Conditions were spot on.

But i only saw 4 olives all day  :cry

I did catch one though

Can't say the same for any fish, my mate got a couple on the salmon gear, but they were not looking up today, although there didn't seem to be much for them to see.

Great to be back out on the river though :z16

Not so good on the fish front then...... I may resort to the nymphs!

I was going to fish that beat as well tomorrow, so I best have a rethink again  :X1

Went for a nice walkabout on the river today, saw a few olives ..... but not enough to interest the trout apparently :z4

Had two, maybe three casts to make sure that I remembered how to do it. Conditions seemed good, but we didn't see a fish all day.

It was great to be back on the riverbank :z16

There's always next time though!

Yup we saw twice as many flies today, about 8 :z4 :z4 at this rate, a week next friday might be good :z16
The fish might have discovered they can look up :z7

well, saw some MBs on the water. 6 or 7 in total, and a few LDOs. A brief moment when we thought it might kick off... but no. Between two of us, we reckon we saw 5 rises all day. Twas cold and gloomy and Haar-dampened kinda day. Soon, though, soon...

Similar story across the board. I was out on opening day, very quiet, saw a total of 4 MBs. Nice to be back on the river though :z16

My best of the day...

Roll on Tuesday and some nice weather!

It's a Sea Trout Kelt according to reliable sources! Not what I was after but at this time of year it's just nice to get a good bend in the rod. It fought well!  :z16

Brownies tomorrow hopefully!

Didn't happen where I was on Saturday and big shifts of gravel which isn't good for invertebrates.
Saw about four risers with only one a steady one, sadly on the other bank so put the angler over that side onto it.

Going to leave it a couple of weeks and hope the forecast settled weather helps bring the flies and fish on.

Had another crack at it today.

Again conditions were spot on, although it was 3-4 degrees warmer than last week.

3 Hatches today, one about 11:30, one about 1:30 and another flurry about 2:15.
Each one had March browns and Olives , mostly march browns and at last there were some fish looking for them.

Saw quite a few nice fish moving.

The first hatch brought me this one, just shy of the 2lb mark, once i changed the DHE from a 14 to a 12 and went a bit bigger to match the hatch.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-220316171304.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3418)

During the main hatch at 1:30 there were a few good fish showing, my next couple both made the pound mark, i missed a couple of much bigger ones and then i latched onto this fella, he led me a dance up and down the river, but eventually i got him in and netted my first TF for 2016, pulled the net down to 3 1/4 but i think come May he could be pushing 4.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-220316171524.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3419)

The last flurry saw me miss a couple more, but who cares :z3

Great day to be out and i learned a few new things, although i also decided i really do just like fishing dryfly :z12

If this weather stay stable for a few more days, i think the river will just keep getting better, plenty flies today during the hatch, i found this small marina of tiny Brown Yachts in between hatches.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-220316171742.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3420)

Good luck if you venture out and keep the flies on the bigger side :z8

nice fishes sandy. I was out the same day.

A brief lift in temperature, a 5 min window of sunshine, a couple of fish bulging, presumably to ascending nymphs, then a very short-lived 5-10min window of olives afloat and trout on the feed up top.  Didn't last long. It was enough to get me off the mark for 2016 with a fine, fat 2.5lber which led me a dance around in the fast water for a while.

Later followed by a slimmer but bonny 2.25lber, and a couple of wee guys.

Action all over by 2.30 more or less when the cloud dropped and it got cold! Next few days look very wet, windy and cold. not ideal!

this was the 2.25lber before its safe return

I know its short notice, but i have a spare trout ticket for Upper Netherdale for tomorrow.
Anyone fancy joining me, its a tricky beat to get onto and i have the right rotation to be in what should be the right place when the flies start to come off.
Anyone interested, please PM me and i'll get back to you, provided its not too late tonight.
if not i shall just have to go catch the fish on me own :z3

I would of taken you up on the offer had I been available... nice beat :z16

I had a cheeky day off work today, conditions were not ideal with fresh winds and showers. Around 12:45 there was a flurry of LDOs and MBs with a few trout looking up, soon after I managed  a 2lber and dropped another. All went quiet for the next couple of hours. At 2:45 the sun peaked through the clouds. I moved to another pool where I spotted a solitary trout feeding at the tail in knee deep water, sipping olives. After a couple of cast he grabbed my dry and bolted off into the pool below, after a good tussle I managed to steer him to the net :z16

Well chuffed to get a hold of a trophy this early in the season. Still very lean but almost hitting the 5lb mark in the weigh net  :z18

Lovely day for it today, although the wind changed direction and started to increase after lunch, it still stayed warm enough for a few sporadic hatches of March browns and Olives, most MB's

It was location specific this afternoon, with two spots seeming to have the action, along the beat, mostly smallish stuff for me, 9-11"

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-250316172839.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3426)

Plenty of them though, so it gave me a chance to play with my new toy, impressed so far with the resolution, once i figure out how to use it properly it should get better still :z16

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-250316173021.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3427)

I did see a couple of big noses poking around the flies though, but they turned out to be Sea-trout Kelts, good sized though and a welcome bend in the rod

New beat for me today.
Started the day battling a Bar of Silver around the 12lb mark who took a liking to my olive quill jig, he eventually came off. After 12 it was dry fly time and I had a few 1-2lbers and a seatrout kelt. Finished the day on a high with an acrobatic 3lber.
Pretty good day considering conditions :z18

Great stuff guys  :z16

Managed a brief afternoon yesterday after dashing back up the road from Edinburgh.
Pleased to say olives were hatching and troots looking up (although would have expected more).  Anyway nailed plenty of them (every fish covered to be honest, most landed, couple lost couple missed).  No trophies (never saw one) and best a modest 14oz, but a start and plenty more to follow hopefully.

