Lochs around Aviemore
« on: 19/05/2011 at 11:29 »
Will be going up to Aviemore for a week in August and was wondering what lochs people would recommend for wild Brownies in the area. Would prefer close to the town and bank fishing as would like to take my young boy along as well to get him going so preferably not too far from the road. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Andy,

Check out the following link to the Rothiemurcas estate fishing options.  It's right next to Aviemore.  They have a stocked Rainbow lochs at their fish farm plus a couple of natural Lochs with boat fishing for Browns.

Loch Alvie also has Brown Trout fishing.

Cheers Ewan, I'm presuming both are stocked. I can't seem to use the fish wild database anymore so strugling a bit finding others.

I think that the Rothiemurcus Estate boat fishing loch is wild...

There is also Loch Insh nearby, I don't know if it is stocked but it has Brown trout in it...

Loch Gynack has been suggested to me in the past, but I've yet to make it there  :oops

Considering the fact that when I was a kid i lived in Grantown on Spey until I was 9 then moved to inverness where I lived untill I was 17 and had never fished until 2 years ago when I was 33 and living in Aberdeen i'm a bit shocked about how much I have missed out on. My son is 7 this year and I'm planning on starting him young as possible as I think this has to be one of the best ways of exploring Scotland bar hill walking. Having just come back from my second trip to Inchnadamph I am in love with hill lochs and wild brownies and would like to introduce him to some of the easier to get to ones. We go to Aviemore every year for a week with extended family and I usually get a day on the Aviemore water on my own as a birthday present from the inlaws but I fancy some of the lochs with my son for a change. He might hate it but I know I will love it  :z4

Bank fishing near Aviemore for wild browns?  In a word Lochindorb.

Failing that then Spey Dam below Newtonmore by Laggan, Laggan itself or Ericht.  Avielochan might allow bank fishing, although i'm told it's expensive?
Boats on Vaa, Rothiemurchas waters, Gynack, Morlich (pike water), Alvie (pike water), Insch (expensive pike water), Spey Dam (boat and bank) or Ruthven (a little way up the road near Inverness).

I'd still recommend Lochindorb though.

Hope this helps

I'd agree with Dryflee on this one - take the wee fella to Lochindorb on any good afternoon evening with not too much wind and he'll catch trout. The loch is great for youngsters starting out and after a few casts you'll spend most of your time trying to sort him and his fish out.

Its about 15 mins outside Aviemore and you can drive alongside the loch on one side. Parking is easy and there's even the chance of seeing the Ospreys in action.

I'd vote for this one myself and its fishing well at present - actually it fishes pretty well all the time. :z7

Whilst trolling the gay porn angling sites one night I happened upon a Paul Young 'Hooked On Scotland' Clip about the Dell Stream, a manufactured river stocked with rainbows. Sorry but that's something I'd like to try.

Does it still exist?

I'm pretty sure that was at the Rothiemurcus fishery just outside Aviemore, and I don't belive its still on the go. I'm not 100% sure though.

remember to take midge repelant, some very good sport to be had at lochindorb just as darkness arrives, black pennel, blue zulu, silver march brown and kates are my preferance :grin

You're 100% right Jim, it was given up as a good idea gone bad several years ago.
