Title: Outcasts 'highland fling' 2011.... read on!
Post by: Hamish Young on 12/11/2010 at 18:34
Right.... Mr B, Ben and I were chatting at the last 'Outcasts' event about the potential for a 'Highland Fling' in the same vein as the old 'grand days out' somewhere in the Highlands next season.

Possibly near Tomich.... but equally possible based from my place near Kiltarlity.
It all depends on numbers.....

The idea is just to have a fun 2-3 days (maybe four for some :?) enjoying each others company in some loch.... and maybe river  :wink ..... fishing in the Highlands. Few beers. Bit of fly-tying. Doubtless a casting shootout somewhere odd with something daft at an inappropriate time in the wee small hours.....

If you'd be interested in a forum 'outcasts' trip then I'll start looking into the practicalities.
Once we've got an idea of numbers I'll look at costings - we don't want it to break the bank :!

Time of year - it may have to be mid-May. Bit early for some waters, but I'm a greedy sod and I want to go.... June is out for me unless it's towards the end of the month when I turn *** ahem *** 40  :shock

NB - The poll may change from time to time as things start to work out.

PS - Posted in Outcasts as I reckon the folk who make it to Outcast gatherings are the most likely to participate  :wink

Yeah at last a poll, we need more of these. I have voted maybe.... Love the sound of it but my work situation for next year is all up in the air. This may mean having to move abroad (again)so cant plan for anything after feb at the moment :z10

I used to drown maggots and it is my bag.

Would be up for it but dates need to be firmed up as May (around 23rd) is when I go to the Lochy.

So maybe for me

Hi Hamish

Count me in.

I have a spare tube and a large roll of "Duct Tape" to make sure Ben can't wriggle his way out of the tube and bank fish the loch.

Should be a great weekend.

Dates - to suit. No point in making anything fixed as yet, oodles of time ahead.
My wedding anniversary (10 years - that decade went quick  :shock) at the beginning of June so mid-late June best for me - barring anything else cropping up.
But we have time to plan - which is nice  :wink

I am dreaming of some Loch style

Its a great book btw, anyone who fishes from a boat would love it. The guy has had some serious bags from the big Irish lough's and rightly appreciates them for what they are, trout heaven.

Oddly enough, it's on the list of possible 'venues'. That said, we have a reasonable amount of space here at the new pad.... so depending upon numbers...... and folks willingness to camp out in the garden.... and budgets.... our place is 'do-able'  and within striking range of all venues on the provisional list  :wink

Still a work in progress.......

My initial plan is to try and get some access to a spot of river water (for trout) along with some loch fishing, trust that suits everyone....... although I imagine Ben will not be happy unless his 'man vegetables' are chilled daily by the cool water of a highland river in pursuit of a leviathan trout - somewhere  :z4

Any particular requests for fishing  :?

Guys,

So I can get my head around this a wee bit better can anyone who plans on taking part in the 'Highland Fling 2011' reply with answers to the following :

1. Best month for you and best weekends to work around :?
2. Happy to camp, crash at my place (limited space) or sort out your own digs :?
3. River, loch or both :?
4. Would you consider postponing to early August......... :?

Just to keep the ball rolling on this, but some trout fishing may be coming my way which I can't tell you about yet but has got me all twitchy  :wink

I could do August ATM.  Whatever suits really May, most of June and July is out for me already.  Thinking about it August would be perfect, if we are going to plan for this could we nail dates soon so I can get it on the calender at work before Cpt Mannering decides he's going to go torturing the motorists of Britain in august with his Volvo / caravan combination?

OK - bit of PM work and we have a date for the weekend of 6th & 7th of August, suggest gather on the 5th.
Bedroom space is all booked guys.
I could put my 'man sized' tent up in the garden to save anyone bringing theirs, that has two bedrooms in it.
There's even an airbed for one of the tent bedrooms.
Rachel has decided she's going to stay up for that weekend, so everyone on their best behaviour or my nuts will be turned into something unpleasant with a blunt knife  :shock

Cool

Provisional list of those hoping to make it to the inaugural Highland Fling:

Mike
Ben
Sandy (& maybe Daniel)
Jim
Kevin
Peter
Allan
Irvine
Iain
Noel
Kev
Steven
John
Me :!

