Title: Anyone else Stuck?
Post by: Ben Dixon on 01/12/2010 at 08:17
Had a LOT of snow overnight last night.  To move my car which was cleared last night would require a shovel, I must have had about 12" fall last night  :shock

Cheers

I got through town to work ok.  But then went to the garage to get my new tyres fitted.  They hadn't cleared their yard when I got there.  I'm pretty sure the focus bellied out before I actually tried to stop it.   :z4 :z4 Oh well I'll just wait for their phonecall to tell me its ready!

Ben - have you considered cross country skis, ski into Kintore and then drive from there.

I made it in to Aberdeen but the roads were the worst so far this year, and we had 9ft of snow last night   :z4

Despite what they are trying to portray on TV seems to be a distinct lack of ploughs / gritters out. Most of the trouble in aberdeen is the volume of traffic, it just needs one car to get stuck or a bump for chaos to ensue  :mad

Maybe some one will come up with the idea to build a bypass round Aberdeen  :wink No thats never going to happen , is it ?

O.K, measured it, just about 8" before I cleared it to go out and get some logs.  Needed the shovel to move it, parked up in deep snow next to the house last night in an attempt to keep car out of the wind / cold as batteries not the best right now.  Went as far as Inverurie and wouldn't want to go much further really, be fun tomorrow if the forecasted temperatures are correct.

I'm stuck - in a s**t job!

Roads are poor - hear that there's a broken down snow plough at the Bridge of Dee, wont be with a damaged blade 'cos the fluggers are never down!

We had 98.76mm of snowfall last night and my igloo is coming along fine  -do I need planning permission?

bleak time of year for the working man.

Know what you mean about the ploughs, if there's been more than one down my road then it's been gritting with bloody snow.  98.76mm Iain are they Irish / European mm or regular Scottish ones  :z4

Baz,

Is that your flybox under that pile of snowballs?  Looks shit out there mate!!

Only if the footprint is greater than 121.75mm in radius, so you should be fine Iain  :z7

Yes, B977 is a bit crap.  Had to go out to get fags, milk and an evening express to light the stove with earlier on.  Road up past the golf club looks like it could be fun in my truck.  Better not go out playing as was ordered to stay home today by work.

Yep, I am also stuck at home.

My car refuses to climb anything over a 1 in 10000000 slope if there is any sign of snow, the way it is reacting to the snow, it almost looks like it must be alergic to the stuff.

Almost cost me a new drivers door today,  I very nearly altered its appearance with my walking boot this morning after an hour trying to get up the hill to the village then on to Aberdeen.

I was very tempted to give it a good kicking.

Need to get better tyres sorted or narrower rims and narrower profile tyres.

Kev.

No not stuck, the joys of working from home :grin. Just fed up shovelling tonnes of the stuff every morning so we have room to park and turn two cars.  :z10

Herself made the journey to and from Aberdeen yesterday in her Golf with winter tyres no bother. Mind you she didn't have to go during the busy traffic period.

Be of good cheer, the snow is easing off today, but the cold looks like sticking with us for another week. :cry

Just went from Oldmeldrum to Pitmedden and it showed -17. Cleared the drive when I got home and it was really nice weather to be working in.  There is something nice about a really dry cold night, kinda reminds me of Canada.

Winter tyres are the way forward!

Been shovelling as well and agreed John its a nice night for a bit of manual labour. Few large mugs of mulled wine has helped as well :z4 :z18
Granted I am not travelling far on back roads but so far the allroad has been a trooper. 4 wheel drive and adjustable ride height has been proving excellent. Dont have winter tyres but no problems so far. Its gonna be sliiiiiiddddyyyy in the morning.

Same here Noel what temp does diesel go tits up at?

Ice on inside of letterbox in kitchen, front door handle frozen on inside, frost on walls in bathroom but all that is normal in my house in winter time.  What's not normal is the temperature in the main body of my cottage, had a new stove fitted in September, sat in shorts looking at the icicles outside my living room window.  Serious improvement over last year :grin

Looking forward to a skiddy trip to Altens tomorrow  :z6

Ben that looks a nightmare. Have you a plan to prevent that happening again? If not I suggest get a large tub of grease and paint a good coat all around the mating surfaces. Prob best find one that doesnt smell 2 bad! Agri suppliers or the like should have.
Title: Re: Anyone else Stuck?
Post by: Irvine Ross on 03/12/2010 at 17:30
Ben

Shouldn't be so bad tomorrow as the temperature is a tropical 0oC at the moment and it won't be so cold tonight.

I would give your door a good coat of WD40 around the edges and in the lock tonight if I were you. (if you haven't got WD40 then remember whisky doesn't freeze easily)

Cheers

Vaseline has lots of uses as well Ben  :oops :oops one of them as a grease, if you give the door frames a thin smear of vaseline it will save the door from freezing shut.  I would also go with Irvine's suggestion of WD40 in the lock as well.

Alternatively get Lessels to fit full central heating to your house!  :z10

PS Have the mice moved back in yet to keep you company in your toasty livingroom?  :z4
Title: Re: Anyone else Stuck?
Post by: Matt Henderson on 03/12/2010 at 19:00
My last car had a real problem with the lock freezing. I used to spray in WD40 but it would refreeze very easily. I switched to some bicycle oil and it worked much better.

After being confined to the house for a few days because of the road, I managed to get up the hill today.

What a great feeling to be able to go anywhere you like again, fantastic.

New rims and spare snow tyres will be sourced ASAP.

I should have bought that 4 x 4 that I saw for a great price in the spring, it was a bargain.

I hope this white stuff moves on sooner rather than later.

Now back to tying a few flies and attempting a step by step.

Hi Hamish

I am looking for 5 stud 17" rims to take 205 / 50 X 17" tyres.

