Hi guys :z16
I thought it would be nice to have a place to share and discuss flies and or anything fly tying in preparation for next year. I know it's a long way away but it's good to be prepared! :X2
I hope a few of you join in posting over the close season.
:z18

Heres a handful of whispy Bloas to get things started. Tied on size 12 B160s, a good hook for a great fly!

:z18

Another staple in my box all season in 14-16s. It's a 3 material fly and takes 2 minutes to tie! :z16
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-131015194917.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3128)
:z18

I like the look of those Liam :z16
-
I'll stick to my invictas and claret bumbles, and the Blae and black, easgach 1
-
Nice looking flees Liam.
Yup Derek classics and still very deadly
-
Nice flies for a step by step Liam :wink
Cheers

Failure turned to success tonight. A slightly long wing on a F-Fly pissed me off and as a result I roughed the fly up. The wing cocked and the body became even buggier. I liked what I was seeing!
The result:

I'm going to tie some in 12-14 for the early season MB.
:z18
-
My most productive nymph of last year. Mainly because I fished them 90% of the time.
The Frenchie:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-271115150612.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3204)
I'll be tying a shitload for sure! :z16
:z18
-
Good lookin flee Liam, although I always thought the Frenchie was black n red whilst your yins are more PTN types?? :z8
Apologies if I'm wrong though, wouldn't be the first time :z4
-
Just ordered a heap of stuff from Lucian ...... time to dust the cobwebs off the vice
How's that SBS going Liam? :z13
Cheers

I know the fly you mean Allan, black body, silver rib, red holo tag and peacock glister thorax. I think it's called the French Nymph.... The one I've tied is big amount at the American comp guys. But you are right mine are just a fancy PTN :z16
Anyone got any flies coming off their vice?

Post some pics of your creations Mike!
Sadly I've not had the time yet I'm afraid.

here's the Frenchie.

Thanks for that Marc! I leave out the Fluoro thread collar on most of mine. Thats the video I follow though :z16
Liam
-
Stand corrected :z4 Like that yin Liam, sense a few of these coming soon :wink
Plenty flees coming off my vice as well so a few pics on their way including one or two improved tyings on a couple of familiar flees :z16
-
I feel a tad embarrassed to post this on a page with proper fleas but i've been steadily tying some Stockie bashing fleas for the winter. I don't normally bother tying, preferring to raid my dad's boxes when the opportunity arises but there are some flies that he just point blank refuses to tie :z7

Stevie,
you are right a man needs to have some standards, However behind the vice with the tube fly for March the eagle eyed among you will spot some horrible lure thingys amongst the wets for next summer. Roll on March and some spring fishing when I am home on holiday.
Eddie. :z18 :z18

OOPS,
missed out a photo.

Stevie,
just in case you thought that I had gone to the dark side by making a couple of lures for you, here are the new wet flies for 2016.

Eddie (dad) :X2
Pfft I'd argue that some of those wets are merely "gentlemans" lures anyway.
P.s Many thanks for tying them for me though. Would be a shame for such bonnie fleas to not result in decent fish...
Cheers
Steven
-
After tying 170 lures I started to get rather bored looking at them so i've started to play around with some buzzery type patterns.
As Dad pointed out the thorax's on the Seals Fur efforts are quite large but the plan there is to use them ginked up as suspenders. It's been a while since I tied anything this small so please excuse the roughness of them. For the past 4 years i've only been tying for Snakehead and Peacock Bass.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/950-071215234005.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3216)
:z18
Steven.
-
Some small-ish ones :z16
My top buzzer pattern for the rainbows. Simple little brassie style flies.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-231215105445.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3246)
A little baetis nymph for the rivers. Modelled on Dave Wiltshires thread nymph. Again super simple but will no doubt produce!
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-231215105655.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&imd=3247)
:z18
Liam
-
Liam, that last wee nymph, but with a body of UTC olive wire :wink
-
Nice idea Allan and one that I have thought about. Only thing I don't like is the matte finish of the wire :z8
:z18
-
Finish it with Bug Bond or some other glossy UV varnish then :wink
-
it gets wet and becomes shiny when fished anyway, no ? :roll
-
I have no room for anymore nymphs now! :X1
This cool little box from C&F which weighs just 26g will be used as my 2016 Duo/Nymph house. The capacity is perfect and has allowed me to fit 2 small boxes worth into the one. That's the planning done and the hooks in place (needed to work out OCD spacing and size order).
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-281215220426.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3248)
In time it will be filled mainly with PTNs, Frenchies and Hares Ears although a couple of others might find their way in. Those that fish the Duo, what are you using for your indicator/suspender (dry) fly?? Klinks are pissing me off!
:z18
-
Toys ....... :z12

