Title: Fishing Wagon
Post by: Mike Barrio on 07/12/2015 at 11:36
I've got a real yearning for a classic Toyota campervan as a fishing wagon ..... it just won't go away :oops

It would have to double up as my daily transport though, so it's not an easy decision :z8

I can't stop thinking about swapping my truck out for a Mitsubishi Delica.

Perfect compromise for me. Essentially a pajero with a small camper body. Ticks so many boxes.

Only issue would be my always minging dogs having to be in the cabin. It's the only thing stopping me at the minute.

Nice vans, I was eyeing these 4X4 up Steven, but I would still prefer a  standard Toyota.

Here is my fishing wagon. All I have to do over the next three years is upgrade the power from the engine add power steering and put a howling wolf roof tent on and she will be ready for many years of fishing all over Scotland.

Mike,

If you do get a 4x4 don't let your mates play offroad in it whilst you are away. The result can be rather expensive...

Cass and myself looked at a Delica Spacewagon a few years ago for fishing/camping. It was amazing inside and we were very very tempted.....that was until I went to get tires for my Landy 90 offroader and came back with a Landy 110 County Station Wagon!

One of the lads here runs a camper van as his daily transport but he pointed out that he cannot get into many of the car parks due to height restrictions, even some "tourist" carparks when he is out touring. He basically lives at the ski slopes in it during the season.

Good luck with your purchase...very jealous!!

Proper offroading and great lockable diff for those wet grass slopes back to the main road. Even managed to fit Hamish (just!) in the car too  :z7

Euan,

I've always had a soft spot for the orignal 4x4 pandas. It was unbelievable where those things could go with their minimal gorund clearance.

I've always been a firm believer in lightweight low powered offroader's (Sj's etc) over the massive chelsea tractors that litter our roads these days.

If it wasn't for the fact I have two large dogs that never fail to get clarted in dubs wherever I go, I would swap back from my truck in a heartbeat.  The convenience of being able to pressure wash the back of it or is more prone in my case just leave the tub minging without the interior getting ruined is  the biggest appeal.

Steven,
Two wee terriers in the back seat with an Orvis seat cover still leaves loads of room for tackle in the boot. Rods go behind the front seats no bother.
The new automatic FWD system seems to work really well, especially on wet roundabouts (lovely four wheel drifts).
Couldn't be happier with the Panda.

My youngest is fast approaching 17, so she is looking at cars. To be fair to her, she has a bit of a passion for older cars, so that makes me happy...

...however, onto the story...Cass and myself have talked about buying a car that the three of us can use, and that my youngest can learn to drive in.

We have narrowed it down to an old SJ or a Jimny.  Cheap parts, square so easy to park, dents and dings look good on them and so on make it a perfect beginners car, but I have not told her yet that I shall be using it in the winder to get to some of the harder to reach Grayling and Pike spots and she is going to have to take the bus! ;)

Also not told her the 0-60 time is around 14 seconds so no disking about showing off in front of boys (for her...not me!!).

Quite looking forward to driving an SJ again (if we can find one).

Yep...seen and noted, but a bit of a wreck inside.

My mate who had the offroad place at Inverbervie, Nortrack,  had SJ's as vehicles people could hire and go round the track in.  It was not unusual for them to end up on their sides and have us lot push them back upright.

They were pretty much bomb proof and did indeed go pretty much anywhere (deep wading excepted). Very similar engineering to a Series landrover and often said to be a copy.

The only thing they did not do well is role. Absolutely no strength to the roof and I remember out in Brunei seeing a couple of very flat ones at the side of the road.

All the Suzis can be a bit tail happy on wet or greasy roads as my missus found out when she spun on the Cairn and killed her Vitara.
Great off road but not so much on tarmac. (She does have a history of spinning Suzukis though!! :z4 :z4 :z4)
Depending on budget Arnold Clark are doing very good deals on new 4x4 Pandas and if PCP floats your boat then it doesn't cost that much over an older car / car loan.

Cass looked at the Panda and the 500 X 4x4.

Trouble was price. £26k for a fiat!! Ouch!

Since the Jeep Renegade is really a Panda/500x in different clothes, I would probably buy one of those instead because they have a £5k off deal plus an additional £2k off. Comes in at £19k for the mid range 4x4 version.

