I've just been reading the TV guide for the festive period.
And on the 2nd of January a new programme called Nick Hancock's angling school starts at 7-30pm on ITV.It looks like it'll be in 10 parts and will involve Mr Hancock( they think its all over) educating several wannabee anglers in the fine arts in gods country.
Hopefully it'll good as it has a prime time slot and a half decent presenter.
Sandy
-
Good news, here's hoping it lasts longer than a ha ha half hour
-
It'll be OK as long as he doesn't spend all his time going on about some big fish he caught in 1966
-
.... with three lions on his shirt :?:
-
That sounds cool
Best wishes
Mike
-
This was advertised as starting tonight in my TV magazine ...... but it didn't come on and I remembered to tune in as well :z6
I did a bit of digging and it looks like it is actually starting next week
See http://www.stv.tv/content/tv/TV_Miscellaneous/fishingschool/index.html
Cheers
Mike
-
i was also looking forward to it to and at 7 was told that in a change to the planned programme we were getting a full hour of emmerdale aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh was what came to mind
will look forward too it next week
vinnie jones is preditor fly fishing in mongolia for wolf fish (timan) on sky travel just now so that makes up for it
andrew
ps he gave up on the fly after days and used a rat like lure on a spinning rod and got a 25lber on 6lb line that he lander 2 miles down the bank 40 mins later
-
Dam!! i missed it. when's it on next?
Jay
-
It starts next week Jay
-
Ok on Tuesday at 7:30?
-
Just checked the sky planner it looks REALLY good, a lot better than trout and about :z4
Jay
-
Don't forget folks ................. It is on tonight at 7.30pm on STV :z13
At least it is advertised to be on then
Best wishes
Mike
-
Thanks Mike, thats might fine timing as it's 19:26
-
I've got two words for it..
Extremely Brilliant!!
Great show really really enjoyed it and can't wait till next week's!
A lot better than trout and about.
Jay
-
Jay
I thought it was not a bad start , room for improvement though. but miles better than Trout and About.
:z18
Jim
-
I reckoned it was extremely brave, to put a flyfishing lesson on prime time TV. Well Done.
I thought they dealt with it pretty well for the layman.
Well presented in gorgeous scenery.
However:shock:
NO GLASSES!!!!!! except for one guy and the 3 with glasses on their head (no much bloody use there  )
If we are to educate people properly then glasses are paramount.
Apart from that and Mr Hancock's dry hand and barbed hook!!!
I thought it was very good.Hopefully it will maintain the quality, and perhaps a few more folk will fancy giving it a go.
Again Well done :z16
Sandy
-
Well, he did have his glasses on until Nick Hancock told him to take it off and stop looking like a poser :z4 but not that i can comment about glasses, but i do have somewhere.
Jay
-
Yup, Glasses were a real howler, particularly for novices.
Overall though it looks like a well thought out series, hope it continues like this.
-
Mixed thoughts from me to tell the truth....
Felt sorry for the chap who caught the brownie...poor sod did not even get a chance to see the thing before Hancock released it back.
Not sure they have the right presenter for this...i know they have chosen him as he is recognised from They Think its all Over etc etc..but all the same, I don't think he has the correct attitude to present something like this..bit of a bully I think.
Also felt that they did not talk enough about tackle and costs. Ok, it may have not been shown due to programme constraints, but I would have thought it was inportant to tell the audience, some of which might be wanting to get into fly fishing, what they were using, why, and how much it would cost.
But I did like the fact that there were 2 new Discos and 2 new 110 landrovers to oogle over..
-
Sad Bugger
-
Hi folks
I enjoyed watching this very much and thought it was great :z16 am looking forward to seeing the next one soon :z12
Great stuff
Mike
-
Overall, definitely a positive step IMHO.
Did you see the enthusiasm oozing out the pores of most of the "students". I can't wait to see them progress.
And what a setting to start them on their journey - magnificent.
Only minor negative in my opinion was the dry hands handling of the trout (but forgivable due to the excitement of the first catch and returning it to the water extremely quickly - I'm sure we've all done the same at some time).
Well done to Mr H for introducing it in the pissing rain and saying he enjoyed the weather.
-
I thought it was a great programme but i think they could have chosen a better presenter to be quite honest. I didn't think Hancock did as well as i expected, the dry hands was one of the main points but i've noticed matt hayes doesn't do it oh so often either. The glasses i should wear glasses and allways need a gentle reminding but to people new to the sport and are just trying to pick it up as they go along it could pose a problem, there wasn't a lot of information about the tackle length of nylon, what to look for in a rod ect ect.. but i recon next week may be a wee bitty better.
