Title: IAA March to the River
Post by: Brian Brand on 23/01/2009 at 21:21
 :z2 :z2 :z2 :z2 :z2

Inverurie Angling Association's annual march to the River Don takes place this year on Saturday 14th February.

We meet up outside the Kintore Arms Hotel, High Street, along from Sloan's shop.

The March will leave the Hotel at 9:30am, led by a piper, and goes down to the River Don at the Road Bridge where our local Minister, Graeme Longmuir, will bless the River for the forthcoming season.

This event is organised by IAA but as always there is an open invitation to all, you can enjoy a dram to toast the new season.

Also since it is Valentines Day you could bring your Wife / Girlfriend as a special treat to her but please don't bring both of them it might cause a scene (or Husband / Boyfriend).

As per last year it is a great chance to meet up with some like minded fellow fishers.

Hope to see you there,
Regards,
Brian.

Bri,

I was there last year with the bairn and although he's only 19 months he now has his own rod and reel so we'll be there and he can show it off.

Hi Brian, thanks for keeping us up to date on the march :z16

It would be grand if we could have a good turnout from the forum this year. I will be there ...... the loch will probably still be frozen at this rate anyway! :z4

If anybody fancies it, maybe we could make it a forum day out? Raise a glass to the river in the morning and then some of us could stay on the river in search of a silver tourist, while others could go back over to Haddo for a wee fishing session, a blether, coffees etc and maybe even a barbecue or something? Just an idea ...... a few of you have more or less done this in the past anyway :z17

Here is a photo of the River Don March in 2000 and I added a couple to the gallery from 2005

Nice tradition you have over there, with the march. We don’t have any tradition like that here in Sweden. Hope for nice day out. :z16

Cheers to the river

You will have to start a new tradition of your own Harri :z17

The IAA March to the River Don was probably started as a celebration of the new salmon fishing season on the river, as per other similar events in Scotland ..... But, over the years and with the Don being such a marvelous mixed species river, it has grown in to a celebration of the new season for our trout anglers as well  Even though the trout anglers have to wait a number of weeks before the brown trout season opens :wink

I think the fact that this event has grown in to a celebration of "the river" is a great thing! :z16

Best wishes

If the weather continues like this and we are unable to fish Haddo after the March , how about we just meet up at the hut for a blether , swop flies , have  a go with sombody else's gear. I've loads of fishing books if anyone is looking for something to read,  I could bring the barbie and a few burgers.

Just an idea , but lets hope the weather does improve

It was great to see folk from the Don Fishery Board and the River Don Trust coming along too, I hope they enjoyed the march and will come along again in the future!

And the Minister and the Bissets with their poems and the blessing of the river, what can I say ...... Fantastic :z16

Hi all,

As Mike has said above many thanks to all who attended today, it was good to see some new faces.

Thanks to the Raymond & Heather Bisset and Graeme Longmuir for their words and also to the River Don Trust representives for turning up.

I didn't have my camera either but I am sure that I will get some from the other folk that were taking photos and put them onto this site.

Well tight lines to all for 2009 and hope to see some of you down on the river, or lochs, if not hope to see you back this time next year.

Regards,
Bri.

It seems you had a nice walk and a good “party” at Don. :z16
Yesterday I had my own march in my home town, to River Gavle. Unfortunately there were no pipes and no celebration.
The stretch, from the sea up to the power station is only about 2 km.
No fish were taken as far as I know.

Hey folks,

good to see a few folk turned out for the march!

slightly off topic, but...

at what point on the map of the beat can you park and gain access to the river (at the top of the beat)??

There is a lay-by up besides no.3 and one opposite ardtannes farm.

The fishing hut beside the road on the map :z6 is actually the best of the carparks, and encourages you to walk up through some good water to get to the top :z16.
The hut is actually down by the river and can be seen from the carpark :wink

Having a look at the map No9 should be the `Port Dooker' and not `Cooker' and should be up from the new bypass bridge, just down from the Rays.

In case you don't know what a Dooker is, it is somewhere you went for a Dook, hope this helps.

As Sandy has said above the car park is above the Rays Hut and there is also one  above from the Boat pool, but as they are passing places (they have been extended though) I am never 100% sure that we should be parking in them. Latterly I used to leave my car in Upperboat Road, beside the bridge, and just walked up the beat.

There should be a new car park built for walkers & fishers beside the new houses, at the other side of the bypass from the Hospital, but I have never been down there this season to see if it is there yet.

Regards,
Bri.

The new car park has been built beside the new houses, at the other side of the bypass from the Hospital, the access shares the road to the houses then directly off that to the left.
:z2 :z2 There is a track leading from the car park down towards the river.

Bri.
