Hi fellas. Names Derek, been chasing the spotties for years and registered before I realised I was south of the border to you lot, but have seen some interesting posts on here, so if you don't mind an old b*gger from cheshire being around that's nice :grin :z18.
OK, my problem. Have fished the last few years using sage SP 6wt, I like the feel and it suits me. Have a 3wt and that good too. Just inherited an RPL, not the + and cannot find a line that suits it, or me?. It came with a couple of 5wt lines one of which is a snowbee WF5F but I get no feel from this at all. Feels marginally better with a DT5F.
Today I stuck on an old worcester WF6 intermediate and slowed everything down and this line wants to fly. I never put so much line out before with no effort.
Has anyone found this or experienced this with sage or any other rods before ?. Just had a look at lefty Krey article recommending different line wts for rods but really want to use this tool but not to end up with a 3 piece.
Any comments very welcome.

lots of Old buggers from all over on here :z4 :z4 So welcome.
Its not uncommon to find that overlining a Sage rod to the next line weight up is the way to suit you :z16
We have found that it is very much dependant upon the way you cast. If you carry a lot of line in the air then you will find the line ratings for most sage rods are pretty much spot on. But if you don't then the next line up is often the ideal solution. The RPL is a stiffer rod than the SP you are used too, so you will find you are looking for a feel that the rod may not provide unless you overline it a little, to make it bend more. Trying different lines to see what suits you is the best idea :z16

Yes my SPs are a fairly slow rod and as I say suit my style well and this RPL is old but very lightly used.
I was looking forward to using it but as I say was unimpressed until it surprised me with the 6wt. I,ve never believed that distance is everything and do pretty well fish wise but this rod makes me wonder :grin
May even get to see the backing knot yet. :grin

PS. Carrying a lot of line for me is around 15yds of double taper so maybe i,m losing the cast with a WF.

Sound reply from Sandy, experiment with as many different lines as you can. It is amazing how different a rod will feel with different lines and one size up or down can turn one in to your favourite wand :wink

Welcome and basically echo what Sandy and Mike have said. Its ofetn up to individual taste and casting style , one mans meat etc

I had a very similar problem with my Zero Gravity. its a #5 and did not like one of Mikes lines on it. Bought an Airflo Forty plus and that transformed the feel of the rod..and later found out that the #5 Forty + is infact weighted more like a 6 weight..so changed to a standard 6 weight line and its lovely now! Having said that, I have also gone back to Mikes line for fishing Klinks and the like and changed to a short, fast casting stroke and the rod likes that too :)
Sooooo, might be worth trying a slightly shorter casting stroke with your original line.
Oh the joys of rods and lines :)
Oh..and welcome..fished in Cheshire a few times..but for Carp :) Burton Mere before it went all commercial. Always though it would be fun to fly fish for the carp there as I used to see them on the top all the time :)

update.
Tried a few lines while the lad was watching me cast and discovered my problem was a lazy backcast probably due to SPs and DT lines.
Anyway worked out best line for my casting was another snowbee, WF5 XS DP. Got a nice long belly apparently. After a bit of practice managed 23yds + 5/6 yds of leader. For me, this is one amazing feeling and given that mostly I fish dries or buzzers is as far as I need.
Wow!! 20+ yards of bone straight line with a lovely delicate touchdown :grin :grin. Nice 3 rainbows in the freezer on a shipmans. :z18.
This thing will use anything from a 3wt to a 6wt as was shown by my bloke today so yes, you could very well be right Mike, about the favourite wand. It certainly does all and more than my SP.
On the bizarre side of things Tony recognised the rod as one he modified the reel seat on for my old man in the 90s.
