Title: The Barrio Winter Fly Tying Competition
Post by: Mike Barrio on 25/11/2006 at 16:54
Anybody fancy a winter fly tying competition for a bit of fun? I have a basic idea in my head  :?:

Based around a stillwater fly in December, a river fly in January and a salmon/sea trout one in February

I'll put up a few wee prizes to add to the fun

Best wishes
Mike

OK Guys

Hamish, Mike and myself are going to judge the flies this year.
So there will be 3 sets of points awarded and we will add them together to get scores.

You will be judged on

Tying skill
Originality
Proportion
Fishiness (how effective the fly is likely to be in its intended purpose)

There will be one winner each month and over the 3 months the points total for each entant will be added together to find the overall winner.

You can drop the flies off at Haddo or you can send me a PM and i'll give you an address to post them to.

THE FLY FOR DECEMBER WILL BE A STILLWATER TROUT FLY

You have until the 15th of January to send us the flies for round 1.

Get tying and have fun :z16

Thanks Sandy  :z16
My apologies for the delay with a reply folks

The prize each month will be a boat for the day on Haddo and for those who live too far away I'll find something "fishing tackle" as an alternative

The prize for the overall winner will be a fly rod

Please send two examples of your fly when entering the competition .......... and Hamish had a grand idea, we'll put all the entries together at the end of the competition and run an auction on the forum for them and the money raised from this will be donated to The Wild Trout Trust

Best wishes

If he can't register for any reason .... twist my arm .... and I'll make it for "Forum members only and Colin's Dad"  :z4   :z4   :z4

Hi Sandy

I have some flies coming from Peter, probably in a parcel that they couldn't get through my letter box yesterday?

I've got a card to collect a parcel from the post office, but wasn't up to collecting it this morning cause my back has been killing me for a couple of days and walking etc is a tad painful ( so is sitting in this chair for more than a couple of minutes! )

Will get them to you asap

:z5 ROUND ONE RESULTS  :z5

Hi folks

Sandy and myself enjoyed some splendid hospitality at Hamish's residence yesterday evening and I am now in a position to reveal the top five flies from round one:

(5th) John Brown "jbb"
(4th) Chris McAllister "Turra"
(3rd) Irvine Ross "Hares Lug"
(2nd) Derek Howie "derek 365"
(1st) Peter McCallum "rabbitangler"
Well done Peter, as the winner of round one you have won yourself a day's fishing on Haddo .........  :z14

NOW THEN DON'T FORGET THAT ........... all those who entered were awarded points for their flies and these points will obviously count towards your final scores at the end of the three rounds ......... so that you can win the main prize, which is a fly rod

ROUND TWO IS UNDERWAY and Sandy has asked you to tie a SALMON fly for this one. The same rules apply as in round one, the prize for the round is once again a day's fishing at Haddo and your entries are to be in by the 15th of February.
SO ....... what are you waiting for?  :z8  get your vice out

I'll try to get some photos of the flies posted on here soon
Best wishes

Title: The Barrio Winter Fly Tying Competition
Post by: Sandy Nelson on 23/01/2007 at 16:49
All the entries were good, especially considering some of you have only just started.
The main points that seem to have gotten raised when we discussed the flies were, some of the flies were overly complicated, some of the varnishing left a lot to be desired and quite a few of the patterns would not quite achieve the desired effect in the water due to either the wrong choice of material or lack of a significant feature.
However although we did come up with different marks individually, the final scores seemed like an accurate reflection on the flies.
What i can say is there is plenty scope for the overall comp to change many times as most of the combined marks were fairly similar.

I thoroughly enjoyed looking at peoples ideas, and i'm looking forward to the next batch.

It was illuminating judging the salmon fly section  :z5  I have one or two small observations which I'd like to make, these are in no way a criticism of any one tyer as the tying was all to a very good standard  :z16

1. Remember the principal knot employed by salmon fishers for attaching a conventional salmon fly to a cast/leader remains the double turle/turl knot. On many of the flies there simply wasn't the space to tie one which cost marks from me - I'm harsh, I know

2. A salmon fly should not only be a work of art but it should also be 'hardy'. By that I mean the wing or materials simply should not seperate from the body at all. One or two entrants again lost points as the wings came loose with the gentlest of tugs, those wings would come out in normal use on the 1st cast.

I'm looking forward to the next round  :z9

Absolutley

the quality is really high, i can also tell you there is very little in it as regards overall points. Given the flies are marked out of 120 most of the flies had between 1 and 5 marks between them.
So its all to play for.

