How u getting on with tying the ceramic buzzers Liam. When I get home got a fly that worked well for me over the summer I will post a photo. Ah the best james
-
Hi James :z16
They are still a work in progress........ I've tied a good few and caught on them but I'm still not 100% happy with them yet.
:z18
-
Looking forward to having a go at topping up my fly boxes over the winter ..... and seeing if my eyes are still up to the job :z6
I'll post a few pics Liam, even if they turn out to be as poor as I suspect they will :z4
Cheers

My version of Paul Proctors APT.
(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P5300023.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P5300023.jpg.html)
This fly in a couple of slightly different versions (including this one) took my 2 biggest fish of the season, among many others.
Pauls dressing leaves loads of room for personal tweeks and has to be one of the best general purpose patterns ever created.

I'll be receiving some nice Gallos De Leon feathers from Spain soon ..... looking forward to putting them to good use

An update on the nymph box. Should be full in no time then it's onto the ceramics.

Anyone in tying mode yet?
:z18
-
Anyone in tying mode yet?
Yup :wink
-
Me too!
Salmon - I have a dozen Stoats Tails to do on singles and about half a dozen odds and sods and that's it done.
Trout - No more than a dozen or so mixed and that is that done too.
Salt - A few more Crazy Ivans and some "prototypes".
Orders - I have one order coming in for sure for about two dozen trout flies but I might have a few more after that.
And of course there is the whisky factor - Two or three drams, the creative juices start flowing and there you are back at the vice making a sure fire killer! :z4 :z4 :z4
:z1
-
Do share Hamish! :z16
Ewan it's sounds like you are either a man with confidence in a handful of patterns or you don't give your flies up to rocks, trees, weeds and friends in need like I do.......? :z4 :z7 :wink
Liam
-
Liam,
Yes and yes!
I used to have boxes and boxes and boxes of trout flies and after keeping a diary for two years I found out that I only used a handful of flies to catch all my fish. Now I have a Loch box and a River box, with some crossover flies in the Loch box.
My Salmon flies are one box of doubles and singles and one box of tubes. To be honest I don't use that many patterns, just ones that I have used for a very long time and have a lot of faith in. There's a black one, a silver one, a black and blue one, some yellow and some orange ones, and some little Scandinavian ones. :z4 (There is a spares box for bad days but it usually stays in the bag unless I am having a really bad day)
I used to spend a lot of time sitting looking at all the pretty flies and not having one in the water, which kinda defeats the purpose. I do lose flies in trees and on rocks but when I get home I usually replace them pretty quickly. I carry three flies in each size that I use. I will get some photos posted this week.
-
Liam,
This is what I normally carry.
Salmon 1
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064734.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3821)
Salmon 2
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064757.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3822)
Loch 1
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064821.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3823)
Loch 2
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064850.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3824)
River 1
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064924.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3825)
River 2
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/13-251016064947.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3826)
There are times that I don't have the right thing but it still beats carrying too many and scratching your head. :z4 I find that the salmon fishing in particular is simpler with a lesser collection and you will not find me changing flies half way down a pool.
I only fish for Rainbows maybe twice a year so not too many Rainbow flies. The Brown trout flies for lochs are all old favourites and the river flies are what gets me by. Now if I did a lot more river fishing the selection would probably change. The size of the box wouldn't change, just the selection.
All my boxes are Caimore double sided clear views, which, for the money, are just excellent.
Maybe I am just odd! :wink
:z1
-
Maybe I am just odd! :wink
Nah! i would never say that.................. :z4 :z4 :z4
-
Euan, those of us who fish and tie are all odd to those who dont,
however i took your one box idea to the next level up in Sutherland during the last week of the trout season. I tied on two flies to fish with on the first day and promptly misplaced the box that they came from.
even though I had other boxes I just fished with the same two flies apart from one day of flat calm when a CDC emerger did the business.
