Hi folks

What is your favourite fly pattern for tying ..... and why do you like tying that one?

Cheers

I like tying a black skinny buzzer with copper cheeks as its easy and always produces the goods when all else fails for me  :z16

I just love to tie flies :grin

But if i had to pick something that gives me real pleasure to make it would be the Waterhen Bloa.
There is something about the chaotic elegance and simplicity that appeals to me. (and its not as easy as it looks :wink)

Any spider really. So simple, yet so effective  :z16

Cracking photo Sandy.

PS Santa bring you a new vice Sandy? That doesn't look like the trusty old Snowbee in that photo.

The feathers are from the underside of a waterhen wing.
Try Cookshill Fly tying

Mike, I hate tying flies & could never do it commercialy (even if I was good enough) I'd be bored sh*****ss. tying 11 flies of the same pattern in one sitting had me reaching for the Scotch.

For me it's more of what do I like tying at any given moment, which usually either ties in with some upcoming outing or a pattern featuring a new material or technique to me.

I'm tying small copper headed tungsten nymphs along with some Klinks, electric biot buzzers, deer hair emergers & the like so I enjoy these at the moment (in smallish quantities)

as for a particular pattern - I don't have one

bah! humbug

The trusty old snowbee, started to flare, and was looking a little scruffy :cry So having a few shekkels in the biscuit tin
And no need to buy a new flyrod or blank for a change :shock I thought i'd splash a wee bit on a nice vice.
I tried just about everything till i found one that suited the way i tie flies. Funny how when you are about to spend a bit more cash you get very picky.
So the vice in the picture is  Renzetti presentation 3000. Its Luuuuurrrverlyyy

Cameron

I get my Moorhen wings from Cookshill too :z16, but i do have a few if you struggle. Somers had some last time i was in (sportfish or lakeland should have too, as veniards do them)
The cookshill stuff is better quality feathers though :z16 Been toying with getting a whole skin, but i only use the wings so why bother :z6

Sandy

I agree. I've had a Renzetti presentation for about 5 years. Got it a half price as an ex display model. Dunno if mine is a 3000, it just said presentation on the box. Should last me a lifetime so the cost spread over quite a few years does not look so bad. :z16

Cheers

Claret bumble (or really any bumble pattern) I'd guess, very rewarding to get right and doubly rewarding to fish with  :z16

Don't be looking for a piccie :!

My current favourite fly to tie is a slight variant of a Royal Stimulator.  I like to work with elk hair and it is a fly I use a lot, in fact, almost exclusively on one stream here in Norway!  Not the quickest fly to tie but once you get in the groove to tie a few up then it goes smoothly.  This is one of those flies I like to take a bit of time over!

Other top ties
- PTN because it is quick and a hugely effective fly for me.  I also just tied one in size 26 in line with the other thread going on right now, just to see.
- Ollie Edwards' Baetis Nymph - I like the way it looks when it is finished
- The winter tying challenge flies because they actually get me thinking about what I am doing!

Funny that Hamish 'cos if you take the letters in 'Claret Bumble' - jumble them around - add a few - then take some away you get....

Right (cheeky git :!), that'll cost you a donation to the River Don Trust  :z4

If I have time, will tie one up and put on a piccie  :z15

To ensure that I actually tie the fly, I've been lent a very nice shiny new fly tying vice which is uber cool
I might actually tie a bumble or three this evening  :shock

Right, not quite a proper claret bumble (no Blue Jay left in my boxes  :roll) but a variant I probably use more often anyway :! This version has two turns light blue cock hackle and three turns of grouse at the head instead of the blue jay  :wink

I still need to learn how to take piccies of flies that come out half decently, but not too bad for all that.

This bumble has been tied on a size 14 l/s hook. Anyone care to guess what the fly tying vice is :? It's awesome :z16

Bu**er!  Nice fly Hamish - Donation on it's way to River Don Trust (that's the easiest 45 pence they'll ever make! :z4 jest).

I will drop it off with Mike tomorrow a.m. along with the Rio 3wt payment.

Mike, tried to phone you twice today (mobile voicemail) to see about a boat tomorrow but I've since been informed that it's the kids X-mas party & also the sister-in-laws father died today so I've other family matters to attend to.

Nice vise!

Iain
