Title: River Don Open Day 2009
Post by: Hamish Young on 13/04/2009 at 09:36
Folks,

Some of you may have seen information about this and it's all coming together nicely

The first 'River Don Open Day' will be held at Castle Forbes on Sunday the 24th of May, a poster for the event is on the front page of this site http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/news.html and further details will appear on www.riverdon.org.uk

The idea :? Well, it's pretty simple really.
Get all the relevant organisations in one place at the same time, throw in some well known angling 'faces', activities, casting tuition, competitions etc. Plus an auction of some excellent lots donated in aid of the River Don Trust plus local businesses (small and large) selling/demonstrating their products and crafts plus some kids stuff too and you have the first event of its kind on Donside.

The focus is very much River Don, for local anglers and those further afield, it will be a chance to put faces to names and more importantly to put your questions to members of the Trust team, the RDBTIA, DDSFB members and Jim Kerrs' team about what is going on with the river, what the future holds and how you might be able to help. Amongst other things, the new RDBTIA River Don roving ticket scheme (an affordable 1 day or 6 day ticket which gives access to many miles of the Don) will also be launched on the day.

It's a free to enter event; all we would ask is that anyone coming through the event on the day supports the Trust by bidding generously at the auction or with a donation. Not much to ask really  :wink

There will be 2 marquees on the day, one for angling and one for the local businesses, an outside caterer and something for the kids - so a family event. Please do support the day and come along on the 24th.

I hope to see you then  :z16

Hamish  :z3

PS - If you'd like to help out on the day, donate something to the auction or would like to partcipate then email me rdbtia@btinternet.com NO LONGER VALID

Hi Hamish,

'Good' to read it's all over by the time we're in Scotland...  :cry

Hopefully this will become an annual/bi-annual event, so we can keep it mind when planning a visit.

Good luck with the Ørgänizáziøn, as they call it at Dutch Flyfair. I know how much time and effort go into such an event.

There will be some more auction lots appearing here over the next few days.  Would be good to see all the forum members that are even occasional Don fishers at the event, weather permitting, it will be a good event.  Even if the weather is less than favourable, most of the attractions will be under cover and, admission is free.

Amongst other things going on will be.....

Casting demonstrations with an emphasis on techniques, set ups and tactics applicable to Don fishing for all species with both single & double handed rods, tuition from SANA instructors, flytying demos, and casting competitions.  The casting competitions must be won by someone, instructors, trust members etc are not allowed to enter, prizes are being donated by Orvis so, have a shot, you have nothing to lose!!
There will be many toys to play with on the day either on grass or on the water.

Hope to see you there

Hi Dave
Thanks for that, it will be interesting to find out more about this and maybe support it at Sunday's event :z16

I'm not being funny ..... but why is it on the "adaa" website? :z8

Best wishes

Title: Re: River Don Open Day 2009
Post by: Dave Gordon on 20/05/2009 at 21:34
Hi Mike

Thats an easy one. We are selling "friends of the river Don" via the ADAA site because we get it for free, and because i set up the sales site for the ADAA! We would eventually like to host this on our own site but as you know web shops are expensive and we feel that using this partnership is in the best interests of the charity. We are always however keen to expand this, and if you are offering to also host this for us i would be delighted, will even buy you a burger and coke at the open day on sunday! :z4 May even make you our first friend!

The trust is now off and running, with Jamie Urquhart starting as our first biologist early next month. He will start to make the differences the Don needs and we will start running up costs, as we plan to start easing obstructions to fish migration and improving habitat immediatly. We will have a very small office for him to work from soon we hope, and will need to equip this. Obviously this will be open to anglers and interested parties to see what works are being undertaken and to have a brew!

We are trying to source a microfiche system to be used for scale reading, along with a microscope, this will run alongside our genetics survey, DNA testing salmon from throughout the catchment to identify the various groups of fish in the system and to see where for instance springers spawn, so we can target habitat improvements, to target the most underpressure stock components. Information on this and our other projects will be placed in the Friends section on the website as they happen (riverdon.org.uk) This will be a password protected friends area where they will get the most up to date information on the system, its inhabitants and our works.

As you can see, all this costs and the more we can protect our funds for projects, whilst still getting all we need to get, helps us spend money on the river, where it is needed.

Dave

I've happy memories of Castle Forbes (springers and some gorgeous trout) but haven't fished it for a couple of years. Would have come to the Open Day this weekend but have a family commitment (ill father) up north. Wish you all the best with the whole event. Dave

Hi folks :z16

So ..... who is coming along tomorrow then?

I'll be there, I'm taking along a wee table and some of my fly lines, so you'll hopefully find me in the tent. I'll take the demo lines too, so if anybody wants to bring their rod along and try them out, please do. Anybody buying a line tomorrow will get a free spool of Fulling Mill Copoly with it as a special offer ..... unless I run out of copoly :wink

I've been really looking forward to this event and it should be lots of fun. They might even let me have a go in the casting competition ..... cause they know I'll come last again :z4
Hope to see plenty of forum members :z16
Best wishes

I think i will pop along, what do you think! :z4 :z8

I was out today, and the venue is fantastic, the tents are huge and each stand will have plenty of room, and as for the casting area, again plenty of room, looks great. We managed to get a number of additional Auction lots as well so plenty to do tomorrow.

