Title: Collapsible wading stick
Post by: Matt Henderson on 12/09/2012 at 19:59
All,

After a spot of evening fishing I've decided that I need a collapsible wading stick. Can anybody recommend one?

Cheers Matt

Have one don't like it. It had a tendency to collapse when you did not want it to  :z10

I bought mine off fleabay and suffered similar probs to Jim. My solution?

Take out the scabby elastic (4mm) and put in much more manly bungee.....problem solved  :z16

Thanks chaps.  I'm going to get the snowbee one I think.  Collapsible, and has a rubber stopper on the end too http://www.snowbee.co.uk/fly-fishing/wading-equipment/

cheers

Matt I use a proper weighted hazel stick which is a proper pain in the arse for getting in the way at all the wrong times but....if and when I need it I know it will support me and not...well collapse basically.
I only use it early season when the water can be high and always will be cold. Same can be said for late season I suppose but my river season is mostly finished by now.
I have heard great things about the orvis collapsible and have thought about getting one but maybe the snowbee is similar.

Me too Noel.  But I find if out fishing it's another thing to carry about and when Salmon fishing, there is nothing surer than getting the perfect cast only to find that it shoots about six inches because all of the running line is somehow wrapped around your wading stick.  However on Monday night whilst exiting a pool I nearly went in over my head because it dropped off very quickly and it was dark so couldn't see the tell tale darkening of the water.  Hence why I'm thinking of a collapsible one.

Matt,

I always carry my Scierra collapsible wading staff with me and use it quite a bit, certainly much more than I thought I would and can guarantee that it has saved a soaking on a fair few occasions.

Two down sides that have now been remedied;

coat the spogotty bits with vaseline and this will save you hurting your arms or having to walk about with it in the erect state due to not being able to part a section. Now that I do this it is deployed and stowed easy peasy.

forget the pointless lanyard which comes with the staff and get a Gear Keeper (orvis do one) retractable lanyard which is a must, saves you having the handle swaying about in the water uncontrollably or having to 'pull anchor' every time you want to move.

The staff cost me £29.99 and the sections are black on my one - not the fish scaring silver which is shown in most of the adverts.

There isn't a gun rest or compass with it but then I haven't encountered any wolves or had to march on a bearing while out fishing for a year or two now.

Morning Iain,

Aye I'm not quite sure why thye think I might want a gun rest or compass mount.  However was quite taken by the rubber foot, is the sicerra one rubber or pointy?

Thanks

Matt

pointy, but it's not going to get stuck between rocks.

I bought a rubber foot to fit onto the bottom but I don't think it's necessary.

I have a Sharpes Spey for going places I should not be really, heavy & cumbersome but the very best when in heavy currents or deep or cold water.  I never go anywhere without my folding staff, it's a Folstaff one by Orvis that folds up really small and pops together instantly when taken out of it's holster.  Just need to keep the ferrules well waxed or it is a bugger to get apart.
Also used the Snowbee, like the Sharpes it is fairly heavy and I would only use it when I needed something substantial, unless it is required most of the time, it is a pain.  I've never had the Snowbee tele staff collapse on me.  All my staffs are used with a Gear Keeper staff retractor, can be purcahsed from anywhere that sells Rio / Vision or, same thing with an Orvis badge from Orvis.

Cheers

Ben
