Great 'quality controllers' Marc, I think they kept the fish stock healthy and they were always very welcome as far as I was concerned :z16
...... and as I've said before, fishing is not all about catching fish, it was great that anglers could see wildlife like this when out on the water at Haddo :cool:

Love the fly tying bit to, no vice. My ex wife's grandmother used to tie flies, well, specifically build the wings for salmon flies for a tackle shop in Aberdeen. I believe it was Belmont Street and upstairs above a tackle shop. Playfairs?

apart from the special quality of these feathers the best part is the feathers are harvested by careful selective plucking and not killing the bird. in the same frame of mind that you don't chop down a tree to get an apple. :cool:

on the other hand, I've had some nice feathers from them by asking for dropped feathers, notably a few big vulture feathers that are otherwise impossible to get legally :wink

I clearly remember another amazing shower like this coming over Haddo, we were on the edge of the storm and the folk fishing to the left of the hut were in the sun and dry ..... but the folk fishing to the right got absolutely soaked and I could hardly see them :shock

My god it was wet that day and that fish was like a bag of cement. The joy of trawling is that you just don't know what is going to hit the lure and if you have never tried trawling, you should. It can be a real day saver when the weather is against you and there is no wind.
If I can also just point out that that fish was a real turning point in my life. It was the last Brown trout that I killed.

although it might not be the most ideal manner i can't see why not. as any other Spey cast the anchor can be placed at different angles.
in this case, just as with a single Spey, start the sweep with the rod tip closer to the bank instead of straight down on the dangle to vary the anchor position point.
if you do manage to hook the back of your head please be sure to get this on film and share it with us, ok ? :z4 :cool: :z4
anyhow, this cast is definitely one to practice in different circumstances before fishing. no hooks/flies !

Done last night...but with a 14" tube fly and a size 5/0 hook :)
When Pike fly fishing I retrieve right to my feet as often Pike will follow. Trying to get a large fly out again, starting with just the leader out the tip is a chore with a Rio Outbound Short. Lots of waving about until the head starts to load the rod.
I therefore thought about the snap slip spey and adjusted it for my needs. A Snap t with a poly leader and fly, use that to anchor as I swept around 20 feet of head around to my left, back towards the fly, sort of a spey to aerialise the line and one false cast and the head was gone :)

Tech talk - Mallard DT on a Loomis GTX(?) 9' #7 witha Teton #6 reel. The reel is now on my bamboo #4, the rod is with someone else and my tennis elbow went away at the same time. There is a #4 Mallard on one of my reels these days though.... :cool:
Fishing - the best days of my trout life with much whooping and hollering and many many "FFS" moments.

Testify is a visual poem adapted from the essay "Testament of a Fisherman" published in 1964 by Michigan author John Voelker.
Over 50 years later we filmed this video on and around the author's home waters of Marquette County on Michigan's Upper Peninsula because we believe the pure trout waters and relaxed pace of life of this region haven't changed much.
Today the need for time on a river and reconnection with nature are more important than ever--and Voelker's words still ring true.
