Hi All,
We will be running a winter casting league from October - Feb this winter one Sunday per month with the best of four to count to for final places. The venue will is to be confirmed, there are several sites I am still looking at but it will be Aberdeenshire.
Overall first place after all five rounds will receive the soon to be coveted but not yet bought Barrio Fly Lines Shield there will also be other prizes up for grabs and definitely something in there for highest placing non instructors.
Disciplines will be
#5 full line distance
#7 full line distance
Trout accuracy
27g floating shooting head (sea trout distance)
Overhead salmon distance.
This will be run (where possible and practical) to World Championship rules which can be found here http://www.wcflycasting.com/upload/Rules_Flycasting.pdf (http://www.wcflycasting.com/upload/Rules_Flycasting.pdf) A final set of rules for our league will appear here soon. There will be tackle available for use should you not have an outfit suitable for a particular event.
So far I have had quite a bit of interest, if you would be interested in taking part please register interest below or drop me a PM or. If you are not a forum member I can be contacted at Orvis in Banchory Tuesday to Saturday on 01330 824 319.
Cheers

Hi Ben,
Interesting. Could you please answer a few questions?
Is there a cost involved?
I noticed in the Trout rules they dictate that you must use a Mastery Expert Distance line yet Mikes lines are often quoted. Could you please clarify.
Am I right in saying that this is a private event and not tied in to other oganisations?
Cheers

Hi Rob,
Is there a cost involved?
If there is it will be buttons, I'll know this once I have confirmed the venue. There certainly will not be any profit made from the league.

This is one of the reasons that I added the note about a full set of rules being available soon. We need to sort the line situation for the full line events. For the sake of keeping things on a level playing field one line is the sensible choice, not the MED mainly for reasons of cost and availability. However, I don't want to see anyone putting off taking part because they cannot afford to buy the approved line. I don't really want to clog up the thread discussing this here.
Am I right in saying that this is a private event and not tied in to other oganisations?
Correct.
Are you going to take part Rob?
Cheers

I like everything but the accuracy..... but I guess Rob has to have something to do when he's not not fly fishing for pike or maybe drowning maggots and/or worms :z7
I will endeavour to make the trip down from Inverness-shire for this, should be fun and about time we had something 'local'.

AH, thanks Jim, nice image.
Yes, the casting was great fun today. The weather was kind, mostly, and was grand catching up with folks. Some interesting chat about short lines for river fishing too.
I really, really failed to get to grips with that 55' salmon casting thing. Nice to have a challenge to work on for next time....
I think it's killed my back, certainly felt it during the 3 subsequent hours of bass practice with the ska band this afternoon. (aka-SKA's 8th annual Skalloween event is next sat, 2nd Nov in Aberdeen for anyone that likes 2-Tone and old ska tunes).
I'm sure Ben will post the scores once he's stopped playing with his lovely sparkly hula hoops :-)

Really pleased that you guys liked the light line prototypes Iain, they'll be available in the not too distant future. Some great feedback on these today thanks, your thoughts, as always, do make a difference to the final products
Great seeing everybody enjoying the accuracy game :z16
Best wishes

Hi All,
Thanks to those who turned up to cast, not great conditions and this was reflected by the distances cast. Wind seemed to be coming from all directions at once.
Some really good casts from all, results are attached as an excel sheet. Longest cast / most hits gets one point, shortest / lowest gets 9 for scoring purposes. Will get some pics up later on, off fishing just now.
Cheers

Sounds like a cracking day, sorry to have missed it, sadly had to collect mum-in-law off the train early afternoon (poor timing on my part). Didn't even have time for a quick cast as a consolation.
Hope to be able to make next one, heading into hospital for a wee op so attendance will depend on this.

Ditto with H re the next one, wonder what the fitba players in the background made of it all though? :z4
-
disappointed in my failure to launch the salmon line, though not surprising as I never chuck anything double-handed overhead. ever. Would have got better distance chucking the rod like a javelin!
I've got a couple of DT spey lines that I don't/won't use - guessing one of them could be cut and shortened to make a head that I could muck about with? Don't know length or profiles of the spey lines; came 2nd hand from Hamish with an Orvis spey reel. i've got a 14 footer, 9/10 rating.
Any hints on the best way to go about trimming a line down to size?
-
Have you got jewellers scales Iain? Cut something to about 55 - 60' long that weighs approximately 45 - 50 grams, that would be a mximum on your rod.
Cheers
Ben

good stuff from Ben.
Iain, be sure to start off on the heavier/longer side until you get it just right.
you can always cut back but you can't (easily) add line… :wink
cheers,
marc
btw, nice pics ! looks like it was a blast :z16
-
you can always cut back but you can't (easily) add line… :wink
thanks Ben, Marc - yes, have kitchen scales & tape measure, so that's a DIY plan for the weekend.
if it's a DT line, ie tapered at both ends, is this the right place to cut:
xxxXXX [cut here] XXXxxx
or
xxxXXXXXX [cut here] xxx
not that it matters too much, it's not gonna be a fishing line
-
it doesn't really matter Iain as the head will always be out of the rod tip whenever used but, splicing in the middle will make it a little easier to do. should you want to shorten it later you'll still be working with two ends of equal diameter.
btw, good on you for keeping a back taper instead of just going from a blunt, thick back of head to shooting line :z16
you can always reduce the taper tips as needed later.
cheers,
marc
-
Iain, i don't know what you're familiar with but here's 3 ways to make a line connection.
no. 2 here is very good. http://www.sexyloops.com/articles/smoothconnections.shtml
(it's stronger than you need. more for fishing, but it is very smooth.
easiest and fastest (specially in the field) http://www.sexyloops.com/articles/smoothconnectionsrevisited.shtml
this one has sexy lumps ! :z16

