to get out on a river sometime soon to see if the old guys have still got it or not. I have a feeling that I will be content with whatever the trout gods are willing to share with me and that you will frenetically trying to prove your manliness while I am enjoying the moment. I have reached the point where fishing means more than size or numbers of fish and I am sure that all of us get there in the end.  It is great to see some young blood with passion for our noble art and I am happy to see them doing well even if you remind me that I am getting old and missing takes. I was one of you young boys once but now I am a guy who enjoys the day. However next time on the river I am going to show you that us old boys can still fish a bit.

Let's have a dry fly only day and see what happens😁😁

A sneaky couple of hours this afternoon.

Water low, very clear, now running 8'C, Bright sunshine, little cover....what could go right :X1

Lots of flies hatching off but not a single rising fish to be seen, so i opted for the dark side and went pocket picking in the deeper channels with a wee PTN.

First day of the season for me today, and first time on the Deveron. Great to open my account with one on the nymph and two on dries - a PTN and size 14 DHE respectively. Nothing big, but chuffed all the same.

There was a brief hatch of what looked like both MBs and LDOs between 11 and 12 and for a period of about 30 seconds an almighty cloud of flies came down the river on the wind - and then it was all over.

Looking forward to returning...

a wander and a daunder up the Deveron today - 6 hours, 8km and apparently 4,500 calories consumed (burnt off, not eaten by me). Not sure the calorie count is accurate as I spent most o the day watching water in which no fish rose.

Finally, around 2pm, some olives and scutter of MBs brought a big nose up a nosing. My first trophy trout of 2017 was worth the wait, netting in at 3 1/4lb. On a size 18 plume tip thing that looks nothing like a MB. :-)

another Deveron outing today, though cut short by increasingly uncooperative downstream, in-ma-face, winds.

Had a cast at three trout. One came in at 2lb, which I'd have been happy with in the conditions. But a wee flurry of MBs brought up a better lad, that netted in at 3 & 3/4lbs, so I was delighted with meself.

He had been moving about hoovering up the flees. I'd planted my backside on a rock at the tail of the pool. He popped up right in front of me, about two rod lengths away - a wee flick of the fly out to my side was all it needed to fool him. Me still sitting down, of course.

called it a day at 2.30 as the wind just became horrendous

I'm sure I was reading about those tags the other day in a DBIRCT newsletter, but I'm not sure where.... I'm pretty sure they are the tags the Moray firth trout initiative were using when they were recording the movements of the fish a couple of years ago.

Ref. your tagged trout.   That is a standard type of tag used widely for tagging both trout and salmon.  If you had looked closely the tag would have shown an individual identification number, and a telephone contact number  for reporting capture details.

Yesterday was a great day on the water to be had with the 'Young Gun', and I finally got to meet Allan, Iain and Simon  :z16

Fishing regular tactics proved to be successful, only once we'd found fish gorging in their summer lies already.  Liam got off the mark with a nice Seatrout Kelt, followed by myself with a few fish up to the 1.5lb mark.

It was Liam again who landed another cracking fish, this one being 3.5lb on the nose - what a fuss it held on the 476!

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/11610-090417120440.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4148)

In the same stretch of water I landed my best of the day at a cool 2lb. Not the biggest, but fought well above its weight on the 580. I had another of slightly bigger proportions however it was dropped at the net  :X1

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/11610-090417120757.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4149)

Once the hatch really going it was plain sailing from then on and fish continued to be brought to the net. A large flurry of MBs accompanied by a few olives really brought the water alive. Covering most risers first or second time proved easy business :z16

Back to work next week sadly  :cry but hopefully I'll be out again soon (some of us have to work  :z4 :z4)

Cheers,
Ash  :z16

Not to be outdone a wee report on how i've fared so far:
Plenty fish keen to take a DHE or two although still surprising to see so many MB's being ignored.  Also found a wee bit frustrating when fish locked onto emerging nymph and ignoring even the half in DHE style patterns.