4 days with the same two flies and my catches were still ok.
Maybe the one box principle is the way forward.
I will still continue to tie and carry way too many as it is just the way I am.
Eddie. :z18
-
Eddie,
The "One box" project sort of worked as long as it was one for lochs, one for rivers, one for salmon, one for tubes and one for salt! :z4
The salmon doubles and singles box was the easiest to do. The tube fly box was not so easy but after a season it got pruned back brutally and I am now happy with it. It doesn't get used a lot and on the last couple of days on the Dee, Beauly and Ness it stayed in the bag and the doubles box was my only companion.
The trout loch box was easy but rather than carry a separate Rainbow box I amalgamated the two, something that might change for next year. Another wee box full of buzzers, lures and reservoir dries might have to happen. This would free up space in the loch box for a couple of "prototypes" :wink
I do think that if you present two flies to Highland trout and one of them is black and the other is claret then you can't really go wrong (most of the time)
Right now I am very happy with where I am and feel that I could go anywhere in the UK and have something that would catch most species. Maybe not specialised, but able.
I have also sorted out a lot of my tackle for the tail end of this year and the start of next year to suit the simple box approach, but that will be a different thread.
:z1
-
Hi all here is a fly I tied it works very well for me on small waters it is similar to a Pittsford pea it works very well on small waters. The body is gel core micro body size 14 and the trusty Flexi cat photos below. There not in the box yet just been busy tying up some flies. I don't do much rivers yet but in time maybe
-
Nice one HF! :z16
These guys have received some bad press lately so I had to try them.
The Mop:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-261016175816.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3832)
The small (14) one looks ideal for the Don and Deveron Caddis. The large one (12) is a little chunky but you never know.......
Now to find a yellow and cream mitt to steal bits from.
:z18
-
Ahh, the Bead Head Booger! :z4 :z4 :z4
In an odd way I like them. I read this on the Flyfisherman.com website,
“I’m sorry guys, but I absolutely hate the mop,” said one keyboard warrior. “I was fishing late summer one time and was doing ok and decided to try a mop for the first time. I watched fish that weren’t even feeding go out of their way to eat it. No matter if I dragged it, made a good drift, left it dangle in the current while I waded upstream, fish were literally moving 3 ft or more to eat it. It is definitely a deadly fly, but it required no skill, drift, or any of the technical aspects that makes fly fishing challenging and great.”
“Forget the Squirmy. Forget the egg flies. The Mop Fly is the most sinful fly of all time,” says a headline on the Flymen Fishing Co. web site."
I am off out to the shed where my alloy wheel cleaning noodle mop lives with some scissors..... Bwa ha ha :z4
:z1
-
I'm definitely in the 'fish very few patterns camp'.... I just carry them in a variety of sizes. Tying these at the moment Liam, the 'Appleby Olive jig' which is my 'go to' river nymph. Like nigh on all my flies, it's tied as a scruffy mess of a thing that could be a number of food items. I tie it in 14's and 16's.

They're what Sandy would term 'ammunition'.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n585/Peldonman/Camera/20160823_155746.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Peldonman/media/Camera/20160823_155746.jpg.html)
-
They look fishy Andrew ...... nice
-
Nice one Andrew :z16
I've still got the ones you sent me. I must admit I didn't try them though as the back end dry fly was too good! March will be swimming time for them with a PTN on the dropper.
:z18
-
Thanks Mike, they've worked in every river I've fished them and a friend found it his most successful nymph in New Zealand, so I'm confident in fishing them... which is half the battle.
No worries Liam, they should do the business when you do swim them... let me know. And here are a few of my bog standard stillwater pattern... Scruffy buzzers, simple and messy, I tie them with and without a bead head and they catch me nigh on all my fish until I turn to fishing mainly dries May/June time.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n585/Peldonman/20161014_110138.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/Peldonman/media/20161014_110138.jpg.html)
-
I've been messing around with these today. It took me a while to get the right diameter wire for the hook size and proper contrast with the colours but I'm happy now.
Size 18 Caddis Yellow:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-261116003301.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3884)