Mike :z16
How do you find Lucians CDC compared to others you have used? I'm looking for some new and hopefully fuller feathers.
:z18
Liam
-
Hi Liam,
I got some CDC oiler puffs from Lucian, so can't really compare with standard feathers.
Cheers
Mike
-
My mistake Mike :oops I should have looked closer! Are you using the puffs for dries out of interest? :z16
:z18
-
I used to use them for dries many years ago Liam, they worked really well for me then ..... and I fancy giving it another try
Cheers
Mike
-
Nice idea, I'll have a go at that tonight Mike! :z16
Here's a special little fly that gets a wee box to itself. I was shown it last year by an old regular on here. Really simple and very bloody effective! I tie them in 14-16 and vary bead size and colour.
The Olive Quill Jig:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-301215155058.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3252)
:z18
Liam

Liam
I got some of Lucians Top grade CDC for tying this winter, top quality stuff :z16 well impressed, you get a decent bag full as well.
Best quality CDC i ever bought was Bennechi Hyper select, the Troutline ultra select is as good and much better value as you get more feathers in the bag.
I'm quite happy with the Top Grade for most of my stuff, but the Ultra Select is super, especially for spun hackles :z16
Sandy

Here's one of Mikes boxes filling up with in my eyes the best nymph of all. The Pheasant Tail Nymph (and variants).
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-070116173520.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3260)
Hopefully the trout approve!
:z18
-
Fly tying!? I think these flies sit right on the edge of that, fly making is more like it!
With thoughts on Grayling and swollen rivers I've been playing around and stumbled upon this :X2
Purists look away now!!
The threadless Squirmy (a hook, bead and rubber material is all that's used)!
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-080116111403.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3262)
A handful more in pink and I'll be set. Oh and the brownies enjoyed them last season :z4
Liam
-
What Brownies ...... they're all Sea Trout now :z4
-
Oh I'm sure the Sea trout will like them. I may even try them early season, swung for the salmon :z7
-
Got a couple of boxes from the loon for Christmas, one for troot fleas and one for tubes.
After a few sessions at the vice they are now ready for my trip home in March.
Tight lines for 2016. :z18

-
A couple more for the new season. :z16
I stuck at the Klinks and it eventually came good. I'm pretty chuffed with these guys. They are big and heavily dressed but their job is to suspend tungsten in fast water.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-140116143714.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3278)
This one is for my experimental/spares box. My take on Lewis Hendries Black & Purple. He uses it for both trout and grayling and both seem to eat it.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-140116144004.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3279)
My boxes are starting to take shape now! :z12
Liam
-
Lookin good Liam :z16
-
Cheers Allan! I'll try them in March hopefully :z16
Onto the deadly dries now :wink
Liam
-
Liam,
I am liking your fleas, I am sure that you will do well with them in 2016.
I have just tied a bunch of Bachs and Hares lugs on heavy weight fourteens for Durness but don't have a box for them yet.
Eddie :z18

-
Thanks Eddie :z16
I'm sure yours will serve you well. Liking the bottom DB, nice and simple but no doubt deadly! :z12
Liam
-
This weekend I was tying Hogs and winged wet flies so that if and when I am at home at an appropriate time of the year I will be ready to maximize fishing time without having to tie flies for trips to lochs.
Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later, I miss the troot fishing.
Eddie. :z18

Nice work Eddie! :z16
Can't be long now before you wet a line over here.
:z1
-
This fly caught me my last Brownie of the 2015 season. A fish I will always remember- low water, spooky fish, fine tippets and a shitload of weeds!
The Plume Tip (variant) size 16:

Hopefully it will catch me my first of the 2016 season! :z16

This is one of 2 additions to my flybox for 2016, quite a revelation at the back end when the fish got very picky :z16
Brilliant little fly :z14
Sandy
-
What's the other one Sandy? :z16
Liam