Anyway plenty fish so far with a load in the pound plus range, a few in the noteable two plus range and one trophy 3lb 3oz with one other lost and one missed (in front of witnesses  :oops)  A few fresh run finnock as well just for added spice.  So far so good.

Good to hear of the tagged fish capture, Ali did you check to see if some of the other fish you caught had hook marks on them as i know exactly where you were  :wink :wink :z4 :z4

I was on the Deveron on Sunday after 6 days of wind, it was nice to fish without it again. The fishing was excellent and lots of fish were caught upto around 2lb.  I watched my buddy hook and loose a fish around 5lb, gutted for him as he lost a good one the day before as well. I added another few pics to the trophy album. 23" and somewhere between 4.5-4.75lb. A big dark brute of a trout!

Anyone care to guess the fly it fell for? May offer a prize for the first right answer!  :z7

As per the Don post, the week with Andrew didn't pan out the way we had hoped.
The plan was for 2 days on the Deveron, we did achieve that, but not quite as planned :X1

Tuesday we arrived at a rising river, although the main flow of the Deveron was fishable the Isla was rapidly turning Milk Chocolate brown and altering things. The weather continued from Monday and we did try and stick it out.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417110328.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4267)

The fishing was very tough and we ended up with one fish between us, even the grass was growing legs and trying to shelter in the car.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417110524.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4268)

With the stinging rocks from the heavens, i wasn't surprised..... another trip to the pub beckoned

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417110635.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4269)

Thursday  was to be our second attempt, but the river rose a lot overnight and was fully blown come morning, so we scrapped that plan and headed for the Lower Don, the Deveron water levels often lead the Don by a day or so.

Friday came, Andrew feeling tired, was quite pragmatic about things, but we wanted to get some fishing before he left, so a scouting trip using the Webcams, SEPA website and one of us in car driving around, meant we found a fishable river, we headed upstream on the Deveron above the main tributaries. We found a river running like 90 shilling Ruby Ale but the weather had improved and at least Casting would be less of a chore.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417111252.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4270)

Not an easy day, but some fish were caught, the highlight of the week being a single rising fish spotted on friday afternoon slurping down the odd Upright that floated over his nose. Getting into position with the nymph set up, a couple of speculative casts revealed it was reachable, then an altercation with a tree on the backcast relieved me of the nymph, so what the hell...... dryfly on, wool removed. 1 cast, 1 rise, 1 fish, the ensuing fight had me running from rock to rock as it headed downstream through streamy water , stumbling down the banks faster than i have moved for a good while, then having to negotiate a tree which i only just managed to reach over, fortunately the fish decided to to stop running in a pool just ahead of another tree i didn't have a hope of getting past. It put a grand old bend in the bamboo rod.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417112220.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4271)

Not my biggest of the season, but definitely my best so far, a real sense of achievement at the end of a long week, and yes, it did end up being my last cast of the week, the Steeplechase finished me off, but what a way to go :z18

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-290417112425.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4272)

Hopefully next time Andrew comes up, we get better conditions, but it was a challenge and the company made it worth while  :z18

Nice fish.  I've never tried the  Deveron, I probably should give it a go sometime.

I do love the Don anywhere upstream of Alford though.  I wish I lived closer to streamier water, I always find the lower Don too slow for my ideal liking,

I can only thank you Sandy from the bottom of my heart for trying so hard this last week. Not the conditions I'd hoped for when we organised this months ago, but that's fishing.  I've caught enough fish in my life not to get upset when I don't, BUT I'd love to come back and have another go for one of your 'special' fish.  Meeting and fishing with you and Liam was everything I'd hoped for in terms of friendship and bankside cameraderie. I could not have wished for a warmer welcome, it was just so disappointing that your weather gave me the diametric opposite.  :cry

By Friday I was indeed knackered, four solid days of lobbing tungsten into the wind does that to me, and I'm not the fishing machine young Liam is.  But when all's said and done, I've come away having cemented firm friendships I hope and looking forward to returning another year.  You both worked your socks off to find fishable water every day, and despite beat after beat being wrecked you always managed to come up with something. :z16 I've returned home with some wonderful memories, I've learned a lot (every day is a school day) and look forward to our next meeting with eager anticipation.

