Gairloch angling club has had its local river taken back by the new estate owner , he has said that club members can have limited access at the estates discretion so some consolation, at the same time Letterewe Estate ( of late Dutchman fame) has decide that we cant have a club boat on the Fionn Loch this year, it definitely gives a feeling of being got at
its a pity that these estates are not part of the national heritage ,and able to be enjoyed by all, we are only a small local club , like most clubs, constituted as a benevolent society, so we only have money season to season for our boats etc.
it would seem that we are at the mercy of the landowners who now want to make money from the fishings, ???

Sorry to here of your loss of fishing.
A question..are the landowners family/resident on the estate/owned by a consortium/owned by an absent person and managed by an estate manager?
Sometime appealing to the right person gets results.

I suspect that very few river beats break even, let alone make any money ...... as the amount that they pay to the fishery boards is rising all the time?
Best wishes

The river is a sole owner job and he is convinced he is going to make money from it, we have had a meeting with him and it was laid on the line , he is also reopening the Loch Maree hotel as a Fishing hotel, a real optimist this guy,the other business with the Fionn Loch, that is a consortium ,and the estate factor is stopping it this season to stop a precedent similar to rights of way,we have never been able to have a reasonable dialogue with the factor, so we must bite the bullet

Maybe we Scots should have the same river tenure system as pertains in New Zealand. In NZ river fishing is available to all and is not at the discretion of the landowner and whatever charges he/she decides to make and the public have the right to access the river bank for one chain ,22 yards, on either bank.
