A couple of days late in answering this one but here are a couple that I have being tying. The first is a stonefly pattern to test out additional uses for Klinkhammer hooks and the second is a shrimp pattern that I tied with my 5year old daughter's help.

A couple of crackers there Mike, well done :z16
-
Baz,
I notice you tied a pheasant tail nymph in your selection - how do you get on with PTNs? I personally think they are great and tie them in the American style with a peacock thorax and PT legs.

For the first time this winter I've spend some time at the tyingbench (thank you, creditcrunch :mad). I've tied some CDC&Elk (size 10 and 16) for our upcoming trip to The Don. Sorry, no pics...

Bloody Kids :roll Fancy getting sick on my first day off without ice :z8 I dunno.
Still i was playing at the vice this morning, trying a little trick from rod building to try and make a nice translucent buzzer.
Seeing the flies getting posted with varnished bodies, had me thinking. This is the outcome.
It looks pretty standard but has something i cant quite put my finger on
Its all made of thread too :wink no paint

Jay
Try tying the hackle in by the tip. The stalk is much thinner so the head ends up less bulky.
Hope that helps, :z16 or maybe you are doing that already :z8
Cheers
Irvine
-
Hi Jay,
If you are doubling the hackle , as Irvine says ,tie it in by the tip . Then , assuming that you are right handed , hold the butt end of the hackle between your thumb and index finger of your right hand , then use the thumb and index finger of your left hand to stroke the hackles backwards so that they mesh with each other. Wetting helps . Reverse the instructions if you are left handed. Do not pull too hard as the finer tip may break.
On the subject of small heads don't tie in the very fine tip but snip this off , make a V shaped end by stroking a few hackles forward and tie in this section in . You can gently pull through to minimise but make sure you have hold of enough to hackle to make it secure. Don't use lots of wraps ,you don't need them.
Alternatively , and depending on the pattern, you can strip one side of the hackle of its fibres and tie this in . Good for low water , low "profile" patterns.
Hope that makes sense and helps.
:wink
-
Hi Guys,
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the advice sounds like i'll be glued to the tying bench for another week  ........... not that i'm complaining of course! :z4
Cheers,

-
They look bonny, what are you using for a body?
-
Nice Iain ...... very nice :z16
Cheers
Mike
-
They look good Iain, a few more coats of varnish maybe !
The Monikie troots will be loving them iam sure :z16
I will post some of my ones later :z18
-
a few more coats of varnish maybe
Yup, to produce a better finish BUT I can't be bottomed! as you can tell by the smeared varnish on the bottom two on the left :z6
Peter, the body is stripped peacock herl and I'm quite impressed as they have turned out ok and (no joke) I've been tying them in poor light so it's been a lottery if the 'segmentation' turns out sastisfactorallaly! :z4
Anyone got any interesting patterns on the go?
Iain

Funnilly enough almost identical to your buzzers
-
Peter,
and the pictures are..? where?
-
Iain have you done any with collars of tinsel below the thorax yet?
-
(http://i42.tinypic.com/9rnkm9.jpg)
That'll be a yes then. :z3
-
They look like they were stolen out of my box :z4
Good effort anyway, what sizes of hooks did you go for?
Ell chunky green monster is yet to be given a test swim
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2q0k9rc.jpg)
But this blue collared buzzer is taking alot of fish the now :wink
(http://i42.tinypic.com/6h25u0.jpg)
-
Nice Collared buzzer - could do with a couple more coats of SH though! :z7 :z7 :z7
Hooks I'm currently using are Kamasan B175's in 10's & 12's. My usual B100 & 110's in 12, 14 & 16's are fine for tying the smaller buzzers but I think straight hooks have to be larger for the same size imitation. if that makes sense.
-
Have another go at the photos please Baz ..... You forgot to resize them :oops
Cheers
Mike
-
Peter,
and the pictures are..? where?
An irish cormorant with stripped herl body
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2djs2hl.jpg)
A stripped herl bodied buzzer - like yours Iain
(http://i42.tinypic.com/14abtb8.jpg)
And a Davy McPhail Blue buzzer - I think the light got to the biots coz they're actually blue not white with a blue edge.
And I missed a bit of the end of the body with the varnish :shock :oops Good thing it's only for trout :grin
-
Peter,
Is it Artifly Electric Blue biots? If so it could be a dying issue as I've the same problem with mine.
Nice flies though - like the Irish Cormorant.............back to the bench :z10
Iain
-
Now posting pics is a tad easier it looks like this page will be getting pebble dashed with images!
Nice flies peter :z16

-
Peter,
I can't seem to lay my hands on my JC at the moment so I'm making things up as I go along.

From the vice today; a couple of Superpuppa. I’ll used to tie them in two colours yellow/black and green/brown.
Originator is the Swedish flytier Lennart Bergqvist.
The Superpuppa will imitate a swimming pupae. The best of all, it’s simple too tie and it catch a lot of fish.
Here is a description how too tie.

Gerry from Artifly should be able to sort you out at a good price, i just got a chatreuse dyed jungle cock and also half an orkney peach dyed jungle cock!
They were suppose to be budget capes at £20 each but they are perfect as far as iam concerned!
Great for cormornt cheeks and cheeks on spiders/wets :z16

Looks fishy to me Iain, I got my JC from Neil Anderson in Forfar, definetly worth a look if you're down that way. In fact mine is probably too good as theres not that many split feathers on the cape. Cost me £40 after christmas.
The wing on mine is bronze mallard which can be tricky to find in goos quality, hopefully mr cookshill will be at the game fair or even someone at the royal show though I'm told its not really got much in the fishing line.
-
Anyone been tying anything intresting up lately, getting pretty quiet on here the now :z6
I will stick some photos up later tonight :z18
-
A couple of cormorant combos that have been doing well for me lately :z18
