Right guys I have decided that over the winter I am going to have a go at building my first fly rod. Now I know I could manage between the SBS on the forum and posting when I have questions/problems, but was wondering is there any good rod building books that anyone would recommend?

Not many for normal rods, that's why I did the SBS. :z16
I have a good few books about building bamboo though :z7
If you use the SBS and do some research Into componants . Then you will manage fine
Plenty of us on here now, with some experience to answer any questions :z18
And maybe even lend some tools.
So ask away and maybe we can get a nice winter topic going :z3

You don't fancy doing an SBS for stripping rings on a rod? :X2
I have 3 rods that I need to replace rings on over the Winter :cry
and do not want to wreck the Blanks :oops

Got a couple of kits that I am looking at, so once I have decided what one to go for I am sure I will have loads of questions for yourself and other experienced guys on here.

I have just stripped 3 factory built carp rods and cleaned up the blanks.
Heat gun, sharp knife to make an initial cut, peal off the warmed epoxy, remove thread and then use your thumb nail to remove any residue. Sorted.
If the blanks are not varnished, clean up with T-Cut.

If you cut the threads on top of the ring foot, so you don't go near the blank, then the whipping should peel off as Rob describes. You may not even need to heat it, although it would help with the peeling :z16
Thumb nails are all you should need to clean, if you are putting the rings in the same place, you not even need to do that :wink, unless the the thread doesn't lie flat.
Practice first, you will find its dead easy, so don't worry about it too much :z18

Looking forward to seeing some more builds on here this winter!
I built my first this time last year using sandys guide :z16 and it has been my go to rod all year.
Sure It wasn't a perfect build and there are some things I would tweak next time but that's all part of the fun! As a fishing rod I have full confidence in it!
Now all I need to decide is whether I want a 9ft 5wt or a switch rod more!
If anyone is thinking of building, just go for it!
