Nice work Iain, my old man had good success with damsels at Haddo the other week. I didn't have the same success with my self tied ones. There seemed to be a few differences one being a much longer tail (at least double the body length) and two was a little bit of crystal flash over the top of the thorax type area and a few tail ends of the crystal flash left sticking up behind the thorax area. I'll get round to making an example one day soon.
-
Matt,
That was the reason I tied them - as they seemed to be doing well at Haddo - they're a ltlle but gaudier than I 'd usually tie but nice to look at, a bit like myself :oops

HI ,
Hurrah! at long last I,ve got my new camera so I,m just having a play with it .
Here's a couple of pics just taken hand held nothing fancy.

Both flies tied with BM Nymph size 10 hooks using Trout Bum Crystal Hackle (a long fibred fritz) and Angel Hair.
The first one is a bit over exposed it's actually supposed to be Fluo orange. RTFM I think !
Paul.

Nice flies lads, thats a cracking photo iain :z16
You ever tried using say a 1lb piece of fluro as a counter rib just to strengthen up the rib as i dont think it will take much for the fish to wreck the fly, nice tying anyway :z18
-
Hi Iain,
Och ! There is always one eh ?
:z4
Paul :wink

No Baz, I haven't and don't want to bulk up the body any - I could drop a coat of varnish prior to wrapping but this fly WAS designed for one fish only but boy what a fish! :z7
Anyway, haven't you got a muster to go to? :z4

if not a muster than it must be time time for the safety meeting. :z4

Hi Baz,
You off that bloody rig yet ? How do you fancy Rescobie this week ?
Paul.

I was making up a few tubes for a trip to the Don last Friday. I started with a castle shrimp tied on plastic tubing with a plastic turbo cone and a tungsten conehead.
then made a few variaitions
(http://i39.tinypic.com/2425qo8.jpg)
and a wee simple green and black tube.
The Blue and Black combination worked the best. Given that it contacted a salmon and had a trout too.
Cheers
Matt

HI Matt,
Nice ties. I'd be a bit wary of having the point of your needle sticking out as in the last photo though.
Been there done that.
On a lighter note what colour combinations do you prefer for Don springers ?
Paul.

I hadn't noticed that to be honest Paul. I'll be more vigilant in the future!
I'm afraid none of the Don Springers have abliged yet so I'll let you know what the prefer once I have one in the net...

nice flies as usual Mattheus. :z16
A touch of JC might be nice though

Just asking brenda :wink
Muster was yesterday and i cant be bothered buying the bond so no saftey meetings either!
6 frames of snooker everyday and 2 3 course meals and tying flies is now starting to get a bit boring :z6
And still no flights :mad
-
Hi Baz,
Sorry to hear that . Oh well , I,m needing 12 size 14 Olive klinks, 12 size 16 BWO Duns ,(prefer these tied on klink hooks), 12 size 14 greenwell spiders , 12 ............ ,

Paul.
PS: I hear the second volcano is now rumbling ............. :wink

Looking at surface stuff for the float tube gathering, anyone ever tried the parasol style?
Iain

I have done ok on those type of patterns Iain, i used foam instead of that material you have used! I presume that is aero wing???
I used gut also and fed it through a piece of foam then burnt the end of the foam with the lighter which melted the gut and bonded the materials together!
Very affective for swirling troot and its a good way of keeping the flies in the zone, i have them in a range of bits of gut up to 6"!
Nice tying :z16

Iain
very nice Irene. I'm waiting for my aero-wing to arrive in the post today...
-
Hi Iain,
Parasol fly , you must be expecting rain eh ? :z4 I tie these with a foam ball wrapped in a bit of mesh , never thought of Aerowing , Uh Duh . Also like to leave the fly as streamlined as poss. for easy sinking . Once you get into thinking sideways about these things you will be inventing all sorts.
Hows about a comp. for the most innovative /silliest idea Mike ? Could be fun.
I,ve even seen a dry fly tied with a bit of bubble wrap ,including the bubble by the way . It caught a fish !
Here is something I threw together tonight ,a rough Olive, aye a very rough Olive :wink

Hello there Baz,
The buzzers have caught, the emerger has been shortlisted for the tippet on a few occasions but never made it & the nymph is for clear skinny water (haven't seen any yet).
What you tying?

What is the material that you have used for the wing?
Nice work Iain what size is the hook for that nymph?
I'd need binoculars to tie that one...