Jay
-
I picked up on a couple of things as well
Yes, of course, there will always be one or two things that we would have done differently .......... but if I personally were to make a TV programme, I'm sure that others would find things that they felt I should or shouldn't have done too
It is just grand to see some fishing on the telly and I got the impression that this one is going to be interesting to follow
Best wishes
Mike
-
Mike
I suppose you have a point, but remember its on a prime time TV slot, so all these things should have been thought about before.Especially as Jon Beer was involved, i love his articles and he adds a real "proper fishing" angle to the programme. They might of course get it right next week, but as i said originally i take my hat of to them for making an difficult subject very watchable. And as old 3 spines says Enthusiasm is everything, especially for the viewer.
Sandy
-
Thought the programme was pretty good and like jay said maybe more info on setting up ur leader and cast would be good but all in all for the first episode it was better than i expected with Mr hancock presenting and it will probably get better as it goes along.Plus now its on council telly i can watch it upstairs and the wife not pee'd off with me hogging the Sky.Rob said he was not sure he liked the presenter so who would he have picked?I quite liked Botham when he did Botham on the fly on discovery channel, what is everyone elses thoughts on a presenter then?
-
Thought Nick Hanncock did OK , he was not as annoyong as i thought he might be.
:z18
Jim
-
It got off to an "OK" start IMHO - looking forward to the next episode. I like the fact that it was filmed in the highlands and not somewhere more manicured or a specimen pond somewhere in darkest England-shire :z3
This bodes well for future episodes
-
Thought they did well and the enthusiasm was spot on.
-
Rob said he was not sure he liked the presenter so who would he have picked?
Melinda Messenger..no doubt about it...lol
Seriously..I like Nick Hancock, but I just felt he was a bit too bullish. If he was a first class fly fisher, then fair enough..but he is not any better..and in some cases worse than many of the folk on this website.
To talk authoritatively on a subject you really need to be pretty knowledgable (imo that is  )..so someone like Charles Jardine, Peter Cockwill, even Bob Church maybe..orrr..since it was fishing in the Highlands..Bruce Sandison...
Still..did a better job that I ever could have :)
-
Don't forget ( like I usually do ) it is on the telly again on STV at 7.30 tonight :z16
Best wishes
Mike
-
Much better.
I really enjoyed this one.And they remembered the specs (most of the time)
Sandy
-
Saw this post to late, missed it. was it any good ?
Cheers
Jim
-
Yes, I enjoyed it too, a bit like going along the learning curve with the anglers ......... great stuff
Mike
:z2
-
Very good show, but it seemed to pass so quickly  , overall very well done this week, and they also showed you how to do a dropper, very handy.
Jay
-
Yep, I enjoyed it too. I'm especially looking forward to next week when they're on the river.
-
I think this is one of the best programs so far - 400% better than trout and about . I am looking forward to the rest of the series the trainees are doing well I just wish they would try different flys when they are not catching instead of perservering with the same one but I am sure they will twig it in the end.
The program seems too short simply because it is interesting and the scenery and solitude is stunning it is a refreshing change.
:z4
Ian
-
Enjoying the show but still cant get my head round why they had to choose Nick to do the show. Might of been more enjoyable if the presenter was a decent fisher and had some tricks we could learn from him.
Iam offshore just now so iam allowed a moan
-
Ach,missed it. :z6
Shame it's not repeated.
Is it?
-
Hmmm!
"Always wet your hands before handling a live fish that's to be retuned" says the ghillie in one boat, quite rightly.
Ten seconds later the ghillie in the other boat unhooks a trout and hands it to the angler who has not wet his hands.
The ghillies wear self inflating life jackets in the boats, the anglers wear none. And they are fishing catch and release but, by the look of the time it takes to unhook a fish, they have not flattened the barb.
Bit of inconsistency there. Hope it gets better.
Irvine
-
Missed the first program but managed to catch last nights one. Certainly double standards with the handling of the fish! Still it's better than trout and about!!!!
-
Irvine
I thought it was the ghillies who weren't wearing life jackets (no specs either).
I would have thought the "stars" would have to for insurance purposes.
Still it wasn't bad
Sandy
-
I think the programme is great fun, it's a bit like going along with these folk on their adventure. I find this far more interesting to watch than a "how to" or a "trophy location" type set up.

