Title: Loch Saugh
Post by: Iain Goolager on 17/07/2009 at 19:32
Fished there yesterday evening for the first time in years. Unfortunately there is no float tubing and the boats (x2?) are for Brechin AC members, so bank fishing  was the order of the day.
Loch Saugh is a really pleasant Loch in great surroundings BUT fishing from the bank means, at best, the fishing is reduced to a fraction of the water. Steep banks, weedbeds, bankside vegetation (behind and in front), overhanging trees, make for a frustrating but possibly rewarding (if trout are landed) outing.
There were many more fish showing at the East? end of the loch (narrowest end, other end from the boathouse) but this is frustratingly difficult to fish ( I wasn't enjoying myself on at least two occasions - and the midgeez were at their most brutal here).

Still, I had two lovely Browns and touched a good few more.

If I could tube it I'd be found there quite often as it is as if it was designed by a tuber, with lots of Trouty features which can only be really exploited from the shakey.

I'll be back but I hope no-one brings a swearbox or it'll cost me dear.

Iain,
I spent many days at Saugh in my youth - at least as soon as I could drive - I always felt it was a difficult place to fish, and as you say, the shallow end was fairly inaccessible. Mind you I am going back 30+ years, things may have changed since then.

This was my locasl water for years, having lived in Auchenblae and got married in Glen Saugh.

Back then I got free fishing being a resident of Auchenblae. The loch was damned to provide drinking water for the village and the story went that residents had the right to fish for Brown Trout for free. At that time the water was leased by Brechin AC and not really stocked.

I guess in total I spent 8 wonderful years fishing there.

You are right Iain..its a tubers paradise!!!