Not that I would want to drive a Fiep or is it a Jeat? lol

The Renault 4 ( Cuatro Latas ) was good fun to drive, the wrist action of the mid dash board gear stick took a bit of getting used to.
A bit like the Citroen 2CV ..... they would go anywhere and were 'interesting' when cornering :z4
Title: Re: Fishing Wagon
Post by: Terry Coging on 23/09/2017 at 10:01
Yes, the Renault 4! I had one and it was quite amazing what it could do for a two wheel drive.  Snow, deep mud, rocks, narrow gaps.... It was quite roomy for the dog and tackle too. Unfortunately the floor rotted very badly and it was plated/welded many times. I used to joke that the cornering ability was helped due to all the floor plating helping lower the centre of gravity.  :z4
I currently run an old XTrail for fishing. Cheap as chips and quite capable.

If you don't really need a 4x4  the Citroen Berlingo and Pergy Partner are worth considering. Stacks of room and better ground clearance than a normal car - but most importantly - for me anyway, is the large rear door that lifts giving plenty of shelter and a low floor for sitting comfortably. I had a Disco3 and hated the boot arrangement.
Title: Re: Fishing Wagon

I recently sold my late Father in Laws Peugeot Partner.
A fantastic fishing car it would have made if we'd kept it but it brought back too many memories for she who must be obeyed so I sold it off  :z10

I found the ground clearance a little wanting to be honest, but it is nevertheless substantially better on the rough stuff than your average family car.

I know where there was a Renault 4 sitting..... must go see if it's still there, it had an Alfa 33 Sportwagon 4x4 for company.....

Catastrophe! My X Trail fishing wagon needs a new fuel pump. Unfortunately I am at the cottage here in Brittany and due to return home tomorrow. The local diesel specialist want 1716 Euro to replace the pump - that is just about as much as the car is worth!
May leave it here as a 'gate guardian' and replace it with something newer? So what will my next fishing wagon be?  Maybe another X Trail because I like them and and the current car has a set of new AT's fitted - which will be useful. I need a 4x4 for this place, 5 acres on a slope in the boondocks. Might even consider another pick up truck - useful for my other hobby of cidre making and restoration of associated equipment.

Hmmm seems a smidgen expensive to me. I'd have though you should be able to pick up a reconditioned unit in the UK for about £500 depending on engine spec. Fitting :? Well shouldn't cost too much....
But is it really shot :?
Not that long ago I spotted an X trail at a garage and because we were thinking about an X trail I was inquisitive as the fuel system had been stripped out. The mechanic said the fuel pressure regulator was a regular culprit on Nissan diesels and that it was possible to change that and a couple of valves on the pump - so couple hundred quid and not thousands.
He said that most folk (folk=fitters) would just bolt on a new part rather than try and fix what's already there.

Thanks for that Hamish - pretty much what I was thinking. Unfortunately the truck is in France. I have several contacts locally in the UK that could do as you say but no options in France.  The 262 mile trip + ferry back home would cost a bomb and at 79 my days of going underneath and fixing cars are over.  Looking at an other X-Trail at the mo.

Bought another old X Trail. Petrol this time  :wink  Hardly a scratch or dent on it - a couple of fishing trips will soon put that right  :X2

Something missing from my fishing wagon. It's got an Orvis and a 'Flymasters of Indianapolis' sticker on the back but I've never bought anything from Orvis and only a pair of trousers from Flymasters. I have however, bought several Barrio fly lines and introduced them to several mates............ :X2

Mike,

I'd be interested in buying two from you also (one for each side of the truck canopy) I'd completely forgotten that I was supposed to nip in past ages ago .

A last minute change of plans had me sending a mate up to Aberlour to pick her up this morning.

A few cosmetic bits to tidy up namely lacquer peel on the bonnet and a small patch of rust above the windscreen  but other than that it appears clean and straight for it's age  :z16

Plenty of plans already but decent tyres and a DIY camper fit out inside are the priority.

Great stuff Steven ....... nice wagon :z12

Is it auto or manual, the manual ones can be harder to find?

Cheers

 Mike,

It's an Auto. You are right the manuals appear to be like hen's teeth. Luckily for me I have always preferred Auto's for off-roading anyway.

It comes with some seriously quirky features  :z16 The electrically operated blinds for the Crystalite Roof are cool and the fold out footrests for the middle row captains chairs are funky but i'm gutted that it didn't come with the factory option Karaoke Machine (I am not kidding  :z4)the Japanese are a strange bunch at times.

 :z4 so did I.

Until we realised the sliding door was a different colour on the inside and the front wing had been changed (looked like accident damage) and the roof lining was missing.

Oh and this one was £500 cheaper.

The stickers may well be added tho

That would be 500 reasons to get this one.
And 500 more for Punisher stickers and weapons upgrade  :wink