Sandy
-
Hi wendy welcome to the forum, really enjoying the show takes me back when i was learning my son andrew. Now he loves the sport.
Henry and andrew thewaterbouys
-
Bet you don't get too much scenery like that coarse fishing Wendy. Your keenness is obvious from the show so far
-
welcome to the forum wendy.
looks like u enjoyed scotland :z15
hope u keep the flyfishing up and come back sometime.
-
It was the most beautiful place i have ever visited in my life!
I'm glad my keeness came over ok because if i could i would go fishing everyday!
No i never see scenery like that in Course fishing never!
I have recently started to fish for predators and i'm loving it. I smashed my personal best twice last weekend i had a lovely 2lb12oz PERCH and a 16lb 9oz PIKE it was awesome!!!! Can i put pics up on here to show you them? I know most of you love the fly fishing and i too did. But i would like to show you these...

-
Cracking fish.
Good photos too.Great to have you on board for a little extra variety.
Rob has some competition
Have you tried the Fly for the Pike and perch?
Sandy
-
Hi Wendy, that's a couple of nice fish you have. there are a few of us up here with a coarse fishing background. did both fish come from the canal?
Where abouts are you fishing most of my coarse fishing was on the Trent, Dove and Trent and Mersey canal around the Derby area.
I still have my coarse gear and it usually gets an outing once a year I must admit though I now have a preference for fly fishing. As spiderman says you should try fly fishing for predators and other coarse fish.
-
Hi Wendy
I am enjoying the programme , that is a couple of impressive fish , well done.
:z18
Jim
-
yes i got them both from the canal in the same day! it was excellent
I fish all over the place, yesterday i drove from manchester to Aldershot to fish at Gold Valley Lakes it was a very difficult day's fishing but i still enjoyed every minute.
i entered a raffle whilst i was there and won myself..... a FLY ROD!!! i was very impressed. so i will now try to catch predators on the fly i will get myself a fly tying kit with some instructions i think. It will certainly be a new challenge for me. :z4
-
Hey Wendy,
Catching fish on your own flies is a really buzz and it's not THAT difficult to tie as long as you get physical instruction on the basics and not from a book , it's not quite the same.I love the flyfishing ideals and would love to fish for other species other than trout , maybe one days i'll venture to the coast for some pollock or coalies.
-
Derek we learnt to tie a fly on the programme but only once it looked very easy we made a daddy long leg... well i got to make the legs hahah.
and yes i'd bet it is a buzz catching on your own fly!
But i'd need a book to know what the flies look like in the first place
-
Wendy ,
Anybody who has tied a daddy long-legs knows that doing those  legs are the most fiddley and time consuming part of the whole pattern. If you ever do it again i recommend you try the Foam Daddy version as it floats alot better and has a more realistic silohette.
-
Wendy
Go for it and try tying your own flies. I'm self taught starting off with simple patterns from articles on the internet like Spiderman's :z14 spider patterns http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=93
I also got myself the book "Fly Tying for Beginners" by Peter Gathercole which I found very useful.
But, the best idea is to go to a demonstration or class. I went to a demonstration a couple of weeks ago and learned more in 3 hours of watching and chatting than I did bodging away on my own for the last 2 years.
Catching a trout on a self tied fly adds something extra to the experience. But watch out - it's damned addictive :z4
-
Well how funny was that tonight
-
Hi Wendy.
Had to go out tonight so missed it, but my sons recorded it for me and I hope to be able to watch it soon, real soon.
Best wishes
Mike
-
Bloody typical - the presenter gets the 'fish' :z6
Quality though - quality
-
I was embarresed with it
What they didn't show was that the other guys didn't want to swap over and let us fish the River so i sneaked away and found it  i also caught 4 fish in that River but it only showed me getting the one that "came to mama" hahahaha
-
oh i almost forgot here is the link incase anyone missed it
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=8962106545017153392