The PFPC (Polyfitus/Peeping Caddis mix):
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-260116205029.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3302)
Nice and buggy and super heavy, a fish catching depth charge. :z16
Liam
-
A cluster of PTNs (Sorin style, he caught a lot of big fish on this pattern).
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-270116104636.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3304).
I doesn't get much easier either; a hook, bead, PT fibres, fine copper wire and rusty brown thread. :z16

Far too complex for me Allan. :z4 I bet I can tie 4 to your 1 using my cheat method :wink
You caught many fish on them??
Liam
-
My God a reply to one of my tutorials on the Fishing the Fly website, i'll finish this reply once I've picked myself off the floor and managed to use the smelling salts to clear my head.
I've much easier ways of tying this but wanted to show how I tie them when rapid decent to depth / fast water situations are required.
I also tie them like this because:
melting and shaping the ends helps make the 'fly' appear more 'natural', but in truth it sets up better if you're going to colour the tips as I do.
Colour the tips because it looks more like a brandling worm and the varnish helps protect the colour, but also has added advantage of making the ends slightly heavier and able to catch the current better (making the fly a lot more mobile in the water).
And yes I have caught on it in a big dirty water when everything else wasn't working which is about the only time I'd probably use this pattern (this and when competing).
As you know if it's no a Dirty Duster or DHE then it's nae use tae me :wink :z4
-
The spare/experimental nymph box is nearing completion! :z14
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-010216195857.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3320)
Just waiting on a few beads and stripped quills then I can dress the bare hooks. In this box I have a few big duo (indicator/suspender) dries, some small yank patterns (brassie and zebra midge), depth charge PFPC, hares ear variants, stripped quill nymphs, B&P jigs and a shit load of PTNs!
Sorted for the season I reckon.
:z18
Liam
-
That's the working Duo/Nymph box at maximum capacity! :z12
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-010216230226.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3321)
Big ass klinks, hares ears (light, dark and flashback), frenchies, pheasant tail nymphs, double tungstens and thread nymphs. Nice and simple but patterns I have massive confidence in!
:z18
Liam
-
With the 11th fast approaching I continued tying the salmon fly of choice.
Sandy's shrimpy spider:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-020216164423.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3322)
I hope you approve Sandy (the wing is slightly longer but i am hoping for more movement). A couple more colours to do then I'm set.
:z18
Liam
-
Liam,
With the amounts of flies you have tied recently, I have to ask, do you seriously go through that amount of flies in a season.
I still have flies you gave two seasons ago and some sandy did for me last year.
Am thinking now that this would be the norm for those that tie flees, as I am betting sandy will have a flee box brisling with an assortment of dry killers for this season.
love the last batch
-
Colin :z16
Fair point to make. I do go through a lot especially nymphing (rocks, trees, trolleys, burnt out motorbikes, traffic cones, barrels, fencing and rope were all left with a fly or two in them last season). Trout teeth take there toll eventually as well. My idea behind it is that I'm set for the whole season. I can afford to lose a lot and still have more. Meaning less time at the vice and more time on the river!
Most guys on here will be in full tying mode at the moment. I know a few guys who will have almost full boxes (Scott, Sandy, Mike, Allan....) come on give us a peak! :z7 :z4
Liam
-
Some more progress on one of my two dry fly boxes. This one is the early season box! :z16
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-030216131655.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3326)
Seems like a very long way off still :cry
Liam
-
Here's one for you Allan! :z16
The French Nymph(2.5&3ml):
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/2193-040216002145.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3328)
Nice and simple like all my flies.
:z18
-
Any chance of some step by steps?
I'm wanting to get some tying done before the start of the season (nymphs and simple dries) but not always sure where to start and what to tie.
I personally would appreciate some pointers on the simpler ones to tie (bonus if they catch fish).
-
Some more big Klinks as spares:

I'm just tying for the sake of tying now as my boxes are jam packed! :z4
Liam

Andy :z16
All the flies I tie are simple as I hate over complicated patterns! Have a look through the pages, pick a few and I'll get the SBS done for them. Plenty of time in my hands :X2
P.S for anyone interested I have tied way more than I need so have spares. If you would like some PM me :wink

You on commission Marc!? :wink :z7
Got three of those for my dry flies and my small stream box, they are filling up nicely! For my spares I use the FM slim line boxes as they are cheap and take up no room, only problem is my spare box is full now. Time to get another I think :X1 :X2
:z18

Liam,
I see you’ve been busy over the winter months, nice flies :z16
I’m starting to get the itch, looking forward to the new season. I best get cracking and tie some flies,... or I could always pinch a few of yours. You seem to have plenty to go around :z4 :z4 :z4
Cheers
Scott

Scott :z16
I'll swap you :wink

I need to get tying dries but can't get into it. Given that trout feed on subsurface food items 90% of the time, I figured these wouldn't hurt!
PTN (size 16 2.5ml bead).

