Hi folks :z16
Thought we could have a thread for forum members to post about their days on the Dee, like we do for the Don.
Best wishes
Mike
-
I've had one day out so far this season. Lovely weather, river in perfect condition. No sign of a fish at all until quarter past four when one splashed tight in to the far bank!
Out again next week hoperfully.
Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt,
Always look forward to your Dee posts.

Great photo Matt, thanks for posting :z16

Thanks guys, one of the other rods took that one. I keep forgetting to put the big camera in the car before a days fishing.
Will hopefully get a few more trips out over the season.

I was fishing today on a Dee beat just below Banchory and was fishing with 2" aluminium tubes with a size 4 patriot single hook. I had used this set up earlier in the week on the Spey and had 2 takes which turned out to be kelts with both landed.
Today at around 12.30 on the Dee I had a pull from a fish which i initially thought was a kelt and it came to the bank quite quickly whereupon it woke up and it became apparent that I was into a small springer. After a brief but sprited fight the fish was safely landed and then returned. The single went all the way through the nose of the fish and I pushed the eye of the hook through and cut the line as this would cause less damage than pulling it ou conventionally.
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/1111_16_03_13_7_44_15.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=367)
A couple of casts later and I let go of the line early on a cast which meant that the line went out like a bag of sh*t and landed in a heap. I decided just to let the current straighten it and almost immediately the reel was screaming so I tried to slow it down and a good fish around 12 pounds came out of the water about fifteen yards above me attached to my line. I would in and gained contact but the fish fell off. I did not really desrve that one anyway so I was not to bothered.
2nd cast in the afternoon in the Kirk pot ( anyone who recognises this pool knows how much fun the wading is in there) and I got a fantastic take and the fish went ballistic and ran straight to the other side of the river. The current is extremely strong in the part of the pool and my mate Kenny came up to help me land the fish as it is not a one man job. I played the fish for about 15 minutes and finally it began to tire so I started to draw it into some slack water for Kenny to tail and right at the death the single hook pulled free. We both had a clear sight of the fish as it was on the surface and 6 feet away, we estimated it to be about fifteen pounds.
3 spingers hooked on one day and one landed, I cannot complain about that and the second one deserved to get off as i had no real right to hook it or to hold on and the 3rd one could have come off regardless of hook choice, so far I am happy enough with the single irons on the tubes.
Eddie.
-
Well done Eddie :z16
Nice tip about removing the single hook too. Might make a trip up to Banchory this week for some singles.

Well done Eddie that's a great day out.
-
Nice report Eddie. Three springers sounds like an awesome day out. How is the new hut coming on?
Matt
-
Matt,
the new hut is finished but as yet un used due to waiting for the completion certificate and getting some turf layed outside so that we do not drag all the mud in. It is looking good.
Have you been out since your last report?
Eddie.
-
One day on the opposite bank hence the question about the new hut. Sadly nothing to show for it.
Training for a charity bike ride of all things at the moment so I'm yet to wet a line on the Don. Still plenty of time for the floating line and the Sunray on the Pumphouse pool in the summer!
Cheers Matt
-
Matt,
all the best for the rest of the season and good luck with the bike ride. I have just checked my fishing diary and I have been out for 15 days this season. One day on the Tay, 3 days on the Spey and 11 on the Dee.
The score so far is 19 kelts, 1 baggot and 3 springers landed and released. I have also dropped off another six, 2 of which were definite springers and the rest kelts. I am only fishing a couple of days on the Dee in April and 4 days on the Spey at the beginning of may and then it is Troot time up the North West until I go back to Salmon fishing in August.
Tight lines,
Eddie.
-
Nice one Ed :z16
You seem to be putting yourself right in amongst the blighters.
Iain
-
Iain,
Thanks for that. I have been pretty lucky so far as there does not seem to be the normal head of fish on the East coast rivers compared to the last few years and on the lower Dee there is a definite shortage of kelts. We saw more fish at the end of last week than we have since the start of the season so hopefully this is a good sign going forward.
Eddie.

Very pretty scenery on the Dee today but a bit cold on the toes. My first day out and nothing but one dunt for my efforts.
Next time maybe.

I thought it was cold last week but that looks bl***y freezing well done for having a go. Was there anything showing?
Eddie.
-
Eddie
Only the one that took a pull at my fly broke the surface, otherwise nothing showing. At least I didn't have to break the ice to get into the pool. I have seen that happening in the old days when the river opened in February above Aboyne Bridge.
Irvine
-
Twas talking to a group of Norwiegens at the Legion last night. They are a bit fed up as they book the same week each year and last year was a nightmare as they turned up with big water 10-11 weight outfits to be met with summer conditions, this year they arrived with 8-9 weight outfits to be met with high, coloured water.
Wallys..lol :X1
Not seen any fish or had any touches in 2 days. ???