Hi Iain,
Not sure how far you want to go with this but I do the following......
Using the AFFTA standard for 30' of line make an approximation of the length you will need, this should give you just about a suitable starting point and give you an idea of weight of line you will need for the required length. Measure the entire length of DT you have decided then wind the whole lot on to an empty line spool of known mass, pull off line until you reach the weight you are looking for. By measuring the length of line you have pull off the spool you will know how long the head is for the weight. Be careful how the end of the line is supported as it comes off the spool, if allowed to droop down and pull on the scale platform or is held in such a way that it is reducing pressure on the scale you will get a bum reading.
Cheers

hi mike - might take you up on that. Stinking with a flu bug today, so stuck at home, bored and with time to kill. Ideal for this kinda project. Have dug out some old lines and the scales and will have a go at making up the line today. We'll see how it goes. My scales are accurate-ish to about a gram or so, good enough!
thanks Ben for the guidance too - yup, dug out some empty spools, ready to go!

my own form of OCD (Organisationally Completely Dishevelled) meant it took a while to find the old spey lines and spools.

all those 23 minutes of practicing last week were worth it... it annoyed me that I couldn't cast it last time out, so it was satisfying to be able to do better this time out. Was pretty hungover today - that's my excuse for the rest of the scores.
Dan nailed the accuracy 11 hits, but really close with almost every cast. impressive

Another great day and some impressive casting by everyone. :z16
As for the accuracy, guess I just got lucky today, as last time I only got 2.

Sorry i missed this one as well, still recovering and looks like will be for a while yet. :cry

Oy mr d I cast the 5 wt 70 odd feet with a busted hand, surely that rates an honorable mention in dispatches :X2
74'8" to be exact Pete, about the same as you cast last time with a non busted hand :z4 I should have credited your final cast,
I left it out as I posted a screen shot of the official results, had I recorded your chuck then I would have had to score you a maximum of 7 points for the rest of the events meaning you would have been last today and last overall :z7
Apart from Pete who valiantly threw the #5 whilst almost mortally wounded, there was some really good casting today. Cracking performance by Dan on the accuracy and the DHD practice was definitely evident Iain. Must do some myself!
Cheers

Good luck out there today, looks a bit wild!

The guys were preparing to head out on the park, but not for me today, that sleet and wind is not my idea of fun! :z4

good call! I'm sat at kitchen table doing some ADAA work on the laptop, drinking coffee, listening the wind batter the windows... I'm better off here!
-
Pathetic, both of you :z4
Howling wind, sideways rain & sleet. Met office observations at Dyce put wind at 26 -30MPH gusting 49 - 51MPH, may have been OK if it was not for the geography of the park which makes things gusty & inconsistent on the best of days.
Thanks to those who turned out, there should be an award simply for attendance today!
Results with best throws in red.

New series sea trout record for Kev, 147'
New series Salmon record for Pete 172' This is especially impressive as only one month ago, Peter was almost disabled following surgery to correct whip finishers wrist. (happy this time McCallum? :z4)
Well done guys!

Why not use a float tube, you won't need to cast so far to reach the end of the tape! :X2
-
Why don't you turn out to one of the events and find out why that's just a daft idea Rob :wink
H
-
Pathetic, both of you :z4
yup, pathetically warm and dry... I did look out the window a few times, shaking my head, muttering, "madness...". Good effort getting out there!
-
I'm afraid I will not be able to attend the final event next month either :roll
There's a memorial service on that day to commemorate the Coastguards who died in the Kessock Ferry disaster of 120 years ago and as the senior officer in the area I need to be there.

Wasn't expecting you anyway Hamish, better excuse than the Grand Prix though :z7

Great fun this afternoon, wind was most unpleasant at times (unless it was in your favour). Some really good casting today, Pete and Dan were outstanding with the DHD :z16
We all threw the T38 today at the end for fun, not quite sure how much fun it actually was but it does go a long way on the odd occasion you can hook one up without twatting yourself.
Results from today

For those that made enough sessions to place, overall results are as follows, we will probably have another get together in a few weeks once the weather settles a bit.

I've included Peter in this as his average distance over the three events he attended was rather impressive
Cheers
Ben
Edit - Revised points for overall result, doesn't change placings

Don't think they were competition casts, there's only one tape out, just playing with T38 gear.
We'll be having another gathering very soon, Will. Why do you come and cast, then you'll be able to keep me in check :X
(eagerly awaiting excuses) :z4
Ben
-
I'll come up and stand around in the gales watching you cast. Will there be any tea/biscuits?
You know I've officially retired from chucking distance*. :X2
W.
*Obviously the definition of "distance" is entirely down to me, and is almost exclusively not as far as Ben's, Kev's, Peter's, Mike's etc.
-
If you turn up in Catherines hat, I promise to bring some tea Will. You should get back at the distance stuff, keeps you fit mate :wink
I'll bring the T38 down at the end of March.
Ben