Nymph rod stayed in the car (where I belongs) and size 12 olive DHE the killer (proper fishing).  :wink

Managed to get a free pass on Saturday and figured I'd make the trek up the Deveron to see what all the fuss was about.

Had a thumping take early doors on a streamer that unfortunately came to nothing.

There was a small and brief hatch of olives around 2pm that saw a few troots looking up but nothing of any real notable size.

I did however manage to land 4 almost identical in proportions from one run which made the trip worth it.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/950-290316194326.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3429)

Was great to get a day out chasing river  browns again and I sincerely hope I can get back up there towards the end of April/May as it definitely still feels a tad too early yet for me.

Cheers,

Steven.

Starting to fish now although fish are reluctant to take March Browns for some reason (saw the same last year as well).

Good couple of hours yesterday with a dozen to about 1 1/2 lb, and half dozen late Saturday afternoon to 2lb 12oz.  All on DHE.

Nice wee trip out today

When you got out of the wind there were some rising fish, picking off LDO's as they hatched. Late on though after 1.30pm

Perhaps LDO's are not as Olive as one might expect at the moment of hatching, this one was struggling out as i fished it out, I had hoped to get the photo with the shuck, but it shed it just as i lifted the fly.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-040416190322.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3450)

Had the Cane rod out for its first outing of the season, once i relaxed into its rhythm we had good fun, i had  a few this kind of size 14-15"

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-040416190509.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3451)

Best of the day was another 19"er which was awesome fun on the Cane rod

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-040416190619.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3452)

Fish were hard to spot again, some of the rises were nothing more than dimples and those dimples were anything from 10" to 19". DIdn't see any March Browns today, just a reasonable number of olives hatching in small batches every 10-15 mins from 1.30 right through to 4pm.
Not sure what tomorrow will bring, i have everything crossed it doesn't rain too much in the Deveron catchment tonight.

The Deveron didn't produce much for me today. I know it did for some though!  :wink

After a morning spent walking and watching and not seeing very much I decided on a change of tactics. Back to the car and the 4wt Sage was swapped for the 3wt Epic. It was a day to explore the feeder stream which was running a lot clearer.

I had great fun during the afternoon  and there was a fantastic hatch of Olives around 3.30pm. The surface was honestly covered with them in places.

I lost count of the amount of 6-10" fish I caught.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-050416192141.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3453)

I stopped taking pictures after those first two as the action was thick and fast!

Working my way up stream I spotted an unmistakable big fish. It was rising in that big fish type of water and was just rolling over the olives as they came by. I got him 2nd attempt and he was a beauty! Around 17" and 2lb in weight.

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-050416192609.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3455)

I'm counting it as a small stream trophy! I think any fish over 12" in a small stream is a great fish. I've plans to explore it some more in the coming months.  :z16

As the young man attested too, it was a very strange day on the river.

when we arrived at 1015 the water was coloured although still with some visibility and about 8-10" higher than yesterday

(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-050416195305.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3458)

As the day progressed the water kept rising and getting dirtier, i reckon it rose about 4" while we were fishing, it seemed to be starting to drop as we went home at 5pm

(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050065.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050065.jpg.html)

So we had rising, colouring water but a light breeze and overcast so the challenge began :z7
After yesterdays trek covering about 6-7 miles to find some rising fish, today i think we covered nearer 10miles.
Up and down the beat and nothing to be seen.
Come lunchtime there was the odd fly coming off and walking back up the beat provided a couple of rising fish.
nothing exciting but the area was a nice flat, about knee deep and the fish were about 12" so we kept going back up the stretches we expected to find some fish. a long walk to find just one rising fish tight in to the near bank.
But there were more flies appearing, this was about 1.30
So back off downstream to the bit i saw the fish earlier, my oppo disappeared up the tributary as you can read above.
come 2.30 the flies were coming thick and fast

(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050043.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050043.jpg.html)

the fish were in small pods tight against the bank and it became a matter of creeping about and trying a few flies.
This was the sight that brought lots of encouragement on a very difficult day.

A change to a more delicate dry, started to bring some fish

(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050057.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050057.jpg.html)

Lots of fish! mostly all around 12" but great fun and plenty of them all shades but some were really pretty

(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050062.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050062.jpg.html)

Then they started to get a bit bigger.