Irvine,
Nice picture looks bonnie. Any pointers as to where it was?

It is on one of the beats between Aboyne and Ballater. The low cloud and snow has completely blotted out the hills in the background so it is hard to recognise unless you know the beat well.

Anybody been fishing on the Dee lately? Any pictures or stories to share with us desk jockeys? :X2 :X2 :X2

Enjoyed a great day out in the "fresh air" with Irvine, Hamish and Ben at Glen Tanar yesterday, waving rods that are far too long, in conditions that were far too windy ..... yes a most enjoyable day out
Beautiful beat, with pools that felt fishy all day! ........ but no fish pics this time I'm afraid.
I fished hard for most of the day, so didn't get many photos I'm afraid, but I caught up with Hamish and Ben later in the afternoon and got these ones.
Many thanks for a grand day out Irvine :z16

Whats with the His and Hers matching outfits :z4 :z4 :z4
I was trying to work out if it was Big Hamish and Little Hamish or Big Ben and Little Ben or whether to just split the difference and go for Big Enus and Little Enus :z4 :z4 :z4
Cant wait for friday :z18

"Hers" isn't the same as mine Sandy, it's bigger and a different product code, waders are different too :z7

Whats with the His and Hers matching outfits :z4 :z4 :z4
Jealousy is so unbecoming Sandy, I expected more from you :wink
I was actually sporting an Orvis Helios cap for the morning until someone left all their wet kit on top of it at lunchtime so I had to opt for a spare. Therefore we were wearing entirely different outfits. Yes, you can reasonably argue that the jackets are the same, the caps, rods and lines are the same brand and we're both using Orvis reels ......but other than that they're entirely different outfits :z7
I was trying to work out if it was Big Hamish and Little Hamish or Big Ben and Little Ben or whether to just split the difference and go for Big Enus and Little Enus :z4 :z4 :z4
For you own longevity I suggest you go no further with this line of thinking ZX3
Cant wait for friday :z18
Whatever you say I, and every other sane angler (in matching outfits or not), do not believe that the soon to be patented 'Nelson' pink gimp wading outfit is going to catch on. The smaller model (to be called the half-Nelson) is also not a good idea :wink Launching this gimp extreme wading wear at the 'loops gathering is not wise either but go ahead big boy and see how it goes :z4
There may be interest in Germany though, I understand such things are popular there :z8 Shame Bernd won't make it this coming weekend.

Nice weather for trying out some lines...... not.
By the way, has that fish got all of its tail fin :?

By the way, has that fish got all of its tail fin :?
H
Yes it had a whole tail, just obscured by the leaf. It also had a few fungus covered sores on its head. Went like a train for the size of it, probably the highest drag setting I've ever used on that reel.

I hear you Trig but 'taste' analysis from someone that looks like an extra from 'The Only Way Is Scunthorpe' seems a bit dubious.

had a last minute invitation last night to come fish the Dee at Carlogie today (monday). Be rude not too...
So, one cheeky holiday monday later, just back from a grand day out - you always know when a fishing report starts that way that there'll be no fishy pictures... I caught one fish. A brown trout. sheesh. Connected briefly to another silver thing, but 99% probability it was a small sea trout.
I got the call last night while down on the grubbier parts of the Don, breathing in the shit pipe smells and wading amongst the discarded motorbike parts and old clothes line poles (complete) with concrete base, with a disinterested audience of drunks, screaming kids and other dodgy types (myself included).
Today, a slightly more salubrious setting:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/3_05_08_13_8_29_39.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=1128)
and more:
(http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/gallery/3_05_08_13_8_32_31.jpeg) (http://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=1129)
Slighty nicer surroundings than my usual... :-)
The observant, or at least the awake, among you will spot the distinctive orange of a barrio line - today I used the Barrio 6/7 Switch line on an Orvis Access 6wt, 11footer - felt very, very right for the conditions. The rod is grand, and I'm very happy with the way the Barrio switch matches it. Let the other chaps on the beat have a cast, and their responses were favourable.
I was able to cover all the water I wanted to, and never felt undergunned. enjoyable!
Back to the Dee on friday, nice!

Looks ideal! Is the water still very low?
-
Looks ideal! Is the water still very low?
I don't know the Dee well enough to say if it is very low, nothing to compare it with. But it looks low and exposed and bare. But still great
-
Nice photos Iain and great to see that you're having fun with the Switch :z16
Cheers
Mike

Iain
I agree, an 11' rod and the Barrio switch line is all you need with the water at this level. I had a day on the Dee in early July and the switch rod covered all the water easily and with a lot less effort than you would need with a "proper" rod.
The river is always a nice place to be for a day, even if the only fish you catch is a tiddler.

