Thanks again to all who attend the first evening :z18
I have had a number of requests to arrange another flytying night at the shop, how does Wednesday 11th February sound? I am aware that this is Don opening day so if everyone will be catching springers then we could do the week before or after.
Theme of the second night will be saltwater & pike. As before, could any interested parties drop me a PM.
Cheers
Ben

Peter,
Do you fancy sharing transport on wednesday night?
-
sounds like a plan barry if we're not snowed in.
-
I was looking at the forum weather link just now ..... looks like it will hopefully be reasonable tomorrow and then get quite a bit colder with more and more snow from Wednesday through to Sunday-ish :z3
Cheers
Mike
-
Banchory weather when I left this morning was rain, rain and more rain! The forecast is more rain with a flurry of snow thursday.

Have you seen where the wind chill factor is going from about 3pm tomorrow afternoon :shock
I guess we've got more ice on the way if this proves true :z6
Cheers
Mike
-
Think the cairn o mount is not my best route for tomorrow night then :z6
-
Roads in and around Banchory were fine on the way home tonight and the forecast for tonight & tomorrow is more rain however it is forecast to snow tomorrow night. Should be fine I think.
Cheers
Ben

Know what you mean. The second a little bit of snow falls (or rain for that matter) town drivers either, 1 - forget how to drive and go 10mph everywhere or 2 - dont drive. Lucky Im from the country hehe.
Gonna give it a go at getting out tongiht tonight.
Where you in the Dicso? Dont think my sporty coupe will be as good on the drive lol
-
Are the roads good enough to make an effort up the road, whats everyones thoughts?

I think it will be ok. Roads were blakc top in town now and its raining. Might be different put at Banchory and expect it to be ice on way home.
-
I'm Afraid i'm gonna welch on this one :z10
Pishing down here, but really don't fancy the best part of 4 hrs driving there and back, In the dark when it's very likely to be icy later.
Besides I'm cold and sore after getting carried away in the garage.
So i'm a Girl :z8 who cares :z7
Sorry Ben :oops
Sandy
-
That's my taxi gone then :z7
Sorry Ben :oops I'm going to give tonight a miss too :z10
Best wishes
Mike
-
Roads here are not too bad, rained for last few hours and most of the snow has gone from the roads although the Cairn is still closed. Don't think it is forecast to turn real cold until much later on but you can never tell.
I will be here for anyone who makes it, if no one has turned up by 7pm I will head home and rearrange for another day.
Cheers
Ben
-
Just away to leave now so if iam not there by 7 iam either stuck in snow or lost :wink
-
How did you get on guys ....... loads of interesting stuff?
Sorry I missed it :z6
Best wishes

YEa was really good IMO. I finally learned what seems to be the best way to tie EP Flies and also a lovely little fry pattern. Also some CRAZY Pike flies.
Great night and good company.
Thanks again to Rob and Ben
-
A pleasure Cameron...and a thanks to Ben again for the venue, organising it all and the 3 strands of crystal flash I borrowed ;)
-
Thanks again to Rob & Ben for a very intresting night :z16
Some cracking flies were tied and lots of ideas are now floating about my head :wink
:z18
-
Top marks for another excellent evening!
Robs' presentation/ demonstrations on Pike flies were tip top
Bens' SWFF flies were great - and are already being cloned for the Broonies with a desire for the briney :wink
It was also good to put a face to BAZ at last (not the ugliest bloke I've met but I doubt he keeps a mirror in his house! :z4)
Only joking Baz (I'll send you boot info tonight)
Thanks again Kev for the tying stuff.
Roll on the next one :z16
Iain
-
Here's my 1st attempt at the EP Perch Fry - I'm quite happy with it but there are improvements to be made at all the various stages.
I'd tie another tonight but Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) in 'The Secret Weapon' awaits.
Rob, Hope you approve
Iain
-
No holding you back is there iain :shock
What 2 colours was that you used :?
I will make an attempt tomorrow :wink
Nice fly :z16
-
Thanks Baz,
EP Fibres are Golden Olive up Top, Gold underneath, Gills - Red & Gill Cover - Orange. There is also a strip of Holo Chromosone Flash (which doesn't show along the lateral line as I tied it in badly :oops).
The Hook is a size 2/0 Varivas 2600 ST-V
Now I need a rotary drier :z8 blinkin 'eck!
Good Luck
Iain
-
Thanks to all who braved the weather and attended, and many thanks to Rob for a superb demonstration on working with EP. I learned a lot from that.
Next evening will be "trout streamers, manshit flies for manshit fish".
Cheers
Ben
-
I started an EP Fry last night also. Will post a pic when finished.
-
Looking forward to seeing it Cameron me old son

Hopefully get it finished either today or on sunday as Lochter is now cancelled. I dont have any big eyes tho so will be a photo without them untill I can hit a hobbie shop.
-
Iain,
Spot on mate...love it..will catch fish, no doubt on that!!!
Try tying up the same fly with the same stripes and eyes but with a fluro green top and orange bottom which will give yoiu a "fire tiger" version which is a superb for "dirty" water.
Great fly!
-
Thanks Rob,
I'm limited at the moment due to the colours of EP that I have but I'll add Fluorescent Green to my list.
Can't wait to try it and am looking into the materials I need for one of those 2 tone deer hair, zonker strip type poppers.
Should really be tying Salmon flies :z6
I bought a stonefly rotary drier today which added an hour onto my home journey! :cry
I'll be needing it later :wink
Iain