(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050031.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050031.jpg.html)

every other fish was 16" and i weighed them at 2lb and were happy to rise even in the dirtier water
(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050052.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050052.jpg.html)

This was the biggest as it disappeared back to its watery home
(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh7/skuesapprentice/P4050059.jpg) (http://s252.photobucket.com/user/skuesapprentice/media/P4050059.jpg.html)

So courtesy of these little fellas providing the biggest hatch of the season

I had the best day of the season so far, even if it didn't show or provide any trophies. A day that looked to be lost turned out to be Fab but only in a very small section, but it seemed every fish in the river was there.

I couldn't resist the video, we must have covered 10-11 miles today looking for fish
and they were all like this, in small pods and almost all in a 100 yd stretch of the river.
Once i found them it was much creeping and crawling about, but they took that Plume Tip Dun very confidently :z16

Sandy,

as ever great pics and cracking report, another great day on the river. As  stated on my previous reply to Liam, jealous and cant wait to get home, just one small request, can you two leave some for the rest of us to chuck fluff at later in the season?

The Deveron didn't produce much for me today. I know it did for some though!  :wink

After a morning spent walking and watching and not seeing very much I decided on a change of tactics. Back to the car and the 4wt Sage was swapped for the 3wt Epic. It was a day to explore the feeder stream which was running a lot clearer.

I had great fun during the afternoon  and there was a fantastic hatch of Olives around 3.30pm. The surface was honestly covered with them in places.

I lost count of the amount of 6-10" fish I caught.

I'm counting it as a small stream trophy! I think any fish over 12" in a small stream is a great fish. I've plans to explore it some more in the coming months.  :z16

 :z18

Nice fishing Liam and nice troots although small stream trophy?  Not from that stream it's not  :wink :z4 :z4 :z16 Good to see they were still keen as well after i rattled them on Saturday evening .

Fantastic stuff Sandy, thought the river would be out of sorts after the rain but that proved me wrong.  Have noticed the olives are smaller that normal for this time of year and i've already switched from DHE to Dirty Duster with instant results.  Noticed also the lack of interest to MB's despite some good hatches.  And some notable changes to the river after the late winter floods.

We were discussing this on the Don on Saturday as well, the Olives definately seem to be smaller than usual, about a whole hook size? was wondering why that would be. The hatch between 2.30 and 3.30 was huge. :z16

Normal for the Deveron for the size to drop as you head through late April into May as the LDO and OU numbers drop and Small Dark's become the fish's focus (then BWO's)
But noticed this year LDO's and OU's most certainly smaller and yes a hook size is about right.  Was also thinking this might be why the fish are (for the most part) ignoring the MB's on the Deveron despite decent hatches.

Although we had a milder winter we did experience big floods on the Deveron just prior to the start of the season with some large movements of gravel which is never good for invertebrates, but I'd have simply expected a bit of a delay in the hatches (which there has been) and not such a drop in the larger olive species (certainly in size).  No idea as to why, but I can confirm size 14's the way to go just now.  :z16

A good few fish this afternoon, lots 10-12" best was 15", nothing huge but a lot of fun. Upstream wind on one side of the beat and a downstream wind on the other made things interesting. Water is clearing nicely and still dropping :z16

Anyway crackin report (and I think I know where you were  :wink).  Good to know river clearing nicely, was manky on Monday.
Bit of rain forecast for today apparently didn't come to much so if it stays good then might be interesting this weekend.  :z16

Bright sunshine and warmth today, made for a lovely day to be by the river :z16

Sporadic hatches all afternoon, brought some fish up, where they could pose for photo's and let the sun catch them nicely

Jurassic flies abound, some were very interested in another dinosaurs equipment

Unfortunately the trout didn't quite make jurassic proportions, but they did provide a lot of fun on the glass rod.

Back on the big water today with a last minute flexi day off work.  Plenty Small Darks, a sprinkling of Yellow Mays and a few Black Gnats and plenty rising troots.  Landed over 25 with a good few nudging over the pound, no Rod Benders on show apart from one Silver Tourist that showed face a few times.

Rain forecast so might bring the bigger fish back on, roll on the weekend  :z16

Had a good session on Sunday on a slightly colouring and rising river with over 25 fish all on dries (although three were caught with flies pulled across the pool sub-surface).
Best couple of browns in the 2 plus range, plenty more pound plus and a cracking 3lb 1oz fresh Sea Troot on a Black Klink during a fall of Black Gnats (which it was picking off as they passed).

All in all a cracking weekend, Hibs with a Silver Trophy on Saturday, and me with one on Sunday.

Great way to 'christen' a new line with my GT90 arriving Friday (thanks again for yet more brilliant service Mr Barrio).

Roll on next outing.

Way up country today and the fishing was superb.  Sun splitting the sky didn't matter as the wee flush of fresh water on Friday meant everything was switched on.
Not a great hatch but trickles of fly coming through enough to get fish looking up and interested, in fact very interested.

Caught around 30 with the best a cracking 2lb 5oz, plenty in the pound range as well and some in some challenging very skinny water.

Great day  :z16
