Like many who take part in outdoor sports, anglers do follow the weather forecasts and conditions closely.
While temperature figures in the lower twenties have regularly featured on the charts, these have been restricted to the southern half of the country. Up here in the North East, we have had to be content with the much lower temperatures. The good news is that the trout prefer the cooler conditions but we humans do like to feel a bit of sun on our backs.
At Lochter Fishery, Oldmeldrum, the past week has been cool and windy and while anglers were unable to delayer they did find that the fishing was good.
Walter Senior, inventor of the famous WSW kept three and returned seventeen while his fishing pal Davy Wood kept three and returned twelve. Naturally they used the WSW. Regular visitors to Lochter, Denny and Gordy Mackay from Inverness stuck with their favorite buzzers and had eight and six respectively. Buzzers were the choice of Scott Bertram and eleven trout agreed with his selection. Jim Dalziel plumped for the hares ear and tempted nine, bibio nymphs worked for Mike Falconer who had eight, M. Harrison had nine on damsels and Bill Bain twelve on a variety of lures.
On the evenings when the wind dropped away there have been some good rises. Duncan Anderson had a good night with eight on black ants and klink hammers while Ryan Forbes from Fyvie did even better netting eleven on buzzers and small dries.
Let us hope that we get some barbeque evenings that tempt even more trout to the surface.