Fished the lower Dee this afternoon. Very low and the fish are still holding in the deep slack water. Still an enjoyable couple of hours in the fresh air. Quite a few mothers and ducklings cruising about too.

Fished the Dee at Banchory yesterday. Echo what matt said above, really... Low, low water. One fish splashed about a couple of times, but couldn't be tempted/teased/tormented into taking.
Biblical downpour mid afternoon, during which I listened to Euan Soundmixer's voicemail complaining about the bright sunshine earlier (he was next beat downstream). How I laughed as water trickled into everywhere.
No fish, but again re-inforced how nice the switch rod (6wt) and barrio switch line combo is to use in low water. Enjoyble day clambering about, and very very grateful I'd taken a new wading stick along!
a quick pic or two

pity the river is so low but it sounds like you are enjoying the switch rod.
P.S,
I will be arriving in North Uist on the 29th. I will give you a call when we get there.

Iain,

thoroughly enjoyed the day out, just great to be on a new stretch of water. Yes, the light spey rod/light double hander character of the switch rod/line combo is excellent for this time of year.
29th - excellent! I'll PM you my details/locations etc
cheers

Ah yes, low water :cry
But, fishing is fishing and a good day was had below where Iain was, despite not catching a thing.
Invery had plenty of fish showing and a moved a lot of them to my flies but no takers. One of our party had six or seven "draws" but no solid connections. It was like trout coming short.
The whole beat had fish that were very splashy in the morning before the perfect storm moved in. It was like they could sense it coming, a theory that I have entertained for 25 years or so that salmon can sense pressure changes, but that might just be BS. :z4
The lower half of the beat was exactly as I remembered it 17 years ago, which was when I fished it last. great wading, good flow, perfect fly water. :z16
I didn't have a switch rod, I had a a 15' MacKenzie with a shooting head - possibly slightly over gunned :shock, but bloody good fun. (thanks Ben, your a real gent) More practise required, but I had to keep reminding myself that other than a day on the Beauly in August last year, I hadn't used a double hander since I last fished Invery. I may have to do more of this salmon thing!
I fished on until dusk, moved a few more fish, and left a happy man. The storm was biblical and I was glad I had a really good jacket. It was in the car, half a mile away, but it is a great jacket. I huddled under the trees and didn't get a total soaking, but I left the rod below me just in case there was lightning. The overflow pipes that enter the beat from Banchory looked like dam overflows and were properly gushing out. As the rain eased I waded out and fished the outflows, but still no joy.
All in all, a fine day out and one that needs repeating. Off to check Ebay for salmon rods.
:z1

Managed a few hours after work on an ADAA beat and at bang on 6pm I had a fish on a Red Francies. Jolly good fun and very welcome in the extremely windy conditions.
ADAA ticket has been very kind this year.

Yesterday I had a short session of combat fishing, resulting in 3 salmon and a sea trout.
Salmon of 5, 7 and 12 pounds, one being sea liced and a 2 pound sea trout, again sea liced.
The 7 pounder took a size 11 Red Francis (Cock fish), the others all on a skated (half hitched) Sunray Shadow (Hens). First time I have had success on these. Lost a lot of fish including a biggy but as the single was one of Partridges new Tube fly hooks in size 12, it was a bit too small. I needed it small so the fly skated as it was dressed on a 3/4 inch narrow plastic tube and was about 3" with wing. Anything bigger and the fly fished too deep to leave a V wake.
Helped land a cracking bar of silver that was somewhere between 22-25lbs, again a red francis. Net marks too.
Photos on FaceAche ;)..and I had Singapore Noodles for tea ;)
Thats my fill for the year, not too keen on combat fishing although the bunch yesterday were all friendly enough and no issues about moving down the pool, but I do prefer a bit of peace and quiet. I did find a bit that seems not to be fished normally, but was producing fish to the angler that was fishing it, so I will maybe give that a go one morning. Needs a loooong cast so I may have to break out the 14 footer and shooting heads.
-
Was offered a day out by a very kind gent. The rain gods obliged and for the first time since the spring I arrived at a beat and there was enough water to make the beat fishable!
A few fish showing and a few heading and tailing as they ran through.
End result a wee cock fish in his tartan pyjamas! Sent back to spawn in peace!

nice one Matt. And what's wrong with your other hat?!
It was pointed out by one of the other rods that they didn't think it was manly enough for fishing acitivities. Problem is that my other bunnets are currently missing in action and unikely to be uncovered before we've moved house again.
I will decline to comment on the headwear that I have seen the rod in question pictured wearing :wink
