All the large fisheries charge more at a weekend why ?? is it not the same boats same water same limit
most people work Mon to Fri  i think, is this a form of discrimination

Would have thought that higher demand at the weekends drives the price up, discrimination is a bit of a strong term to use in this situation.

I echo your thoughts Robbie.

My opinion is that Fisheries are a business at the end of the day and considering the limited profits involved I dont have an issue with fisheries charging extra at weekends.

It is maybe better to look at it the other way round?  Less people visit fisheries during the week so fisheries charge less to try and encourage more anglers to visit.........

Just my 2p worth

I'm not much of a big Loch Big Boat Big Venue fisherperson But.....

2 guys fishing an 8 hour day session in a boat on a saturday

£54 /2 = £27 each
£12 for arguments sake for a 8hr c&r ticket would sound acceptable to most, surely. So that's the 'purely fishing' cost sorted.
10 fish per boat = 5 per angler @ lets say £3.00 per fish (most places have a sliding scale from, say £6 to £2.50 per fish when it's calculated)
Now we've got our £27 without looking at boat costs.

If you liked the place and wanted to fish there a few times a week it would become expensive but then you get nowt for nowt nowadays.

If I compare these costs with some of my other passtimes , £15 for a medium glass of Chardonay, £27 for a days fishing seems cheap  :wink

A trip to glasgow to watch the fitba, well thats £100 plus and thats just for 90 minutes.

I for one think we get a bargain as far as fishing is concerned.

Like I said I know where you guys are coming from but whatever way you cut it, me fishing alone (which is my norm) from a boat on Saturday will cost me £54 !!!

Fadpasser,

Although I do like good company in a boat I also appreciate the opportunity to sit on my lonesome and contemplate and therefore this type of venture is not feasible.
However, as you seem to have a head like some form of kitten then perhaps cosmetic surgey might help in getting a boat partner.  :z4

Like everything else its all relative .

I can fish 3 miles of the Ythan for £65 a season or tube Lochindorb for free.

The cost of fuel is now making fishing more expensive unless its on your doorstep.

discrimination is a bit of a strong term to use in this situation.

Ok i accept it is over the top to use such strong words , however i still stand by that
it is wrong in my opinion to charge more depending on what day it is
in my local a pint of larger is the same price regardless of what day it is and the demand is higher at the weekend

Although I do not agree with Menteith charging higher prices on a weekend it is a business at the end of the day with really quite high overheads - I wouldn't like to think about how much it costs to run as a commercial venture :shock
Mind you, has that higher rate at weekends not been the policy there since the year 'dot' :?

Perhaps a positive 'spin' would be to say the week days are actually discounted over the usual rate :wink

Jim - £15 for a medium glass of Chardonnay ??? :shock Holy crap, that must be some seriously good Chardonnay :z7

I wouldn't pay that to fish for stockies but each to their own and it's obviously deemed worth it by enough folk. Per hr its still cheap when compared to a lot of other activities. Anyone here done any driven shooting for example. Now that can quickly take care of your pay packet.

I think the prices are fine for a water of that size and stature whether you class it as stockie bashing or not. To put it into context, for somewhere that regulary holds the national final of fly fishing in scotland at that price whether weekend or not would be good value for money!
St Andrews the home of golf compared to a normal golf course is far more pricier and yes they make it even more expensive at the weekend also!
For a days fishing on a large water with fuel, engine, net provided for the best part of £30 is a cheap in my opinion, look at the quality of fish in Menteith  :wink

I dont think its too bad for two sharing a boat on what is meant to be one of Scotlands top venues.

I agree that it would be more accurate to consider weekdays discounted.  My initial thoughts were that the priced seemed very high, but when someone listed the numbers it put them into perspective.

Just one thought I'd like to put out there, should a stocked fishery not charge more than a wild fishery as running costs are higher?  :z2

Wild fisheries shouldn't be charging at all in my opinion especially with the state of the boats on some I have fished. When I first moved to Scotland the idea of paying for fishing was such an alien concept to me that it took about 2 years before I bought my first permit and fished for wild fish.

It is £8.50 more for a single angler on Butterstone than Menteith midweek!

I have already heard a few clubs have pulled there outings off of butterstone this year and with a price like that I bet alot of single anglers will be giving it a miss also!

Very True Derek,
I just had a pall drop into the house on his way back from rescobie, said it fished well today £38 for a 2 man boat and allowed to keep 8 fish, good value for a chance to hook a good few monsters!

I hear what you're saying Baz, great value, but £38 isn't even enough to cover the cost of eight 2 pounders :z8

No Ewan as it happens i haven't so you can stick the boot in by saying i don't know what i'm talking about.  I know some of it must be excellent though.

I was however invited down to fish a well known section some time back (for mortgage amounts) which included all the do's and dont's associated and was also informed it would be good 'cause they'd recently topped up the stock level with some large browns which would be good to go for as they wouldn't be too spooky or fussy

I really wanted to go for the experience, prestige and heritage surrounding it all but sadly i was due to be elsewhere that particular few days and had to decline.  So all my info based on the build up to that failed trip and other second hand reports.

Maybe some day.

No no Allan I didn't mean it that way.  I was going to ask what it was you didn't like if you had been and that I can thouroughly recommend it if you hadn't.  I think it's the sort of thing every Fly fisherman should try to do once.

You're right in that it is violently expensive on almost all of the beats but I suppose that's dictated by the market to fish on such an "esteemed" and "fabled" river system.  I've spoken to some people down there who have travelled from all over the world to specifically fish the Test or Itchen or whatever.  I have had all realatives get me vouchers for birthday's, Christmas etc for the last couple of years which eases the pain!  Some of the other chalkstreams (Avon, Nadder, Lambourne, Kennet, Wylye etc) are a lot cheaper and just as scenic and enjoyable.

Your also right that there are many beats on the Test (and other chalkstreams) that supplement their wild fish with stocked Browns but what managed trout rivers don't nowadays?  Some parts of the Don do I believe?  At least they use stock bred from the wild river fish nowadays.  All rainbows are to be killed if caught...The Itchen does have some beats that are totally "wild" and unstocked but then the prices become ridiculous.

Personally, I love it on the chalkstreams.  I make several "pilgramages" a year (pretending to visit the parents!) and have been really lucky so far in that I always seem to get the beats to myself and it is idyllic, get away from it all stuff with Gin clear water and beautiful fish.  It is a different type of fishing with as much (if not more) watching and stalking than actual casting and some of the rules (e.g. upstream dry only until July, upstream dry and "traditional" nymph only therafter, no wading etc) can seem a bit stuffy but they're their rivers and their rules...you soon get used to it. Some beats are a lot more relaxed than others too.  I also think that there is a lot of rubbish written about how to fish Chalkstreams which scares people off thinking that they have to be some sort of super-human with Jedi instincts to dare to chuck a fly on the water.  Any reasonably experienced fisherman will have a great time and catch fish.  Any novice will soon become a good fisherman.  Trout are Trout whatever river they're in afterall, they don't know how much you are paying to catch them!

The Grayling fishing in the winter is superb too and very cheap.

I've got my first visit booked for the 2nd of May and am already counting the days.

Cheers,

Ewan