It should be fun and i am looking forward to discussing the river and Trusts works with people and getting their views.

Well, what a beautiful day it turned out to be!!

Sorry I could not have got there earlier but family matters delayed me...grrrrr.

Of what I saw I hope this event goes from strength to strength!!! Well done to all those who organised the event and those who turned up to exhibit and display.

One question, what happened to the flies being sold off for charity..i did not have any cash but would still like to buy some if possible...

Thanks again for a plesent afternoon!

Indeed the weather was very kind which added to the day. Pity I was short on cash as there were some great buys on the go. It was good to see the forum had a decent representation.
Forgot to get a River Don Beats Map though who's got one? ADAA website?

Hopefully the first of many.

By the way there were some generous cash donations also which may have gone relatively un-noticed. nice one Jim!

Rob

The flies from the FF&FT League raised several hundred pounds for the MacMillan Fund. A surprising amount of cash on their first outing - the look on the guys face was priceless. :z4

Most of the flies are good 'fishing flies' but there are some quite special creations in there. Some of the fully dressed flies attracted attention, so much so that two sold for £50.

Hopefully they will be distributed around the MacMillan organizers and will be on sale at future Big Fish events.

Many thanks to Ben and David for helping get that going.

Magnus

PS - Good first Don Open Day - hopefully a regular event.

Folks,

24 hours and a bit later and it's all still go :! I really don't know where to start  :shock We were blessed with fabulous weather, couldn't have asked for better.

I feel a wee bit like someone at the oscars ceremony with all of the thanks but here goes:
Firstly a big thank you to Castle Forbes who kindly allowed us the use of the grounds, they couldn't have been more helpful in getting the site ready and the venue was just great.

To Orvis, with particular mention for Ben Dixon - without his support and help it would have been a whole lot tougher to arrange (cheers Ben  :z16). The donation of a Helios as a star auction lot was extremely generous and went a considerable way to helping the auction achieve in excess of £1,600 for the River Don Trust.
To Rick Fyffe who worked tirelessly with Ben and I on making my crazy idea become a reality, he pulled more rabbits out of hats than you can imagine :!
To Paul Procter (& Richard :!) for sharing infectious enthusiasm about the river with everyone and for giving of time so freely.
To my fellow Directors of the RDT who did great things in the main marquee and fielded questions on all manner of Don related topics - cheers fellas
To everyone who donated their time (Alford FRS crew - cheers boys) and items for the auction -  a thousand thank yous :z16

I know I will have missed folk off that 'list', it is not intentional I assure you, but there seems to be so much to cover and so many folk to thank that this could go on and on and on and on and..... well, you get the picture :! If I didn't get around everyone I am sorry, could have done with 2 identical twins on the day  :shock To my very tolerant wife - cheers darlin'

We're still counting what came in on the day, donations were generous (thanks to all who dipped into their pockets, you know who you are :!) and I understand that the Friends of the Don scheme has got off to a very promising start; I'm delighted that the auction was well supported and 'our' Dave did a not bad job as auctioneer weeding elusive cash out of our bidders :wink Kenny Reid from the Dee won the  Helios and seems smitten with his new toy  :wink

I confess to being a wee bit weepy eyed at this stage as I have to leave when things are just coming 'together' for the river as a whole.
For me the 'toe in the water' exercise we did this year with the Don Open Day has proved its worth a thousand times over. There were disappointments and let downs, but like the Murphys I'm not bitter and I won't dwell on it.

As many of you will know I'll be moving on to pastures new and will very sadly have to give up my various connections with the Don, but I'm happier now we've had the day and seen the support that the local angling community (and in particular this forums members) has for the new initiatives.
It's not concrete by any means, but expect there to be developments in Sunday fishing for Brown Trout on the river this year  :z18

It all bodes very well for the future in my book.

I think it is highly likely, possibly a certainty, that there will be a similar event next year. I look forward to coming down from Inverness as a 'punter'  :z7

A few pics taken on the day:

I went to the River Don Open Day on Sunday to give the trust some support. I took my daughter along and she had a casting lesson for about an hour and really improved her casting.

For those of you who may be interested (and because he's my mate!) Paul Procter has a website which you can reach on www.paulprocterflyfishing.co.uk .

It's not all developed yet but if you click on the Blog bit you can see some nice Trout (just noticed that he has posted his 4lb 7oz Trout from Monymusk which he had last Monday) caught recently on the Don and some other rivers,

Plenty more fishy stuff there this year and with a bit of luck one or two more than is listed in the advert  :wink
I certainly hope to be there this year (in a social and entering competitions capacity), it's not too far away now

Looking forward to this...doesn't look like we will get the weather we had last year though.  It looks like there will be a good representation of tackle and shops exhibited. Personally I am looking forward to trying all the rods especially the Farios.

