Title: bobbin holder

After my recent sessions at the vice my Stonefly bobbin holder has come apart at the ceramic tube. Now normally I would just put a dab of superglue on it and keep using it. BUT to be honest I've never really got on with the holder - it was too light, the ball ends of the arms weren't big enough to clear every spool and it didn't really "feel" right in the hand.

I used to use Tiemco ceramic holders and I still have one that I only use on small Pearsal spools (I bent the arms just to suit the small spools) but I broke the one for the wider spools. The Stonefly scissors are ace, bobbin holder not so much.

So the question is, what do you chaps recommend? I like a ceramic tube (too many past problems with SS) and I might just go and get another Tiemco unless you lot come up with a better suggestion.

hi,
my preferred are:
Rite bobbin ceramic tube (with adjustable spool drag)
Tiemco ceramic tube
Griffiths ceramic tip with plastic spool feet = super-smooth and you can two or three depending on supplier for the price of the others.

Just get another tiemco you know it makes sense

Yes I know it does and I KNOW that is what is going to happen but I have to ask in case I miss out on something  :z4

Very very good for standard spools, great adjustable drag, not so good with the Pearsall's (without re-spooling). The Tiemco's are very good, bought two and used these the most.

Tiemco every time Euan.  All Tiemcos have an adjustable drag, operated with pliers or fingers, they have always served me well.  The Veniard ceramic spigot bobbin holders are good for sub £10, these also have adjustable plier operated drag and can be made to take anything from Pearsalls to UTC.

I may very well be missing something here but I simply do not get why anyone re-spools thread when most bobbin holders are made with bendable legs!

You are and you are not Ben ! I never re-spool - not enough hours in the day as it is ! The Rite Bobbin (Standard) I bought has a single fixed leg and is for Uni sized spools:

The Rite's central spindle is too fat to accomodate a Pearsalls spool so you would have to re-spool the thread. I was told when I bought it you could put two Pearsall's side by side (to fill the spindle)......but you can't !  :mad Other than that it is a very good Bobbin especially if you only use Uni Thread, Nano Silk type spools. Fits the hand really well, shortish working length.

The Tiemco's are for the money the best I have used, as you say no slippage and 'manual' drag adjustment !

...shoulda said. I use Spiderweb quite a lot (Klinks, and Paraduns the Van Klinken way - it's how I learned to tie them). The Standard Rite is the bollox for this thread as the drag can be set absolutely right with no fear of a snaggy "yank" breaking it. It is sliky smooth with no judders.

I have a few C&F style bobbin holders, the midge one in particular is a class piece of kit  :z16

as noted below, it's very smooth, predictable (meaning no 'jumps') and adjustable from very tight to very loose.
i forgot to mention that i only use them on my two main colors of thread that stay on the holders permanently: black and white, as they're not the easiest to change spools.
other colors go on different 'standard' design bobbin holders.

Tiemco - There is no substitute  :z16

Black tube model is the dogs sphericals. I'm such a twat for trying other brands  :X1
If you don't have a Tiemco bobbin go and get one.
