Title: Rain
Post by: Matt Henderson on 03/10/2013 at 20:45
Chaps what's the story with the Don? It's been biblical rain in Aberdeen and Dyce, my mate says it's chucking it down at Strathdon.  The Dee is at 1ft 4" at Park and the fishpal website is showing 0" at Parkhill?

Any theories?

Cheers. Matt

Had maybe an inch or two at Kintore Matt, not what I expected and Culfork gauge hardly moved.

Cheers

Went onto the SEPA website, looks like Culfork is up 10cm compared to this morning, I make that 4"? Must be bad data going to the fishpal website. Does it feel like more rain than an inch rise at Kintore?

Not sure mate, 4" at Culfork is nothing when it was so low.  Wasn't as wet here as it was in Banchory I don't think, Don here looks little different at 18:30 to it did at 06:30.  Will post tomorrow AM on state.

Hardly rained in Inverurie today, just a light drizzle. There was a wee shower about 20 minutes ago though.

Cheers
Mike

Too right Mike! Preferably for about three or four days!

The Dee takes its run off from rock, so when it rains, it rises rapidly, and drops fairly quickly. The Don takes its run off from farmland and moor. When dry, the moors especially, soak up the excess and lets it run off very slowly.

Well thats how I understand it anyway. Once the moors are "full", then we see a more rapid rise.

It looks like anything East of the Spey and North of the Dee has missed out on the rain of the past day or two.
Even 6 inches on the Parkhill guage ( normally a low level) would seem like a veritable flood at the moment. In so far as I can recall there has been no meaningful rise in the Don this season that was not due to snowmelt.
I hope that there is some improvement in days to come.

The Dee at Crathes bridge looked ace at 08.30 today. The Feugh was brown with lots of white water but the Dee  itself was back to a sensible height.
Good luck Eddie  :z16

There were grilse trying to get up the Feugh on Monday, with no water what so ever. They must have been stacked one on top of each other in the "pool" below. Never seen anything like it. At least they will be up and over now :)

Looks like Don is rising, but not in Kintore's. Hope it's big enough to bring them in.  :z14 :z14