Hello Wendy.
If you ever visit the NE of Scotland, give me a shout and the lads and I will take you coarse fishing in some of the most amazing scenary you can imagine for some of the biggest Pike and Perch you will ever see
Thats a cracking Perch by the way, especially from a canal. I was brought up fishing the rivers, canals and pits around east london and Essex and a fish of that size would have been a rare beast indeed.
As for fly fishing for Pike, you should try it. A canal is the perfect place to start out as many of the fish lay under nearside bushes etc so no long casts. Also, because they dont tend to gro so big an 8 weight rod is fine. If you are fishing for Pike that grow big, then really you should be using 10 weight gear to get them in quick.
Perch on the fly is great fun too and that can be done with standard trout gear, a sinking line and fish shaped/coloured flies upto about 4 inches long.
Anyway, I am sure if you headed up this way you would be made very welcome by these baby eating Scots
Regards
Rob
-
nice one wendy, loved the dive :z4
did they let u keep all the gear u were using or did u have to buy it before u went? just curious.
brian.
-
Rob thanks for the offer i'll bear that in mind
We got to keep the clothing and waders but never got to keep a rod reel or any flies it would have been nice to have been given a fly tying kit or something but nope just the clothing...
I really must get out fly fishing again soon i really did enjoy ya know it was so much fun! I think i will go get some flies this weekend and have a go.
-
Wow! nice fish wendy, love the show, i missed it on Tuesday but i watched it on the link you sent, thanks a lot great show.
Jay
-
I've just watched too, still good.
Amused by the "not as coloured as I thought" comment.
Nice reels
Sandy
-
Hi folks
I watched my recording this evening too, still great stuff and I enjoyed it like the previous ones. Beautiful place to fish
Wendy
Yes, nice side stumble, quite normal wading practice that ........ I've done it myself sooooo many times and got an awful lot wetter than you did :z4
In fact I fall in on far too regular a basis for my liking  The last cracker was when I went to release a fish from the bank at the fishery with 10 new anglers in front of me in the boats .......... I kneeled on some grass that had no bank under it and proceeded to roll in head first with legs and arms going in all directions. Right under the water, let go of the fish and then stood up with my waders "ballooning full of water! Must confess I thought it was just as funny as my customers did :z4 :z4 :z4
Best wishes
Mike Barrio
-
Mike,
Can you do it again for those of us that missed it!!..lol
-
"In fact I fall in on far too regular a basis for my liking "
I seem to remember you telling me that you did something similar in a float tube, Mike -ever thought of writing a book about your mishaps! Hope to see you in the not too distant future (weather permitting).
All the best
Peter
-
Hi Peter
Yes, but it is easier to fall off the bank than it is out of a float tube ....... I guess I'm kind of a falling in expert :z4
The grass one was really funny, because as soon as I kneeled on it I realised that there was nothing under the grass and from then on everything seemed to go in slow motion :z4
Cheers
Mike
-
hi
wendy watched it on the link up, look like you all were having a great time it is a pitty they didn`t let you keep the rod and the reel at the end.
henry and andrew
the water buoys
-
Speaking of float tubes wait till you see me in mine
i am not gonna spoil it but you must watch it!!!
oooh i have a pic at the side of my name now thank you i presume Mike
Aww someone of the other forum i go on has sent me some flies today in a little box they are lovely and i can't wait to put them to use!