Just need to let it dry over night and coat with resin in the morning.
:z18
Liam
-
That's a bonny looking flech!
:z18
Steven
-
I reckon I could still get through the season with 30 flies but I still seam to carry thousands of flies in my boxes :z8
You need a blob in that box Euan - it looks naked :z4
-
My first batch fully finished. A couple of changes on my first few but I really happy with the outcome. What do you guys think?
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-031216220727.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3888)

They are seriously heavy for the size of them so could be very useful on some of our bigger grayling rivers.
:z18
-
Some say they look like sweeties..... lets hope the trout and grayling have a sweet tooth! :z16

Having a girlfriend in the beauty industry has it perks..... Not just on the looks front either :z4 :z7
Blasting my size 18s in this bad boy tonight.

Rock hard finish in no time. Just what's needed to withstand those early season teeth!
:z18
-
Pizza oven Liam?
-
Not quite Mike! :z4 :z7
She uses it for setting nail varnishes and uv coatings. It's effectively just a huge powerful uv torch.... Does the job nicely I must say.
:z18
-
Liam,
Out of curiosity is the clear uv nail varnish that beauticians use a viable alternative to bug bind etc?
Just thinking it may be a good way of avoiding "fly fishing tax"
Cheers
Steven
-
Steven :z16
I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. The girlfriend says it looks similar so give it a go. I would but she will kick my ass if she finds me using her things! :z4 :z7
Liam
-
It potentially opens up a far easier way of making those heavy bugs of yours if you can nab some of her coloured stuff.
Cheers,
Steven
-
Yeah you are probably right but I don't know if its worth it! :z7 :z4
On a serious not I will give it a try later and post some pics.
:z18
-
Steven :z16
I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. The girlfriend says it looks similar so give it a go. I would but she will kick my ass if she finds me wearing her things again! :z4 :z7
Liam
There you go Liam, fixed that for you as I know you're too shy to say so yourself :z4 :z4 :z4 :z4
-
Bloody autocorrect! Thanks Allan :z4
:z18
-
:z4 :z4 :z4 :z4
-
Well after 2 days of being Sociable i finally got some me time today. :z7
So i put it to good use, getting ready for 2017. :z16
SDO's, Iron Blues and 3 sizes of LDO's all based on 2016's observations and experiences.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-271216171642.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3924)
I got all the LDO's from the Same Gallo de Leon feather, so can comfortable state you will get at least 2 dozen flies from each feather (probably more) but a least 2 dozen.
Sandy :z18
-
Sublime work Sandy! :z16
Mike any update on the GDL feathers?
I won't tie a dry til I have some now that I've seen it.......
:z18
-
Hi Liam :z16
No update I'm afraid, I've just been too busy with the Christmas rush of orders and then Christmas itself with the family.
I'll let you know on here as soon as I have written the pages for the website.
Cheers
Mike
-
No worries Mike!
There's still around 70 days or so til the start of the season....... :z4 :z4
:z18
-
Today it has been Emergers :z12
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-281216185228.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3925)
We shall see what tomorrow brings :z16 Might be Star wars instead :z13
Sandy
-
Might be Star wars instead :z13
Go see Star Wars :z16
-
Lovely dries Sandy! :z16
Almost totally done with the nymphs now. Only a couple more rows of the Pheasant Tails to go. Just finished the last of these a few minutes ago.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-020117213807.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3931)
Anyone other than Sandy been tying?
:z18
-
Why 11's I find this very disturbing.... glad its not my box :X1 Prime numbers make things look unbalanced :z5
Star Wars was excellent :z12 way better than the last one.
I have just 4 more flies to tie to fill my box (I ran out of hooks :roll)
Sandy
-
I can't count! :X1 :X2
-
Hooks arrived, Box finished. Perfect antidote to the Young mans coloured rocks that he chucks at the fish :z12
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-060117110338.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3932)
7 basic patterns

