Title: "The Accidental Angler" new series on TV tonight
Post by: Mike Barrio on 12/11/2006 at 17:42
Just noticed that the first of the new series "The Accidental Angler" is on BBC2 tonight at 8pm.  :z16

1 of 4 fishing programmes in which Charles Rangeley-Wilson goes looking for unusual fish. He is heading for India tonight in search of "the mighty Mahseer" species.

I believe that the next one is about trout fishing?

Catch the programme if you can
Best wishes
Mike

Hmmm, I'm not so positive. True, the location was beautiful, great camerawork, the storyline was o.k., and fish he eventually caught a super fish, but for most of the hour I found the show quite boring, to be honest. The next episode is about troutfishing, hopefully more action.

Forget about getting a program about pure fishing on prime time terrestrial TV. This was a travel show with a bit of fishing thrown in.  I thought it was fine and certainly a massive improvement on Trout and About.  I look forward to the next one. Reminded  me a bit of salmon fishing: a lot of time on the water for very little return. That's just the nature of the game and in these days of "bagging up"  it may not have gone down to well with many anglers. I say well done the BBC for having the guts to screen a program that embraced something as politically  incorrect as catch and release fishing.

I thought it was really well done.
Sandra and I both watched it and enjoyed it.It was nice to see a fishing programme given the quality of production that others enjoy.
The type of fishing made no odds to me, i just soaked in the atmosphere and surroundings (a lot like being there oneself  )
I reckon its probably the best attempt at an angling show since they made "A Passion for Angling"
Really looking forward to next weeks one now.

I just caught the last 20 minutes or so as I was out, enjoyed what I saw though.
I can't beleive some people moaning because he did not catch enough fish.

Sandy agree about "A Passion for Angling" though there has been a great fishing programme on /tv since then though .... Trout & About :z4  :z4

I jest of course , " A river somewhere" was a fantastic programme , make sure you watch it if its ever repeated.

What a great program. Having trekked up to similar heights (a good bit higher in fact) in neighbouring Nepal I could really identify with CRW's state of exhaustion. Every step becomes a chore Never fished though although we were camped by the shore of a   lake at 4300M. I doubt if there were fish in it anyway and it being one of the most holy places in Hinduism  doubt if casting a fly  would have gone down too well!

How cool would it be to say you had a permit from a KING to fish. Stick that in your salmon beat & smoke it yer lordship :z7

I fell asleep half way through episode one when he was sitting on a rock doing nothing much for ever and a day. I stayed awake last night though.

I wanna go to Bhutan but the budget won't stretch that far. Could we stick prayer flags around Loch Vrotachan instead and just pretend.  :z4

Peter

I though it was pretty cool too that the Kings Great Grandfather had been the guy who had brought the fish into the country because he wanted to flyfish.
All hail the lowly Broonie :z14

Tonights show was....... well a bit slow to say the most, i didn't personally like it seemed like a bit too much hard work for such little of fish.

Jay

Thats the point.
Its about achievements and attaining goals, not the fish.
What he did was very difficult, if a bit slow. :z7

Don't know if you noticed Jay but it looked to me as if that wee brownie was on of the biggest fish in CRW's life. It certainly appeared to be worth more than the big trout from Bhutan.

Piscator non solem piscato

( I think thats how it goes though latin scholars are welcome to correct me!!)

THERES MORE TO FISHING THAN CATCHING FISH

I thought it was a great program myself, being from London and all that!. Strangly I was out Piking with a chap on Saturday who mentioned the Wandle as being an improving river. He has caught Trout from there, lots, and so did many of his mates, this is because it was stocked with Rainbows when he was younger, and every tom, dick and harry was knocking them out on rods, handlines and bamboo canes!!..lol.

Angling times did an article on it too in the summer. They fished that bit where he was standing next to the road with the railings. They took lots of nice Dace and Chub, plus a Brownie of about a pound :)

I know its a hard acheivement, but its just not my idea of fun, i like challenges but i prefer programs where they show you techniques to use, tackle etc. But yes i would have to agree with you if it were me i would be over the moon, the wildest i've ever fished was a trout loch in Shetland and it have quite a few wild brownies in it to say the most so you could say I've never really had any major challenges like the one on the program so i wouldn't know what it would be like. I didn't really think about it until i was in my bed.  :z4 So if you put it that way yes it was a good program.

I'll find you a challenge next spring Jay, it might perhaps involve some fly fishing on a wee burn ....... and I'm sure you'll enjoy it

aye, it looked like he was on the verge of tears.
did you see the motorbike they dredged out too... bet the owner was wondering where that was...

hopefully some of the conservation (ie catch & release for Mahseer) & environmental issues (the pollution of those london rivers was heartbreaking) will be taken on board by the viewers.

cheers

The program was, I believe, the last in the series. Let's hope the BBC commission some more. My own belief  is that it will  go some  way to repairing  the damage done to the public image angling by the likes of John Wilson. Especially when it comes to the treatment  of fish.

Paul Young's good though he's one of the only anglers that you see properly reviving the fish and not holding them up to the camera for 2 minutes straight. The only good thing I like about John Wilson's shows is the fact that he's trying to promote his own line of fishing rods and they keep breaking.  :z4 mind you "The Compleat Angler" is a good show as well.

Jay,
many of the rods you see him with are infact built on Northwestern blanks that he has doctored in some way. My fishing partner as a youngster down in London/Hertfordshire was Johns brother, Dave. John had a tackle shop at the time in Norwich and produced his own range of Pike and Carp rods. John, however, always wanted something different, so would take the butt from one rod and try a different tip etc..and thats why lots of his rods break

He is a plonker   , Dave is a much better angler and never publicises his cztches of huge Carp and Pike...also very good with Trout.

I watched the show yesterday and liked it very much. Nice to see him catch his trout and get all choked up. Over all, I liked the second show best, with the last one coming close. 1 and 3 were not my cup of tea. But cudos to the Beeb for broadcasting the series!
