Title: Early Days
Post by: Mike Barrio on 10/12/2014 at 14:59
Going through my old slides and having found a photo at Lake Taupo in the 1970s was good fun

What about you guys ..... Have you got any old photos from your early days fishing to share?

Cheers
Mike

Re the Duffel coat, there was no such thing as specialised fishing clothing back in the day. I remember my old mans fishing attire (rain , hail or shine) was a sports jacket and a pair of flannels  :z4

I would post some photos but cant find anything since we moved house  :z6

We went on boat trips without a lifejacket and without any warning signs about slippery floors, leaning over the side, sharp propellers etc etc .......... and we survived :z12

Not sure what year this was but it could be 87,88,89,90  :z8 :z8

What i do remember is it was the last day of the season and i caught the larger of the 2 fish worming on the Ury with my old 12ft Shakespeare worming rod i hooked it in the Caben pot and after a great tussle we had a right carry on hand tailing it as we had no net or tailer.
The fella i was fishing with that day took a few goes to grab it , Not his fault at all it just tricky getting it without falling in and i was getting a we tad flustered  :z14 :z14 :z14 :z14 :z8 :z8 but we got on to the bank in the end  :z16.
A wee while later we headed  up to the KA Bar for a few ales  :z18 :z18 and decided on who was getting what cut including the bar man.
The other fish was caught by my mate in either the bridge stream or red brig.

I think it was the last time i fished the worm and looking back it is a horrible way to catch a Salmon but back in that days it was either Devons or Worms and before it was banned the shrimp or prawn. and am not sure you could catch a Salmon in the Ury with anything other than a worm .
Any way changed days now for the better with most folk now fishing the fly.

I think it was a tad over 11lb.