Spent Spinner 14-16
APT 16-18
DHE/SHE 12-16
Vasies style Sedge 10-16
CDC Spider 14
A couple of colours, dark and light, in some patterns , one or two additions like egg sacs on spinners, and a selection of sizes and thats the culmination of the last 4 years of playing with hooks and patterns, these are the ones that work for me. :z16
Oh yes and just to keep the rock chuckers happy there is about a dozen Bead head PT's in a small plastic bag that will find its way into my Pack. Just in case..... :X2
Other than that.... Bring it on :z16
Sandy
-
Nice ...... very nice Sandy :z16

Sandy
-
Sandy,
I like the limited selection. What's the "APT"? I assume it is a type of pheasant tail nymph.
Cheers,
Bryan
-
Hi Bryan
The APT is the All Purpose Terrestrial by Paul Proctor.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-060117154734.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3933)

Sandy
-
You cheeky bugger Sandy! :z4 :z7
Rocks catch fish. You know it makes sense!
Bloody nice box of floaty things there. I hope to have something similar spread across a few slimline boxes.
:z18
Liam
-
Never mind Tactics Liam
looks more like Tic Tacs for Trout :X1
-
Well I like tic tacs and I bet the trout do as well! :z4
I'm still on the heavy stuff......
They say you find gold at the end of rainbows! :wink

:z18
-
That's both the nymph boxes now complete. I'm still debating whether or not to fill the bottom two rows.
My all time favourite and most productive nymph! In my opinion the only nymph you really need in your box.
140 (1) of the little beauties:

It's now well and truly dry fly time. I see the feathers are now live as well Mike, ace! Order on its way once I've figured out what ones I need.
:z18
-
Nice Liam :z16
I've just finished writing up the Gallos de Leon page ..... and you asked me to let you know when I'd got it done :wink
http://www.flylineshop.com/gallos-de-leon-feathers.html (http://www.flylineshop.com/gallos-de-leon-feathers.html)

Mike
-
Thanks Mike! :z16
So I see and I've just read through it all. I never realised there were so many different types, some interesting reading as well.
I know which two I need, one for the tails on my Duns and one for the Spinner. Order on its way to you.
:z18
-
Sandy do I spy some orangey D.H.Es in that box of yours? :shock
:z18
-
Nope, not really, they are Scruffy Buzzer coloured.
Don't suppose you remember this picture? i remember the day very well indeed :z12
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-090117172101.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3938)
-
Shit I do remember that fly! I'll do a few once I get up to speed again. Here's my first couple of dries this year.

I'll play around with a few more tonight to get my eye back in!
:z18

Don't forget the Squirmies and Mops for you and Sandy Liam :z4 :z4
-
Already on it Allan!! :z16
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-130117135548.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3945)
Sandy, just a dozen of each for you? :X2
:z18
-
Brilliant :z4 :z4 :z4
-
Liam and Sandy - your boxes are WAAAAAY too neat and tidy. curse you for making me feel guilty... but good on ya for reminding us that the season isn't so far away
I literally threw my fly tying tray and vice and materials into a cardboard box in november, in a frantic clear up the day before a new wooden floor got put down. Had a quick rummage in the box for superglue last week. Caused chaos. Hooks and feathers everywhere... still, I've got until March to get my stuff together.
-
Iain :z16
You better pull your finger out there's only 56 days to go! :z4
I can't wait!!!
:z18
-
You better pull your finger out there's only 56 days to go! :z4
56 minutes to go is when I'm likely to remove finger and get tying over my 3rd coffee of the opening day morning.
-
Yes Ian watch what you are doing with the super glue :shock , easgach 1
-
Iain I'd be shaking with excitement that morning. My flies wouldn't be up to much! :z4 :z7
:z18
-
Relax and take it leisurely, wander down the banks and wait for the olives to appear around lunchtime.......... :wink :z16
-
I'll leave that to the older chaps Allan!! :z4 :wink
Still messing about with nymphs for some reason...... :X1
Sawyers Killer Bug:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-250117174207.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3960)
Dries are proving to be a struggle so far. Hopefully I find the motivation before march!
:z18
-
nice bug Liam
So, my fly box looked like this at the end of last season
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/11431-260117080017.jpeg)
and, ready for the start of 2017, it looks like this:
aye, just as messy. While young guns wander the banks searching with pink bugs, i'll be trying to find the right flee in all that chaos i call my fly box :-)
-
Iain do you belong to the 'Dry or Die' group? :z4 :z7
I see a couple of my favourites among the chaos! :z16
-
Just ordered one of these for the car....... :X2
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-260117120134.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3962)
:z18