Now that's probably enough and more than we managed at Lintrathen a couple of seasons back. However, just because your name is on the list doesn't mean you have to come along. Let's face it August is a wee way off yet :!
I will not be offended if folk don't want to camp in the garden and source alternate digs but I do plan on having a BBQ on the Friday evening with a few choice 'mild ales' and it would be nice to think we could get everyone together for that.
Ben can stay sober and drive, after all his bus car is big enough to carry everyone and the contents of a small but well stocked fishing shop :z7

Ach you've no sense of adventure John, Hamish is famed for his barbequed sprouts and pickled onions.  we could add a few roll mop herrings and Guinness's.  Should at least keep the midges away? :grin

That time of year should be good for the dry sedges on the lochs, and possibly even late mayflees if we pick the right waters.

John - I'd have thought the quickest way up is for you to head up to Fort William and come up that way :z17 or maybe catch a train and get picked up in Inverness :?

Midgies I can deal with.... it's those bastarding clegs that do me in :z10
That suggested diet means you shouldn't have any propulsion issues in a float tube Allan  :z7

Good shout Hamish.  Fort William will be the best option and I will bring the car as I don't fancy lugging all my stuff up on the train.

I hate clegs as well and i really don't care for midgies either but 'skin so soft' works for me.

Really looking forward to chasing the troots again this year

Right......
Time for an update which is long overdue.
It seems our wee gathering clashes with the Belladrum music festival. I know this as I had promised Rachel we would go this year and am now trying to earn major brownie points / earning forgiveness as I'll be fishing instead. This festival running means it will be busy everywhere and alternate camping grounds might be limited.

So, let's revisit the list and see who is coming and who is not so I can get things finalised at my end.
At the last count for the inaugural Highland Fling we provisionally had:

Mike B
Ben D
Sandy (& maybe Daniel)
Jim
Kevin Muir
Peter
Irvine
Iain
Noel
John

That's 14 by my count including me so I really can't open it up to any more folks staying at our gaff, sorry  :z10
With my 'man tent' up in the garden there is possibly room for three more smaller tents. Although less than ideal I do have space in the steading for anyone who doesn't have a tent and doesn't mind roughing it a smidgen.
Mike, Sandy, Daniel and Ben have 'dibs' on the inside rooms in the house as they got in there first :wink
Providing no-one parks like an arse then there's room for 5 or 6 cars around the house. It would be better yet if we indulged in some car-sharing.

So, can I ask all on the list to say 100% yes or no ASAP please. That'll allow me to work things out at my end.
I'll be block booking some fishing, so please PM me with what you'd like to do. I do have a plan, but what suits me might not suit all.

Nearer the time, I'll ping PMs to those attending with directions...... hint - don't follow Ben  :z7

H  :z3

PS - Those in bold are confirmed.
PPS - Those in italics are a maybe.

Hamish

That's  YES for me and I have my own wee tent. Any kind of fishing that doesn't involve a float tube will be fine.

As I will be starting from Dinnet and going over the Lecht I am a bit out on a limb for car sharing.

Well, the man-sized tent was put up yesterday evening and survived the rain and wind.... which has all eased off.
If I could have then today would have been a great day for fishing, warm, overcast and 'fishy' Fingers crossed it will be the same for the next few days.......
Handily, I can hear the Belladrum 'Tartan Heart' getting going from the decking outside the house. Sure I heard Deacon Blue getting warmed up earlier, so all good - free (albeit long distance) entertainment for this evening. If not, I'm sure I have some aka SKA stuff kicking around which will do the job nicely

Food prep just about completed for tonights BBQ, just hope everyone turns up before I'm tempted to eat it all  :z7

Shame not everyone originally on the list could make it, but if this one goes well (and I hope it does :!) I'm sure there'll be another.

oh, and aka-SKA will be back at this year's Wizard festival on 26/27 august (http://www.wizardfestival.com/) though we don't know yet which day or stage.

Thanks for a grand weekend Mr & Mrs "H" :z16

That has to rank as one of the bonniest lochs that I have fished ..... the fishing was hard, the midgies were evil, but the scenery was absolutely stunning!

Irvine and I shared a spooky boat, which actually 'drifted' backwards against the wind when you had the drogue out ....... a strange experience :z4

Thanks again!
Best wishes
Mike

I echo Mike's sentiments.

