Angling is not generally thought of as a high risk sport. True that a careless step can lead to wet feet or occasionally a real “drookin” but by and large it is a gentle, peaceful pursuit. However the elements can make the sport more testing. Cold weather and freezing fingers go hand in hand but wind is a real bug bear for anglers or out it another way anglers do suffer from wind. Bird nest fankles and more seriously a fly in the back of the lug are regularly occasioned in stormy weather and the latter can be a very nippy experience.
During the past week the “strong winds “ featured regularly in the weather conditions column of the catch record at Lochter Fishery, Oldmeldrum. In spite of that anglers did turn out and had reasonable success despite the weather.
Allan Patterson had nine on buzzers, Len Davidson had five using nomads, Jim Weir had a lovely fish of 8lbs in his bag of five all attracted by his little devil and Bryan Ross also had an eight pounder among his catch of eight all on that good old standby, the damsel. M Pirie used a white and green fritz to successfully bring five to the net and most anglers managed to pick up a few fish mainly using lures.
Over the festive season the fishery will be closed on 25th and 26th December and on 1st and 2nd January. It will be open all other days to enable anglers to shake off their excesses or ,who knows, to try out the new rod that Santa brought them.