Here's an idea I've been toying with for a while now. It's probably been done before, so I'm not claiming fame to it.
The only downside to the PTN is durability. Whist it's not enough of a con to stop me using them I've often wondered how to change this. I've seen lots of videos and post of perdigon nymphs recently and of course I love my ceramics. This got me thinking why not add a coat of resin to a finished fly.......?
Here's the result:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-260117131759.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3963)
When wet:

I really like the look. The segmentation is enhanced, it still looks buggy and it's pretty much trout proof. I could change the tails to something more durable as well but I like the PT fibres.
What do you guys think?

I think you should get a sticker with proper punctuation. :X2

Yanks..... what do you expect!? :z4 :X2
:z18
-
that's a great wee ptn you've made there Liam - old and modern in one. Looks like it'll sink like a stone too
-
Thanks Iain! :z16
I think the UV coating will defo enhance its sinking properties. Hard to test this theory in a glass of water though. :z4
Liam
-
They look really good Liam but I can't help but think that you are loosing a lot of the "buggyness" of the pt fibres.
Will throw some together myself soon and have a play.
Cheers,
Steven.

I agree Stephen, others have said the same. Luckily I've 168 of the buggy looking ones plus a box of spares! :z16
:z18
-
A couple of nymphs patterns that make up my spares box. Nothing new or fancy just some tweaks on old reliable patterns! :z16

With my 3 nymph patterns I'm confident I'll catch all season!
:z18

Surprised that you're tying on barbed hooks Liam? ..... Nymphs look great :z16
Cheers

Thanks Mike! :z16
Lots of people are surprised but I haven't been able to find a barbless hook that I like the look of and have confidence in.

Is that for pulling the hook out the fishes mouth Sandy!? :z8 :X1
In all seriousness they will be crimped before use.

hi liam,
I like the Dohiku hooks, though admittedly only used the 301 model in sizes 16-20 for dries.
Have you had a look at their range at all? Maybe their 644 or 645 would interest you for bugs:
http://dohiku.eu/219-dohiku-hdg-645-larva-pupa-shrimp (http://dohiku.eu/219-dohiku-hdg-645-larva-pupa-shrimp)
-
Hi Iain
I'm familiar with the Dohiku range as I bought pretty much every model in 2014.
They were not bad but I found them to be one size bigger than stated. The 301 seemed long in the shank from size 16 and above. The 644 looked good as well but the gape with a bead on was tiny. I must admit I haven't tried the 645 yet and might do in the future.
I've tried pretty much every barbless hook on the market and have found nothing I like with the exception of the FM 35050.
:z18
-
hi liam - aye, they are big-sized small flies. The shank length always seems a bit long on the 16s, but the 18s and 20s look just right for wee dry flees. They were my two go-to hooks for almost all of last season on the Don (when we felt that fish were generally feeding on smaller things!)
cheers