I have been on the Forum for a few years now and though I converse with you guys we have never met and it would be nice to put a face to a name. Can I ask if you go that you say hi especially Noel (An Chuileog), Iain (Goolager), Paul(grhe),Jim (Jedi) and Irvine (Hares Lug) as you all seem to be Don regulars, and anyone else who just feels like a blether. It would be great to have a chat and to hear how you guys are doing.

Roll on next Sunday! Ben get the Igloo heated up!

Should be a good day, there will be demos running throughout the day, mine will all be based around techniques I use for coping with the various challenges that fishing the Don often presents.

The casting competitions will consist of...

The Rio Outbound challenge, this will involve throwing a #7 outbound as far as possible

and

The Orvis Trout Casting Challenge which will be distance and accuracy combined

There will be space on both water and grass for casting and testing rods / lines and there will be a casting clinic running through out the day.

Hopefully the weather will hold for us, it will be a good day regardless.

Cheers

Forecast looks like rain at the moment, but I guess this could change between now and then ...... we are talking North East Scotland here :z4

We don't exactly get a lot of fishing events in Aberdeenshire, so it is certainly worth supporting one when folk are making the effort to hold one! :wink

Best wishes
Mike

For the optimists amongst us, here is the Met Office forecast:

"UK Outlook for Thursday 27 May 2010 to Saturday 5 June 2010:

On Thursday and Friday many areas will be dry with sunny spells, but with scattered showers developing in some places. Temperatures will be mainly near normal, perhaps warm in the south, but rather chilly in the north with risk of wintry showers over the Scottish Highlands. Through the weekend and for the start of the following week a more westerly flow is likely with some scattered showers or spells of rain, but with some brighter, warmer periods as well especially in the south. ........"

See you there

Irvine

Can anyone out there give me instructions on how to get there or better still give me the postcode so the Sat Nav can do all the hard work.
Cheers

OK, you could use postcode AB33 8BL which is for Castle Forbes Estate Office (close enough).

However, if you are coming from Aberdeen on the A944, be aware that the Keig bridge is currently shut and you need to divert via Alford. Now you could follow the councils official diversion which I believe takes you out to the Bridge of Alford (a long diversion :!) but the thing to do IMHO is to come into Alford and follow the signs for Montgarrie.
Once over the bridge at Montgarrie all you need to do is get to the end of the road and turn right and you will be heading for Keig. The event will be signposted.

Simples

I'm  sure it will be a grand day though and would encourage anyone who is undecided to go along.

Hopefully I'll get there next year.

I wish I was going :cry
it would be fantastic to get to an event that is so well
supported by people who genuinely care about MY river  :z18
I'm really missing getting out and about with the 3wt and the wild broonies
funny how these things are happening now when I'm not in the country  :z6
yet for the rest of my life no one ever bothered. Guess that's the way the cookie crumbles
ho hum :z6 maybe by the time I get back it will have matured into a significant event in the Scottish angling
calender and not just a show for those who love the river. Here's hoping :z16

anyway I hope you all enjoy the day

Sandy

It was certainly very very wet for most of the morning  :cry Chest waders, good boots and wading jackets seemed to be the dress code  :shock
Fortunately it cleared up in the afternoon and it seemed to me that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves; I know I did.
It was a pleasure seeing some old friends too :wink
Funnily enough, it was the same four left at the end of the day having a debrief and tidying up as last year :!
Well done to Rick and Ben for organising this years event, I'll be down the road from Inverness for next years

I did not realise I knew so many people!..Had a good if not extremely wet morning. Shame I had to be away by 11.30 as I would have liked to have seen the casting etc.

The cheeseburger was lovely :)

The chap I brought along from York was suitably impressed and wanted to come back next year, but will wellies!

Thanks to the guys who put it together, a big well done!

I watched the Met Office rainfall radar on the internet in the morning so I turned up just as the rain stopped. It was a good afternoon and a great chance to blether, swap ideas, pick up useful information and watch the demos by very good instructors. The casting competitions were fun too. Need to work on the accuracy, but I knew that already.

Many thanks to everyone who put in the effort to organise a good day. I hope it goes from strength to strength.

Cheers

Shame I had to work so I didn't get there until 4. Still got to meet a few folk that I hadn't seen in a while. Looked like it would have been a good day and will make sure to have a full day there next year.

Great day;shame about the weather-reckon more would have turned out in the sun! Good to see some familiar faces and new ones too.

Sorry we missed you Noel, had to shoot off for a bit of fishing further south as it gave bright sun in Aberdeenshire today.

Had a good chat in the car on the way down discussing new ideas for next years Don Open Day!

Thanks for the Sedgehog Allan!

We had very poor weak fishing on the river Don and river Dee and the rain was very bad at the river Don day so we did not stay very long and there was not many other peoples there. We area back in Norway now for a few weeks and fishing is better now

Magnus

Sorry you did not have a good week. As has been said many times in fishing circles "You should have been here last week"

Waterside beat had 21 Salmon and 84 sea trout for the week.  Here is a link to the river report