A huge thanks to Hamish and Rachel for being wonderful hosts.  Hamish could well be the next Gordon Ramsay!  :z14

I had a great day tubing on a lovely loch, even caught fish! I must say that the midgies are the worst I have ever experienced when trying to pack up back at the car.  I have been well and truly chomped and am sitting here scratching my hands and arms as I type.

Had a great weekend with great company.  Thank you very much folks.  :z16

I have also spied some lovely lochs on the way down the A82 today which has given me some ideas for the near future.  :z17

Yes indeed many thanks to Hamish and Rachel for being great hosts and making us all welcome.

I finally managed to fish a loch that that has been high on my wish list for a long time and had a super day in the boat with Mr B.

Good company and a great weekend :z16

Thanks to all who came up, shame the weather was so crap on the Sunday.
No pun intended but it put a real 'dampener' on things - I was gutted the weather was so shit :z10
Bit pissed off about the 'let down' over the river fishing which had been arranged, that particular beat has had its card marked and I do hold a grudge.

I hope someone has taken some pics of the Saturday adventures :!
A big thank you for all the goodies that have been left - Rachel and I will be drinking beer for some time  :wink

I'm already thinking ahead to next year and having done a 'recce' trip with Ben, Kevin and Rachel late on Sunday I have come up with a cunning plan (which does not require turnips) which will open up considerably more water to those who fancy it the next time we have the 'Highland Fling'  :grin

What a great weekend, the loch on the Saturday looked perfect, the trout played hard to get and spoiled the party, tough fishing but a great day out.  I have never been that far up the glen before, so it was a new venue for me.  Leaking waders and the worst midges ever were the low point, I am sure they sucked about half a pint of blood out of me before I got changed at the end of the day.

Such a shame the rain on Sunday stopped play, the scouting party trip in the late afternoon was interesting, lots of options for other lochs in the future.

The Beauly was interesting on the Monday, fly fishing with 15 foot dapping (sorry Salmon) rods was interesting to say the least, I almost managed to catch a glimpse of the very very long learning curve leading out in front of me.  I must get one of those interesting rods to play with some time soon.  I never saw the fun in Spey casting just for the sake of it before, I got a very brief glimpse of this on the Monday, albeit very very briefly (watching Hamish and Ben).  Very challenging and such a steep learning curve, thanks to Hamish and Ben (I think).  Watching Hamish and Ben make it look far too easy was depressing to say the least.

We all managed to touch fish so a great day out and a different pair of leaking waders to fix.

A special mention to the both Hamish and Rachel for being such great hosts for the weekend, thanks for a great weekend.

Kev.

Top weekend, thanks to Mr & Mrs H for putting everyone up.

Fished (cast into) the Alness on Saturday which was fun, nice place to be and would have been even better with some fish about, a few pics in the fishing reports section.  Hopefully someone has some pics from the loch on Saturday.

Few from Saturday night which just happened to be Mr Barrios birthday evening

Mike tries to force a smile as he cuts into the first of his two birthday cakes, I hear he doesn't really do birthdays  :z4

You will eat the cake

John & Noel plan the following days poaching operations, there was a plan before it rained on Sunday and everyone turned into fair weather anglers  :z7

Shame about the awful weather on Sunday, was looking forward to getting out on a loch.

Monday was good fun, fished the Beauly Association water with Kevin & Hamish.  Nice water and good to see Kevin out with the salmon rod, at times he actually looked quite excited by it.

Kev fishing not far away from the spot where the Aigas Dam tried to kill him later on in the day, I wish I had pics of that but I was more concerned about having to jump in and pull you out than locating the camera mate  :z4  You should get some credit for getting into the water that was, from the bank, very obviously far too quick to stand in safely and then going on to make a few casts whilst almost getting swept away so as not to loose face (bloody loch fishers are a liability on proper water)  :z4 :z4  Respect for that, I think  ???

Lunchtime in between the showers not long after H dropped the only salmon that was encountered that day

Kev Starting to get to grips with th DHD, you were throwing some nice lines by the end of the day and almost looking comfortable by lunchtime.  Cracking water for the price, considering joining the club next season.

The excitement of salmon fishing became too much for Kev either that or he got scared when he nearly went for a swim, whatever, he pissed himself so we unfortunately had to cut the day short without success.