There's some discussion on the course angling scene (who are always ahead of us game anglers) that barbless hooks cause more damage due to the amount of additional movement. To be honest i've never really been overly sensitive to the barbless only regime let's face it what effect does a micro barb have really? We should be more worried about poor handling of the fish after hooking (and i don't jut mean after landing either, an over-extended 'fight' can be seriously dangerous to the fish).
Having said all that, and been present with scientist guys for scale sampling, electro tagging and electro fishing, even simply watching fish in their general annual spawning regime i've witnessed the fact they can stand up to quite a bit of 'punishment' with no serious after effects. Be careful of the 'moral' stance as well, 100% C&R does not give you the 'High Ground' selective retention of fish does, that way you are 'harvesting' and being very selective on a food source, not merely using another living animal for self gratification. But all wild troots over two pounds should be carefully returned :wink
-
One of my main reasons for using barbless flies is that they are so much easier to remove from my own skin Allan :z4
Cheers

Nothing moral in my thoughts on this Allan, simply eleven years experience of running a fishery. Folk frequently hooked each other when fishing from boats, in the face, ears, neck and head ..... and themselves in hands and fingers. I was frequently asked to help to remove barbed and de-barbed hooks from folk and in the end wouldn't do it - it was inevitably my fault when it hurt :z6
Barbless hooks did make a very big difference in how long it took to release a fish, how much that fish was handled and greatly reduced mouth wounds in my experience too. But perhaps the worst culprit for mouth wounds was aggressive striking with rods in the heavier line weights.
Cheers

Interesting post Allan! I'm sure many will be shouting at their phone/monitor. :z4 :z7

I wish the rapala hook that a fish impaled me with whilst still on had been barbless..... :cry
I can still feel it now and it still makes me queasy just thinking about it. Sore isn't it Ash!? :z4
Most of my barbed hooks have now been debarbed.

like what compared to a barbed hook, they come out and go back in ?... :X1
both types of hooks have the same potential to swivel around as a fish changes direction. the barb has to, and does, create more tears and damage as the hook is swiveling. it's blaringly obvious.
-
Sorry if my comment has kind of hi-jacked your great topic Liam :oops ...... but it's all interesting discussion.

No worries Mike! :z16
Discussion is good, this is the place to do it.

The 'spares' nymph box. A couple of PT variants that I have huge success with and a hares ear type buggy thing.

A new 'Duo Dry/Float/Indicator/Suspenser/Bobber (that should keep everyone happy) to try this season a long with a few big Klinks. :z4
I saw the fly on Stan from Ceramic Flies FB page and liked the look of it. They float forever and revive super quickly.

After working in a hatchery for a few years it is amazing just how much handling small fish will take, and the bigger ones at stripping time, I tried barbless hooks ( Moser) and I didn't like them I have a few G Bucknall Micro barb hooks left, I bought quite a lot of them at a Market outside Stirling, these have been very good and easy to release,I can handle and release with out much stress to the fish, so I will keep to my hooks, :z12 easgach 1

Made a start to the small 'black stuff' box. Started really simple and I'm slowly remembering how ho tie things without tungsten and lead! :z4

finally got tidied up and ready for the new season. Bought myself one of the fly-tidy trays; they now do a mini one, only 9⅞" x 7⅞
(https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/11431-090317171551.jpeg)
I don't have luxury of a permanent space for a fly tying station; I wanted something I could pack away, but that was super quick to set up. Also wanted something that I could take on fishing trips. This setup cracks it. In the photo, and on/around the tray is 95% of the fly tying kit I use for my river flies: - vice & magnifying glass (just out of shot)
- scissors; grey benecchi thread in a bobbin;
- two more bobbins with thread, pearl lurex;
- varnish and a couple of needles.
- Box or two of hooks.
- a box of CDC feathers which fits onto the tray, and a mini box of dubbing.
The whole lot, including the white sight board, packs away into a plastic crate (against which I lean the sight board).
The mini tray is totally stable, and grand for collecting waste.
even tidied up the flee box; that won't last long
