By the very title I'm expecting a dogs abuse on this one but here goes.
My Greys bamboo has a screw in rubber end cap (go on someone say it - BUTT PLUG!) :mad :z7
I have always wanted to replace it with a wooden or metal end cap. Anyone know where I can get such a thing? I've been round the usual suspects on the interweb with no joy. Mind you some of the Google searches had the University web filter kicking in! Didn't know you could do that with a fly rod...
So, yes I want something other than rubber on the end of my rod. There, I've said it.
Let the comments begin...

It's just one example but:

H,
I don't think that will work. The reel seat has a 3/8" threaded hole to take the standard rubber bumper that goes on salmon rods.
I'm now of a mind to chop it up and mount a small piece of Reindeer antler on the threaded section. I have some spare and it might look quite nice.
What I would like is the one off your old Greys. Iirc, it was rosewood and threaded and lovely... :z13
Since a new rubber bumper cost £2.50 then I think the knife is coming out tonight :grin

You could go to a hardware store & get a 3/8" bolt cut off the head & set that into the Antler,
or use a wooden dowell, use a 3/8" nut & it should thread itself.

Or I could nip down the other Uni AV office and get one for free!
Smart thinking Alex. Much easier to drill the antler than carve / rout it for a hex head.
Cheers,

Be careful its not just any 3/8th thread its actually BSF a finer thread than the normal Whitworth, you could cut the rubber off your button and glue the threaded bit into a suitable rose wood or antler piece, thinking about the thread its getting harder to get Imperial threaded bolts its always Metric now easgach1

You're right it is BSF Easgach.
However one of the joys of working at a 500 year old university is that there is a supply of odd crap like that in the workshop. One bolt acquired, cut to size and glued into a piece of reindeer antler. At some point soon I'll get round to shaping it. I just need to blag the sander off my mate and I'm good to go.
This might turn out nicer than the quick bodge I had in mind.
If you need any of that size PM me :wink

Euan.
Why did you photograph it against the backdrop of your suit jacket? :z7
I liked the no nonsense butt button to be honest :z8.
What is the spec of your rod again? I've forgotten.

Iain,
"Why did you photograph it against the backdrop of your suit jacket? "
Because the option was a pink towel or a scabby workbench and I thought that my tweed jacket was very "dry fly"! :grin
"What is the spec of your rod again? I've forgotten."
Greys 7'6", #3/4 with a WF4 GT90 on a Teton small arbour #6 reel.
"looks like a mushroom growing out of your butt.

Sandy, you're right. Magic mushroom :z4 :z4 :z4 :z4 :z4
I've had an offer to make one from wood and that might still happen. I wanted to work some reindeer antler on something other than my next knife to see how it worked. Now I know, I'll get on with the knife. Reindeer is not like Roe, it's harder but still workable with a good file. The centre is harder too and is a bitch to file out.
I might even post pictures of them some time...