The stupid fat low profile things are just crap in the snow without seriously aggressive tyres.

You will have sussed that I am not very impressed with the stupid B****y thing in the snow.  Rant over.

At least I got out today to help out a mate who also had car problems this morning.

Oh the joy of winter motoring.

Pleased you got moving Kev, did you let the tyres down to get up the hill?

Title: Re: Anyone else Stuck?
Post by: Kevin Muir on 04/12/2010 at 20:29
Hi John, I will have to measure the discs to check wwhat size rim I need to go over the disc and caliper.

How much smaller than 17 " can you nornally go.

I would be very happy to put 15" 70 profile snow tyres on when there is snow forecast.

I have a compressor, trolley jack and a impact wrench at home so it should only take a few minutes to swap them over.

Ben, some kind soul had put some salt on the road so it was much easier with standard tyre pressures this morning.  I still had to reverse back in Johnshaven on a very slight slope because some stupid git would not pull awauy from the junction in time making me pull on the handbrake, you guessed it, spinning wheels again :z8

If I can get away with smaller diameter, narrower rims and thinner tyres that will definately be the best way forward and cheaper as well, sounds like a plan.

At least I am mobile again which is something.

Kev.

If you can get 15" wheels with 196 65 15's on the car then you will find plenty 5 stud ones on ebay pretty cheap.

They will make a huge difference with winter grips on them.

Glad you are getting out and about though.

Thawing here a bit too.

Know what you mean about gritters.  Bugger all for days and now, stuck behind three on the way home.  Not sure what that is about, I heard on Thursday that Aberdeenshite Council were "rationing" grit and were waiting for more to arrive that was on a boat.  I think I remember them saying that they had more than enough for this winter.  Below about -7C gritting does not work but it has not been -7C or below the whole week, think this would probably be their excuse however.  Maybe there is good reaon for it but I'm baffled!!

Kev, I know I can't for smaller wheels to my truck, 15's will not fit, they'd catch the calipers on the front.

Kev - what the hell is it you're driving :? :! Should be something in the owners manual about possible alternate wheel size for your model, I went from 17" (215/45/17 - more like bloody rubber bands, not tyres :shock) on the Alfa to 15" but they are a squeeze only just clearing the brake calipers.

Matt - the Alfa has sadly spent as much time back at the dealers as it has in my hands since I bought it  :cry However, the few miles it has done with the 15" Gislaved snow tyres on were genuinely unbelievably good. I might even get a chance to try them again before the winter is out...... who knows  :z8 On the other hand, I might just get something else instead.....

No, they still just break down. Fiat Sedici otherwise known as a Suzuki SX4 in a party frock  :z7

I reckon it's gonna be some type of 4X4 people carrier type van thing ..... with a captain's seat :wink

Maybes aye, maybes no  :grin

Hi all
I´ll haven´t been on the forum for quite a while.
Here in Sweden we have winter in all parts of country, and in south it´s chaos on the roads with all snow and trains are stuck.

Nice Sandy..... nice  :wink

I might actually be stuck in for a bit of today...... we've had about 2.5 additional inches of snow last night on top of the icey stuff of the last few days and the roads have not been cleared as yet  :z10
I just watched a neighbour sliding their van into a gorse bush - all locked up and sliding along beautifully.

Mikes guess about the 'alternate' car I'm considering is close, but not right  :z7
Then again... I might be having another change of heart. Ho hum.

I'm not adverse to Japanese machinery - I even like Sushi - but I have a feeling that my 'Italian' chapter is finally coming to an end  :z6 Having already gone through my VW/Audi phase the only 'Axis' country worth continuing on to in motoring terms is Japan  :z4

I might be looking at something other than a Mitsubishi on Saturday which also comes from the land of the rising sun..... but in the meantime as I've given up waiting for anyone to work out what the hell type of Mitsubishi I've been talking about have a squint at this:
http://www.cars-directory.net/pictures/mitsubishi/rvr/pic_mitsubishi_rvr_5299.jpg

For those who like slightly weird stuff (like me) it appeals hugely, especially when you see this standard RVR Sportgear Turbo up against an American 'muscle' car:

http://www.youtube.com/v/P2QIzpexSIk?fs=1&

It appeals to my sense of humour hugely, for the geeks out there it's essentially a pseudo offroader/small people carrier hybrid with (in the case of the one that appeals to me) Mitsubishi Evo 4 running gear including the 2 litre turbo engine de-tuned to 230bhp.

PS - should I consider the men in white coats with some sort of strapped jacket friendly :?  :z7

Funny you should say that Mike, before buying the Alfa 'we' considered one of those (a WRX not an STi) new on a special deal Subaru had on pre-registered cars at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing - should have gone for it :roll

And oddly enough... what do you suppose it is I'm going to look at on Saturday :? :wink

I did but was a bit of a long way round.  Just drove straight through the Urie by Cemy this morning but was deeper than I thought.  Made it O.K but was not comfortable really so went long way round.  Still big but starting to come down now, biggest spate this year so far.

Fintray is goosed too when things get that bad, that road gets flooded too.  If I went via Dyce it would not be worth me going to work, I'd use more £ diesel than I'd earn in a day  :z4

I bet your sphincter was going like a rabbits nose when driving through the Ury Ben.  :z7

The snow must have took some fright for the river to come up like that.  I am still in Lanarkshire and it has shifted but not to that degree.  Was going to the Clyde for grayling today but the river is like chocolate milk.

I have only the odd inch of snow in shetered spots here John, Lecht road open again etc has thawed very quick.
Wasn't any flow where I was driving was just by the water works at back of Inverurie.  Wasn't fun though, I hate drving through stuff that deep.

Cheers