andrew
-
hahahah it was great fun... well it would've been
And that cramp in the legs is not good for you
-
I enjoyed the programme again this evening, they certainly took you to some cracking locations Wendy
Any thoughts about travelling up and trying it again for yourself?
Best wishes
Mike Barrio
-
Mike i'd love to do it all again it was a dream for me...and watching it all again brought it home... Today i have wrote a letter to Mac i found his address in all the things i kept from Scotland even some of the heather which my fly was in more than the water
I was disappointed tonight they didn't show me catching all the fish i had.... and i really did think a ghillie was a rod
-
Hi Wendy
enjoyed the beginning but some one around and i missed most of it, do you have a link for this weeks one by any chance :?: saw the gillie rod bit which raised a bit of a laugh in our house
Andrew
-
the guy that does them is working tonight i think, so hopefully i can get it for tomorrow andrew and yes i was laughing and hoping they would edit that part
-
thanks Wendy
-
Brought back memories for me - my Dad took me up there (Scourie) when I was 12 for a fishing holiday which sadly lasted just 2 days (my Grandad passed away  ). The scenery did it for me, and I try to get back up to that part of the world in my current job as often as possible... which reminds me, I have an invite for a river and loch featured in a recent fishing programme - time to call it in :!:
Nice programme tonight, bit thin, but nice
-
they don't seem to show half of what was recorded i thought they may show us learning how to put the flies on and showing us making droppers because to be honest if you are a non angler then you still wouldn't have a clue!
-
they don't seem to show half of what was recorded i thought they may show us learning how to put the flies on and showing us making droppers because to be honest if you are a non angler then you still wouldn't have a clue!
I guess you'll just have to start up "Wendy's Fly Fishing School" and fill in the gaps :!:
I'm curious Wendy ( since you hadn't any fly gear before the series and you didn't get to take your kit home at the end ) Have you now bought your own fly fishing outfit?
Best wishes
Mike Barrio
-
No mike    but last week i went on a fish -in with a forum i use regulary and we did a raffle for charity and there was a fly fishing rod and i won it!!!!
So once i have a nice reel and all the necessities i shall be out there. A friend of mine sent me a few flies which he's made himself and he is gonna take me to a lovely place called press manor... i really can't wait to get back out fly fishing i can't stress to people how much fun it really is!
and when i have my own fishing series like the coarse anglers of the world.... i shall i have the best fly rod and reel ever  with my name on it!!!
-
Excellent programme last night. Well done Wendy. Looks like it was a fair hike up the hill to get there!
I managed to watch the second and third shows from the hyperlinks. Do you have a link for the first show as I missed it.