Some really good trout entries so far too.

What i found was that by marking them the way we did, the marks were much closer. And provided a more level playing field.
Also having 3 opinions changed things dramatically.
I thoroughly enjoyed doing it, but most credit goes to mr B who put up the prizes.

Now all we have to do is work out how to auction the flies and who should benefit, IDEAS please :z16

Aye - it's been an enjoyable experience   Very interesting seeing different ideas and methods from all who entered (Jay - you give up :?:) it was down to the wire at the end :!:

Mike, Sandy and I did discuss selling the flies off on auction here and donating the proceeds to the Wild Trout Trust. However, I had another idea    this morning after a particularly strong coffee

This site is certainly the 'home' of all things River Don and is unquestionably the finest online information source for the river (IMHO at least   ) so might it be an idea to auction off the flies to support the Don hatchery :?:

Hi Mike
I have seen Andrew tie a lot better, his G-- Fly thePinkie,Blood worm. This fly has caught Plenty of your fish and on a lot of other fishiers.
Salmon fly.   I thought he did great being his first salmon fly.
Hairs ear. Would have been better had he took his time, but will always catch fish. So i hope he beats me next year.I hope this will encourage other young anglers ,and adults to take part next time.

Buying some flies from shops are there to catch anglers.
Tying your own your tying to catch fish.

Hi Hamish
I dont care how strong your coffee was this morning, you cant say you will donate to the wild trout trust. Then at the end of com petion donate to some other cause  .If you want to donate to the don hatchery why not do so at the next fund raising event.

Henry,
Errrr - aye  :z6
If you read the thread a bit more closely you will observe that Sandy suggested in his last post that we might consider who/where might benefit from the proceeds of the auction   whilst I did rather think it had been previously agreed that we would donate the proceeds of this auction to the WTT what I did in my last post was follow Sandys lead and make what I considered a constructive alternate to the WTT by suggesting the Don hatchery as it's a more 'local' - a local auction for local trout, I like it  :z4
It's not what I say that matters but what we as a forum decide - I'm happy to see any organisation that helps angling and/or fish benefit from this or the next event
I'm looking forward to my next strong coffee  :z18

If you look back to Mike's post on the first page , he said that the proceeds would go to the Wild Trout Trust. so, in my humble view, having made the promise we should honour it.

As to the "how we do it", sounds like a grand excuse for a Forum gathering and Haddo is the obvious location. Unless anyone has a better idea.

PS What was in the coffee Hamish? Irish or Scotch? :z4

Sorely tempting with either    but it was espresso made from unfeasibly expensive coffee beans harvested by dusky virgins or nuns somewhere in Africa  :z4  (something like that anyway   ).

Hi folks

Yes, I feel that the money raised from the raffle on this particular occasion should be donated to the Wild Trout Trust ......... as this was our original intention

I think the reason for one or two of us thinking about possible alternatives for a donation ......... is that a good number of the forum members have already supported the WTT this month via their Ebay charity auction

A lot of forum members are asking me if we can do this again next winter? The answer is yes ......... I would be delighted to run another winter fly tying competition again next winter and this would be an excellent opportunity for us to support our local River Don Hatchery

The idea of a forum "day out" at Haddo in the near future is great thanks, I would like that and will put the kettle on  :z4
Can Sandy and Hamish PM each other to agree on a Saturday that they can both come along to please? and we can organise it from there

Lastly for now ......... I think we should auction the flies on here in a special thread ( rather than at a day out ) so that all forum members, including those who live overseas, can have the chance to win the flies

I hope this is OK
Best wishes
Mike Barrio

Now that's a nice way to start the weekend!

Thanks Mike, Sandy and Hamish, for taking the time and trouble to organise this competition. It's a nice way to test your skills, so I'm looking forward to the next one.

I'll post my patterns shortly.

Hi folks

Jeroen very kindly sent me a PM to say thanks for the competition which he enjoyed taking part in for the fun

"Although it's the first time ever I've won a prize with flytying, this competition to me was just for fun, so no need to send me a flyline. Maybe there's a youngster (Andrew or Jay) you can give it to? Cool way to sponsor a novice."

Thanks Jeroen!  :z16
I will award the prize to young Andrew, for tying three very nice flies and almost beating his Dad

Best wishes

Hi Andrew,

My pleasure, but in all honesty it's Mike you have to thank. He was so generous to donate the prizes.

I hope you'll catch a lot of fish with the line. Which one did you choose?

All the best from Holland,

Jeroen
