About time for a new thread as winter is now upon us (well some of us :z7)
Here is the product of the last few days for me, ready for a dip out in Hervey Bay, QLD.
Rattle rousers (they rattle :wink)

Hopefully they might get me into a Golden trevally, i'll let you know

During my enforced confined to barracks I've finally tied a few flies
-
I like the flies Peter, but are you sure its a good idea to keep safety matches in your fly box? :grin

Something I saw last year, then lost, then found again yesterday.
Just need to get the colours sorted.

Bodies are white glowbright over a white thread body. Stuart uses PTFE tape under the glowbright - couldn't find any when I was tying sop used thread. the coloured ones are glowbight tied over the white. Then 4 - 6 coats hard as nails.
-
Cheers Peter,
Just the norm then :z16
PTFE tape is good but fish often tear it to shreads after a while :z6
Thanks

The tape is an underbody Baz, you put a layer on the thread then cover with Glowbright floss. If not - as with mine - the glowbright isn't as bright. The okay dokays that Stuart tied recently are eyeburning white.

I have some that are only ptfe on the bodies with a fine silver rib!
They are very bright but like i say dont last long after a few fish !
Will try your ideas when i get home, sounds intresting enough!
:z16
Recently been using this instead of glow brite
http://www.flybox.co.uk/products/products.aspx?CategoryID=171
Just as or if not brighter than glow brite and a bit thinner so not so bulky for heads ect, i rate it highly :wink

I absolutely love that , fantastic looking fly,
tie them in a range of sizes and colours to match the hatch
and what a selection that would be. :z16
Going to enjoy tying a few of those, even if it is just for fun.
Cheers

and its on 100mtr spools hmmmmmmmm
-
I sometimes use a white tyre paint marker and paint my hooks white, a day or so before I start tying with the white glow brite
-
With a view to the inspiration from iain :z18.
A longing for home :z6
And a fine dram of Balvenie Doublewood :z3
I thought i'd just prove i have not forgotten how to tie REAL Flies :z12
Here is a March Brown emerger, using some of my traditional Dryfly stuff mixed with some of the saltwater stuff, and using some of my favourite techniques :z16
(http://i52.tinypic.com/24zkk6v.jpg)
I reckon the Don Troot will love it about 4 months time
Cheers
Sandy

Nice one Sandy .... me likes this :z16
Not much use to me though, I usually get stuck up a tree when the MBs are hatching :z4
Cheers
Mike
-
That's a tidy wee fly Sandy, nice one. :grin
Regards, John

Saltwater stuff sandy?
Is it EP fibres for the shuck and 'wing'? That's what I have used for my shucks.................shucks!
Really nice fly - just what I need to try and copy now. What's the hook?
A jammin' session last night at the vise with a Yello' May in mind.
Havin' fun with the snowshoe too

Cheers
it is EP for the underwing but I used polar fibre for the shuck
just a few strands.
The hook is an SLD but I bent it in the vise to get closer to the ones you are using
I love the shape of those tmc hooks but I've only got them in a large size.
Will have to try to get some sent out.
Got a few versions kicking about in my head :z16

Here's a Yellow May :z16.
The Yellow May duns on the Don are little darker than Vanilla, especially when they hatch out, the spinners are bright Smilie yellow but the duns are only pale :wink.
This one is tied on pale yellow thread with Camel hair, my favourite Yellow may colour.
It could do with a pale grey CdC or very light blue dun, but this was the best i could manage from my stock :z6.
Another Bent SLD hook :roll
(http://i56.tinypic.com/akevxw.jpg)
I'm enjoying this, mind you the Blue Dun/pale grey CDC would be good for BWO's and dark olives too, in fact probably all the olives on the river have grey/blue dun wings when they hatch. Might have to try and get some.
Cheers

Another cracking pattern - colours look great.
I tied a few variations last night but just couldn't get the colours that I was happy with, camel eh? - really wanted to tie some Iron Blues but I've only Natural, Olive & Brown snowshoe and I can't even see any grey on the net.
If you need any hooks sent drop me a line and I'll see what's in stock out and about.
Iain
-
Nice Caddis Pupae John :z16
Looking forward to the SBS
Iain
-
Yeah its a nice wee fly but its a tricky pattern, I'll have to word the sbs right.

-
Nice Iain ...... very nice!
-
Sweet...... :z16
I must have some sort of problem, cos i can't see any of John's flies.
I can see the SBS, but the others like the Caddis in this post, i only get the text :z8.
Will have to look into this, as i would love to see some of johns others flies :z16
Iain, i like the snowshoe idea, i have a couple, one of which is Light Dun, this could be the grey you're looking for.
If not , Snowshoe is actually good at taking marker pen :wink
Had a play at an Iron Blue today, i used a grey Pantone marker on the snowshoe, worked pretty well :z16

Sandy I'm going to do an SBS of the caddis pupae, so hopefully you will get to see that.
:z18 John
-
Very Cool. :z18
Looking forward to seeing that :z16
Sandy

This is an awesome "fishy" looking fly Sandy :z16
(http://i54.tinypic.com/2im5kbn.jpg)
-
Thats a real nice fly Sandy. I must get me some light blue dun and give it a go myself. I've uploaded the caddis pupae in the virtual gallery if you wanna see it. :grin
Cheers, John.
-
Cheers John
That works for me, love the fly :z16
Looks like it should trap a nice bubble too :wink
Sandy
-
Another must tye pattern Sandy :z16
So does the snowshoe in the light Dun appear 'whiteish'? as you've had to use a Pantone to get the colour.
Just wonder if getting pens is more worthwhile than Dun 'shoe.
Iain
-
Some real fishy looking flies there Sandy :z16
:z18
Jim
-
Iain, I have a set of the pens and I would swear by them. Thanks again for the dye, gonna have a go tonight at dying some pheasant tails.
-
Iain
I'd get some pens :z16 I find them very useful.
The dun snowshoe is a greenish grey that is perfect for a lot of dun wings
I did pick it though of the shelf, with that in mind :wink
The inky wings of the iron blue needed a wipe with a grey marker,
but only the iron blue has wings that dark :wink
having both options is great.
You don't need many pens either get some basic buggy colours
grey, golden olive, olive, yellow, red, tan and black would be good to start with.
You'll find a lot of cool tweeks become available :z16
sandy

Here is a wee size 14 grayling / troot bug :wink

Will be very interested to see what it's hook up rates are, though :wink
Nice one :z18
Sandy

Will be very interested to see what it's hook up rates are, though
just wanted to try a few things on the 14723BL Grip hook (caddis Pupae n emerger) - I haven't forgotten about your 'hook up rate' doubt Sandy, although this one'll knock 'em dead when there's MB's popping up all around - you wait and see. :z7
:z16
By the way I voted for your emergers in last months SBS so lay off! :wink