DHE's size 12 in /olive and natural Hare's Lug :wink :wink

I need to stop this nymph addiction! :z7
Liam
-
Finally made a window for the appointment with my Vice :wink
So been busy since last night filling my box with nice new hooks ready for tomorrows first escapade.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-140316113001.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3400)
So its business as usual (although new hooks after last years issues with the 100's) with a nod to the one i discovered last year, which i played with this morning to get it to float in bigger sizes, so thank you Liam )for the pattern) Andrew Ellis (for the body material) and Davie Mcphail (he provided the answer to floating a size 12/14)
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/19-140316113136.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=3401)
So here's to tomorrow :z18 may 2016 bring you all a monster :z16
Cheers
Sandy
-
nices ! :z16 what's that hook Sandy and what's the floating in bigger sizes secret ? :z16
-
Tightlines tomorrow Sandy! :z16
I'll be out on Wednesday and it looks like the weather will be kind!
:z18
-
nices ! :z16 what's that hook Sandy and what's the floating in bigger sizes secret ? :z16
Cheers Bud
The hook is a Fulling Mill 35050, a mate sent me some to try out, it looks exactly the same as the Maruto DO4BL i got off Lucian.
Both are better than the last few batches of Partridge SLD's i've had. I was dissappointed with the thick points and poor hook ups, these new hooks have the nice Dk Nickel finish but have the sharpness and slimness of point like the TMC103BL, but without the solid black finish :z16
The floating was using more feathers :X1 and cutting the tags a bit longer to make a wing shape, Liam had already told me that but it wasn't until i wathced Davie's video that i understood how long they had to be
Liam, tight lines mate, i'm out wednesday as well :z12 been a long 5 1/2 months!
Sandy
-

It's not as hard as it seems. Take a handful of patterns you like using and get the materials for them. Learn the basics - dubbing, ribbing, tailing, whip finish etc. Practice, practice and practice some more and it will all come good.
Here's a few I'd recommend to start with:
F-Fly straight or curved, very straight forward to tie and uses only a few materials. It will work all season long and cover a multitude of hatches in different sizes and colours.
Pheasant Tail Nymph, my love for this nymph is apparent if you look back through this thread. Again it's very easy to tie and uses a few materials. Keep it thin and make sure it tapers. Play about with bead colour, thoraxs, hotspots and ribbing colour to give you endless variations. Size 12-16 will see you okay all year.
DHE, same as the other two. The hardest thing about this fly is positioning the wing and getting the proportions right. Save this fly until you are a little more confident.
I have spare materials and hooks, I'm sure others will have spare as well. If you would like a selection to get started let me know! :z16

Ha ha Liam, Your a preacher on a deaf ears (literally), "When I say I must get into it" I say in jest :X2 I am just not made of the Fly tying stuff your need patience, were I have none,.
Nope I don't even think a pack of naked lady fly ties could get me interesting tying.
But Your enthusiasm is commendable and your work is outstanding.
I get mine from my pal Ebay :X1

Inspired by an recent talk with a mate along with watching countless yank fly tying videos. I decided to give micro flies a go.
Nice and simple works best with hooks this small I think. I'm going to do a couple more patterns to make up a small micro fly box.
Size 20s:

They should do the trick!

Where's the pearly bits? :wink

No need to over complicate them Allan. I'm lazy and simple works for me :z4 :z7

Just mix Olive Glister through the thorax dubbing :wink :wink
-
After several fish in the nice to absolute belting bracket on the same fly, I have decided I only need a single nymph.
This one:

This means I have around 300 others (most are on previous pages of this thread) sitting doing nothing. If anyone is interested in buying them PM me.