Got some eyes at John Lewis today. Not stuck on yet but you get the idea

Not to shabby cameron, where are you hiding the hook :z4
I had probs finding materials so ended up buying some online so will just have to wait until they arrive before i start playing :z6

haha yea its just under the very front fibres, you can make it out, directly in line with the end of red...............JUST
I did use a bit too much fibers. But its a first attempt so...
-
I think they look brilliant :z16
Wish i'd gone now, although the roads out here were really shit, still are today :z10
Now can anyone do a trout about 4" long :wink
Or better still how about a Step by step, so i can give it go too, purleeeese :grin

Right here's my last two as I need to sort out some Salmon patterns,
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg214/goolager/IMG_6573.jpg)
I'm much happier with these but I still can't seem to get that lateral line material where I'd like it.
still - getting closer
Iain
Sandy,
I'm a few colours shy of representing a trout but I've ordered some more.
I bet Rob has Trout patterns already tied.
-
Sorry Cam. forgot to say
great looking fly - we're obviously not in Rob's league but I'm sure we can catch on these.
Keep them coming.
Iain

You must have far to much spare time :shock, Cant wait to see if you catch on them :z16

Excellent stuff guys :z16
Great to see you experimenting with such a wide range of patterns and materials, from these cracking flies down to wee dries.
Best wishes
Mike
-
Bumped into Rob in a certain emporium of fine tackle on Friday (late) afternoon, we discussed a few things in fly design/methods but I'm intrigued..... and also wish I could have gone to the second evening. But, work comes first :z6
I can't see why some of those materials couldn't be made to work in salmon flies. For example, I'm already using some Orvis "super hair' to support arctic fox in some patterns, I can see great possibilities in a merge of techniques :z17
Time to get my fly tying head on again :wink
Hamish :z3
-
I'll do a step by step if you like...try and do it tonight :)
As for trout patterns..ohhhhh yes :)..I have them in Rainbow and Brown and a sort of Parr too. :)
As Hamish was saying, I cannot see why these would not work for Salmon as is. I think I will try a "Rapala" one tonight for a laugh..silver lower, blue top and a yellow eye!
Dressed slim they would be dead ringers for a rapala!!
And Iain, there is nothing wrong with those flies..spot on, they look really good!!!
-
Oh..and like I said on the night, its a style of fly rather than a specific pattern..no reason why you cannot run some "flash" down the outside for a lateral line effect, of tie a tiny amount of Angel Hair into the back or belly. You can also add a whisp of EP fibre down the flanks to give a highlight....I often add a fine whisp of pink along the flank to give it a "rainbow" feel about it when dressing a beige back and white belly.
The same tying technique can be used for DNA fibres and this gives an amazingly lifelike fish pattern!
I will stick up some pictures of the flies from Wednesday :)
-
Great stuff Rob :z16
Cheers
Mike
-
Are we going to set a date for another evening?
:z18
-
Hi Baz,
Working on it, got a lot on right now with work & I have some exams coming up, part of which takes place this weekend. I hope to get a night arranged for early to mid March and the theme will be trout streamers, will do some flies and I have a fishing presentation I can give too if that appeals to anyone.
Cheers
Ben
-
Iam up for learning anything to do with catching fish so look forward to hearing about another Night later on down the line :z16
-
Definitely will not be next Wednesday, some shit about salmon on TV next Wednesday night!
Ben
-
looking forward tot he next night.
-
This is not as easy as i thought - what an ugly wee fly this turned out to be, guess i must go over the step by step again :z6
(http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq20/bigtroot/DSC00366.jpg)
-
Not sure about the colours Baz but there's nowt wrong with the fly itself :z15
-
Baz,
That will catch fish, tie it to a very fast sinking line, throw it into the Don and strip like mad.
Next flytying evening will probably be the 3rd wk in April, will check out the diary and post something early next week.
Cheers
Ben
-
Any further thoughts on another gig Ben?
Peter
-
I would recommend Orvis gear. The guarantee and service is the best there is. No quibble. I bought an Orvis rod in the US, broke it years later (my fault) and had it replaced in the UK no questions asked. You get what you pay for.
-
Hi Ben do you plan to have any more nights this winter?
-
maybe Peter, depends how cold my cottage gets over the next few weeks! :z4 I would think so, once the fishing season is done.
Cheers
Ben
-
excellent looking forward to it. Last years were very informative

Volvo's are quite low tho, C30 ARE SOOOOOOOO NICE BTW
what you think?

Never seen a body kit on a Reliant before..lol...I have the R-design Sport, but its also the "drive E" engine so the car is 30mm lower and is "sealed" underneath....totally smooth..but that means it scrapes my track to the house..lol.
Cass has the Alfa Romeo Mito Veloce :)

Its actually ok, you wouldnt think so but it is. Gets over "most" speedbumps, all be it very slowly haha
Anyway, I'd be up for this. Maybe take my kit with me and tie along while demonstrations are taking place.