Awwwwwwwe
Have to confess had a good laugh tonight
Great show, must sympathise Wendy though, Cramp is my bugbear when in the tube.
How did you find it?
I love fishing from the tube even if the sight of me pirroetting around with the flippers in the air every so often, is ridiculous.
All good fun
Sandy
-
Leaking waders can't have helped
Nice to see some fly tying being done
-
Yeah!
Leaky waders seem to have been a feature of lots of peoples 2006
never mind i least we learned the secret about painting your toes to catch fish, i guess thats why Hamish always keeps his boots on.
:z4 :z4
-
.... i guess thats why Hamish always keeps his boots on. :z4 :z4
No... that's to keep the smell in
I stopped applying varish to my toe nails when my girth 'matured' a little :z4 :z9
-
I really enjoyed tonights show one of the best so far and nice to see people wetting their hands before handling the fish. Can anyone tell me, what was the stuff thay used for tying the daddy long legs body?
Thanks, Jay
-
Raffia (which they used for the body on the daddy) is a relatively soft but hard wearing natural fibre commonly used in various crafts including basket and mat making
Raffia was quite commonly used in the 'revolution' of imitative stillwater fly tying of the late '70s (sinfoils fry fly for example). Plain raffia fibres can be commonly found in good garden centres but for fly tying it comes in loads of colours but is pretty unfashionable these days - synthetics have taken over
-
Yes, great stuff once again :z16
Best wishes
Mike
:z2
-
hahahaha glad you all had a good laugh!! I was wet up to my chest and they thought i was telling lies!
I get knocked down but i get up again and again and again!!!!!
I loved the float tube for getting to places that you would never get to from the bank.
-
Has anyone noticed when Nick is playing a fish his tongue goes mad licking his lips it's almost as if he can taste it cooked. The only side effect I get when fighting Mikes hard fighting fish is a bloody sore arm and an increased heartrate.
I thought it was a bit cruel for them not to give wendy a tow back to the shore especially later on when she wrung out her socks  i hope they bought her a "wee doch an doris afore she ganged awa"
cheers,
ian
-
they did look after me when they got me to the jeeps, they wrapped me up and gave me lots of hot drinks!
here's the link to Tues show incase you missed it.
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=3208434528779261044
-
Anyone have any ideas where the link for last night show is or is the programme finished now.
Thanks.
-
I guess because the footie was on it seams to have be postponed but it's on next week according the my sky menu
-
Guys i think there is 4 series left, i'm not sure, it's a 10 week programme.
-
Did anybody see it this week? Where were they fishing? ........ I missed it I'm afraid
Best wishes
Mike
-
I 'caught' it :z4
The party split up and 2 went hill loch fishing proper with Jon and the others on more accesible lochs - brought back memories of the Scourie hill lochs when me and my father fished there some 25 years ago  Jings, I must be getting old :z6
To be honest whilst it was nice enough to watch it was a slightly dull episode although seeing Jon and chums making a brew with a Kelly Kettle was interesting.
I think they're off to a stocked fishery in the next episode.

Superscot (Colin) from the wild fishing forum put it on line. You can view it at :

As the football was on ITV last night 'Fishing School is returns on Monday 12th at 8 o'clock.

I don't know ...... what a "funny" day I've had today :z8
All sorts of stuff went wrong and that includes a fair bit of website down time this evening
Luckily I have Mrs B to look after me and she noticed that the Fishing School was on the telly tonight instead of tomorrow ...... so I didn't miss it
The "pupils" travelled down to Tarvie Loch near Inverness for some rainbow fishing and seemed to enjoy themselves in the boats ........ didn't see Wendy catch anything though :z7
Must have felt a bit different pushing out cat's whiskers instead of the "proper flies" that they had been using so far in the series. They coped well though and most were rewarded with fish. They also had a go with sink tip lines which probably felt "interesting" after the floaters.
Enjoyed the show
Best wishes
Mike
PS: I just noticed that Derek had spotted the change to Monday in his post above.

Well, great programme tonight, I really enjoyed it and found myself wanting to be there.
Nice to see Wendy catching a fish and finding out that she likes running water

Chaps,
Here is a link to this weeks prog. Generously provided by "Superscot" on the wild fishing forum. I don’t think that Colin will have posted it on the Fish and Fly forum as he normally does, because of the shit he got from one ignoramus.

Have not been too enamoured with this series I have to say, but this weeks prog. was very good. You can tell that the party who hiked into the hills enjoyed the experience and, cliches aside, surely that is what it is all about.

Hi Fred
Thanks for the link and thanks to "Scotfly"

Hi folks
Well .......... I saw most of the series and I have enjoyed watching it :z16
Some weeks were perhaps better than others, but wasn't it just grand to see some fly fishing on the tv.

Hi guys sorry not posted for a while i have been extremly busy catching fish   I was also busy at the NEC on a fishing simulator!
I've been doing a challenge i set for myslef at the beginning of the year, and that challenge is to catch 8 specimen fish. I have achieved 4 of them up to now in the Rivers and canals. this month (next wed's TCF magazine) i have won Angler of the month and £300 worth of tackle!
I've also been asked to write for a brand new Angling magazine called Northern Angling Today, so i was busy writing my first article for that., which comes out in May.Then i have been on Talksport radio with Keith Arthur yesterday, and finally i have been asked to be the lady representative of NUBA (National Union British Anglers) So guys all in all i have been pretty hetic!
