Title: CLA Gamefair Cancelled
Post by: Mike Barrio on 21/09/2015 at 16:43
Word on the street is that the CLA Game Fair has been cancelled and the organisers are also cancelling the 2016 event.

Sad news ..... but let's be honest, we could see it coming :z6

Looks like the Game Fair website has been replaced with a statement ....... http://www.gamefair.co.uk/ (http://www.gamefair.co.uk/)

I was chatting with a few folk about this today, it is sad but it is perplexing to me that things have come this far.

A few of my thoughts:

1. It was too bloody expensive - for everyone, especially exhibitors.... and Joe Public paid handsomely through the nose for everything too.
2. They lost a key venue (Blenheim) and that's hard to come back from.
3. There was no real direction or theme and increasingly aspects of the management seemed 'disjointed'.
4. The heart was ripped from many of the competitive events (not just the fishing) which for many was the sole reason for attending.
5. It was far too bloody expensive.

I wonder if this will benefit the more local game fairs like the Scottish one, perhaps the trade might take stands at these now instead of the CLA?

I hope so. Actually, I think there's mileage in something like the old Tweed Fair..... my lobbying hat is getting dusted off  :z13

Wonder if it means more specialist shows like Fly Fest will get a little bigger?

I think smaller more focused events may be the way forward, so it's plausible Fly Fest will grow  :z16

Should bring back the  Straloch fair at Newmacher.

Aye only went the once but it was well attended that year, Nae fishing or casting competitions sadly  :z8 :z8 it was all shooting Clays pigeons and Air Rifle target shooting, may have been gun dogs and sheep dog trials as well but canae remember now
If there had been a pond for casting could have been a good local fair.

Nae sure why it stopped  :z8 :z8

I thought there was a pond. I remember going to one somewhere round there, sure it was Staloch, and there was a pond set out for distance and accuracy casting. Pretty sure Somers was there too.

It was the 80s i was there Rob so you will remember better than me for sure. Could well have been a pond for casting but i just cant remember really  i was to busy trying to zero in a faulty telescopic site on my weihrauch HW80 air rifle   :cry :cry Nae that i would have done much i used to shake worse than a jakey in need of ale  :z4.

Be interesting to know if it stopped through poor attendances   :z8 :z8

Had a message from a chum down south last night, he sent me this link:

So something may rise from the ashes of the CLA after all.

Yes, must confess that I had those thoughts too Marc :z3

In fairness it says bugger all about casting Marc, although fishing is mentioned I am sure.

The future of competitive fly casting at anything other than domestic level is somewhat under threat. There have been false starts before led by well known UK casters and anglers that haven't necessarily done too much to help our standing in terms of bringing international events to the UK - something the CLA was always good at, bringing internationally recognised folk to the UK - so I am more than happy to lend my support to Lee Cummings efforts.

Casting aside, it's good to know that fishing is in the thoughts at this new event.

From what I've read, the man behind this new project appears to have a clear interest in the shooting side of things Hamish and I have no idea who else might be involved in the plans.

I'm certainly hoping that it could have the makings of a good event

Cheers

yeah, somewhere between dogs and big 4x4 tyres...  :roll
"Fishing and working dog demonstrations will also play a key part – and negotiations are underway with a number of motor vehicle manufacturers."

Whether angling has a big presence or not the thing is that at least the idea of that sort of show lives on, and that's a good thing IMHO.

Personally I think the future of angling at shows lies in its own event - if it works for fly tying it can work for angling as a whole.
We'll see. I have a cunning plan but neither the time, contacts or money to make it happen.
It was ever thus :z4

Seems we possibly have a 'UK Game Fair' at the NAEC Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 22nd to 24th July 2016 ..... and a 'Great British Game Fair' at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire on 22nd to 24th July 2016 ?

The Belvoir one looks good, here is hoping they get the pricing right.

.................. and resurrected as 'The Game Fair'? :X1

Quote
‘New investors have secured the future of the 58th Game Fair, keeping the Game Fair team intact who, together, hold the extensive experience required to put on this iconic event. Ragley Hall, Warwickshire has been confirmed for 29th – 31st July 2016 and for 2018 when we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Game Fair.

An expansive overhaul is planned to ensure the Game Fair moves forward in the right direction, giving visitors, exhibitors, organisations and partners the opportunity to be part of the annual countryside event in a way which enhances their business and experiences.

New affordable pricing structures for visitor tickets and exhibitor stands will be announced in due course, along with new memberships, VIP options, camping and hospitality enabling all to enjoy the event in their own way…

The Game Fair’s Event Director Tony Wall said; “following the devastating news the CLA announced last month we are all, as a team, delighted to be part of the continuation of the Game Fair, keeping it on the original planned 29th – 31st July at Ragley Hall is just fantastic.”’