I'd have posted photo's but for some reason the forum doesn't recognise any of my photobucket stuff, and you've already put a good few up.

:z18 to you both and to Scott whose company I thoroughly enjoyed on my last day. You guys can fish!!!  :z14 :z14

It was our pleasure, just a shame the way conditions played out, you are welcome anytime. For being out of your comfort zone you can fairly fish yourself :z16

A Tough tough weekend with the other half  :z7 on two different beats - driving southerly winds on both occasions made basic casts difficult, and most fish I hooked seemed to have found how to arrive at anywhere but my net  :z8 - I was not to be beaten however, as I finally managed to land a new PB today which is also my first ever trophy.. I'm still smiling yet  :z14

Brilliant stuff guys.
Guiding for two French lads Thurs, Fri and Sat and it was tough.
After finding all the river blown out Thurs i took them to Loch Park and both enjoyed it catching some nice fish before heading to the shops in search of Scottish Speyside Nectar.
Friday and i knew where to head (not far from you Sandy  :wink) and again both enjoyed it immensely with some excellent fish on dries (proper fishing)
Saturday and a different beat again (after a wee tying demo by yours truly on request from the guests) , this time cracking hatches, loads of fish on dries best nudging 2lb.
All in all a good result after some tough weather.

And to round it all off, i grabbed a quick hour n half after the guests had left although had to resort to the 'Wee Boy Method' (Liam knows what i mean) and picked off 5 fish best of which weighed in at 3lb 1/2 oz woo hoo  :z12 :z12
Photos to follow once i can be bothered to take them off my camera  :z4

Got forglen tomorrow, anyone fished it before?

HI Ali

No internet access last night, so no updates till now :z16
We fished Muiresk Yesterday and arrived to find fish rising at 10am to Olives, the olives continued to hatch all day right up until i left at 6pm to get back to the pub for the evening talks etc.
The fish however were not all doing the same thing, we spotted about 3 different sizes of Upright as well as LDO's Small Plume tips seemed to be the best way forward

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517183609.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4325)

Lots of chunky fish wanting to play and putting up a great scrap, but nothing Massive, My best for the day was this one

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517183723.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4326)

Which went like a train and finished the day off nicely

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517183819.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4327)

Today we were on Mountblairy, so the next beat down from you, the wind was a bitch so had to resort to plinking nymphs in runs where you could get a cast out, some nice fish kicking around, again really chunky devils :z16

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517184016.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4328)

This one really had eaten all the pies :shock

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517184111.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4329)

Got sick of nymphing after a while so we headed to marnoch to see if there was any risers and some shelter.
Decent afternoon, picking off some nice fish with the plume tip.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517184227.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4330)

Plenty good sized fish coming to the dry, but again no sign of any slabs.

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517184333.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4331)

With uprights coming off, that were quite pale in colour

(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-070517184449.jpeg) (https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=4332)

I also noticed a few Small dark olives, which are also quite pale, and low and behold the Broom was starting to Bloom, so a yellow based plume tip made all the difference.

The festival weekend was excellent, many thanks to all those who supported it especially Frank and Ritchie for organising it :z18, lots of informative talks and some great knowledge was shared, plus access to some of the more restricted beats, made for an excellent weekend.

Cheers

Sandy

Ptn on the duo.
Very surprised how well the 3wt recon casts a 4wt small stream line! Saves me having to carry 2 rods in the work motor.

Only stopped for an hour in the passing during work so didn't want to waste time re tying my tippet.  There were only very small fish showing or so I thought.  Think it's lesson learned  as it was nerve wracking when he decided to sit mid stream and refuse to move until serious pressure was applied.

Very surprised how well the 3wt recon casts a 4wt small stream line!

I am using a 3 weight Sage with a 4 weight SLX and the combination is lovely for river work. The heavier line slows everything down nicely. :)
