The weather didn’t help last week, but in between the rain and wind anglers continued to enjoy some good top water sport with fish feeding hard on or near the surface. Catch returns continue to reflect that large numbers of anglers fish either dries or buzzers, but nymphs and lures have tempted fish. Some examples of baskets include N Fallon who departed happy with a lovely grown on 6lbs 9 ozs rainbow taken on a dry. G Anderson broke into double figures, best at 4lbs, using lures and buzzers, while visiting angler P Guy tempted 12, best at 5lbs, on dries. J Rennie averaged over 15 for his 3 visits, and his bags included an 8lbs bow and his best ever bow circa 14 lbs taken on a Royal Coachman, size 14. I Sutherland tied with J Rennie for top rod with 16, all on dries, best at 5lbs.
NE Challenge Report
Fishing started in ideal conditions with high cloud, no rain and light winds. With the fish rising well, anglers were looking forward to the match. While it soon became apparent that anglers were using a variety of flies, they were all using floating lines. R Ewen from Bill Bain’s Fishers (BBF) and I Sutherland from the Gordon Fly Fishers (GFF) were soon bagged up, but could they maintain their success over the 4 hours? Unaware that Scot Caryle of Donside Fishers had already weighed in a much admired 8lbs 14 ozs rainbow from his first peg, R Ewen was only slightly disappointed when he learnt his 7lbs 15ozs bow might not be the biggest fish. As the match progress, the wind dropped away and while a good olive hatch began to develop, so did the caennis. The result was that anglers were finding it increasingly challenging to attract fish, despite large number of trout rising and nymphing. With some anglers frustrated, the match ended with R Ewen taking top spot with 14 fish for 40lbs 2oz winning a Lureflash Rucksack. I Sutherland was second with 9 fish for 23lbs 2ozs, winning a Lureflash Quality Priest. The winning team was BFF, followed by Donside Fishers, the GFFs and finally the Kintore Angling Club. After 3 rounds the competition is still open with the GFFs leading on 12 pts, with BBFs hard on their heels with 11 pts. In 3rd place is the Kintore Angling Club, followed by the Donside Fishers and the Seaforth Angling Club. The next match is another evening match on Sunday 19 Aug.
