Hi folks
I'm busy writing a new version of the main website at the moment and I'm a bit short of photos. If any of you have some nice ones at the local fisheries, perhaps you would be willing to send them to me, or post them in this thread so that I can copy them from here?
A few more nice River Don photos might also come in useful :wink
I have plenty for Haddo thanks :z4
Best wishes

Hi Gents,
There is no float tubing, only three boats. I'm not sure of the stocking "policy", last year I think there was only two or perhaps three stocks. However, I had some great days there last year. Choose a day when there is no wind otherwise the fish hide on the bottom and are difficult to tempt and don;t be put off by sunny days, the fish don't seem to be bothered that much. I regard Glentanar as a dry fly loch; the water is crystal clear with a slight whiskey colouration to it and the fish will come to a dry fly from a long way away.
An idyllic location as you can see from the photos.

Great photos of the Don Ewan, thanks for posting them! :z16
Wouldn't it be great if those visible shapes over the gravel in the 3rd photo were all trout :z4

You can float tube at Glen Tanar.
I spoke to the wildlife manager today and he said that provided you tell the office when you book the fishing and you follow the usual safeguards to make sure your equipment is clean and not carrying any parasites or diseases, then float tubers are very welcome. :z16
Right now the loch is frozen so best avoided unless you are a brass monkey.

Never seen a float tuber in all the years I've been going there...I hope that they would still restrict the number of rods though (e.g. a float tube + 2 boats max), as the loch is small enough as it is when three boats are out.
Access into the loch could be fun in a tube, the boat house end gets VERY weedy in the summer and the other access banks are very shallow which I would guess means that tubers would be waddling out quite a distance before they get any water to float in! The bank next to the deer gate might be best as it is deep there.

I've tubed there many times over the years. Always had permission from the estate of course. And yes, sensibly, they limit the numbers per day. I think they allow you to tube, but count it as if you are taking a boat.
Best access point for tube is from the wee point at the north bank, before you get to the deer gate, as Ewan said. There is a perfect wee shallow rocky bit to come into the loch from.
If you get there early in the summer mornings, approach the water carefully and you might see eels basking in the shallows, seen that a couple of times. But sorry, nae photos, which was mike's original topic!
Cheers,
Iain

Seriously, I had NO idea that tubes were welcome at GT.
Now it is totally at the top of my list. So if they have to book it as a "boat" day, I can see a group "TUBE" day coming on.
Three boats = 6 tubes, so who's up for a spring tube? The bank on the north side to the east of the "finger" is perfect for launching tubes and cooking lunch.
Who's up for it?

I'll take a boat Euan that way, even if it is a crap fishing day I can get some sport tormenting you cycling mofos :z4

Just check with the office when you book to see if there is a wedding on. The "finger" is a favourite location for wedding photos so they won't want a load of ugly mugs in the background behind the beautiful bride.
I'll share the boat with Ben.

If you's don't mind some younger company I'd be well up for it?! :z4 :z4

Well well, it seems we have the makings of a "grand day out".
I seem to recall that Glen Tanar has a maximum of six rods (three boats, two rods per boat) but I'm wondering if they might do a deal if we are not all on the water at the same time.
I'll contact them in the next week or two as to numbers / prices and to see if they could do a C&R only deal and allow more than six rods if it was tube only.
A little barbie on the bank at lunchtime with a beer sounds like good times to me.
Liam, your names on the list.
Watch this space..... :z16
