Title: Wet salty fun ;)
Post by: Rob Brownfield on 05/08/2008 at 13:11
Went to Cove with a 9 weight, shooting head and sand eel pattern flies...woohoo..fun!! Ok, I only briefly got attached to something unseen, but it was great fun none the less. I will be back :)

Really was interesting casting from rock ledges and stripping the fly back fast, waiting for a Mackeral, Pollock or hopefully a Bass to smash into your fly. Whatever it was i hooked steamed off at high speed with a real "rapid vibration" type fight..sure it was a mackeral...the speed was amazing...was on for only 20 seconds or so but my heart was pounding...can't wait for my next session!

Cool, Im glad somebody else on the forum has taken to fishing in the salt in the north east with the fly road, I often fish off ''the backies'' at stonehaven during slack tide for seatrout if the cowie and carron are at there bare bones  :wink Just out of curiosity were you on a full floater?  I often use one of those Airflo forty plus intermediates (with a stripping bag as they are a nightmare for tangling) just to cut through the surface not really to fish at any more depth if you get me?  Where abouts at cove were you?  I have never experimented up there but have had manys a coalie and small pollack especially on big white ipns etc and generally white flashy lures (which the seatrout are more than willing to hit also if you can cover them)

do you have to have a salt rod to do this as ive always fancied giving it a go! Would I get away using my Greys 7wt for a try? will the salt water damage the rod/reel/line at all?

I would also like to know where you went :D

Your 7wt should do just fine, the saltwater rod i use is a 9 foot peregrine which is rated for an 8wt but i used to use my 7wt sage and had no problems using it either, it all depends on the weight of the flies your trying to turn over etc but provided you dont use super heavy lead headed flies etc then you will be fine, most size 8 white trout lures and sparklers work just fine though specific larger saltwater flies may be better but these have done the trick for me so far  :z4 as for salt water damage i wash my rod, lines and reel thoroughly with fresh water as soon as i get home and have had no problem with corrosion etc as yet and have been using the same reel (an abel) for the past 5 years  :z16

yea if i ever get down to the sea i planned to give it all a good wash, as its a freshwater trout rod.

Dont spose anyone would fancy taking me for a cast one night or weekend. Never fished the sea from the bank let alone with the fly. Ive been on fishing trips with school all those years ago with feathers etc.

Might tie up some salt water patterns, will make a change from the small trout ones I normally tie. Not sure if I have big enough hooks, but I have a plan hatching for some Tube Salt Flies hehe. Thought? any takers to show me the coastal fly fishing techniques?

EDIT: im located in aberdeen :D

Sorry for the delay in replying!

Right, I was using a fast sink shooting head on a 9 weight Orvis saltwater rod and Mach IV saltwater reel...BUT..i used to use an 8 weight reservoir rod and standard Magnum reel.

Lines are Rio shooting heads OR Airflo Striper cold saltwater floaters and intermediates.

As for Bass..I am not saying anything..it gets me into trouble..but yes, you can catch bass on the NE coast.

Luckyshott...if you fancy a few hours after work, I am up for it!

Yea that would be great, I work in Tullos so handy for the coast. Think it will have to be a night next week as I'm booked up this week haha. Im starting to worry that i'll ruin my New Greys Freshwater trout rod with all the salt, reassure me again if i give it a REALLY REALLY good wash after it will be ok hehehe  :z13 Where would you suggest we meet up and go?

Hey boys just came back from west coast holiday with the family and boy oh boy did i do alot of fishing (most on the fly:z16) and i ihad some great sport. It was mostly pollock and coalies the biggest being around 4 pounds so there was nothing big but there was also the odd mackerel thrown in so it was great fun  :grin The only flie that i used though was a polar fibre minnow tyed up in sandeel colours, they didnt like anything else i chucked at them so i was a bit stumped on that one but overall it was great fun with me catching in excess of 70 fish all on the fly  :z16 :z12

I work in Altens so easy enough to hit Cove or some such place!

Cant reassure you about the Greys I am affraid...a few years ago yeah..not sure these days. The only bit you need to worry about is the reel seat. I have heard of folk lightly oiling the seat with WD40 or such like before fishing in the sea..but for infrequent visits a good wash should be ok. :)

Cool so just up the hill from me, I'm still really up for this and im sure the rod will be ok for one shot in the salty depths. If I really get into it I might buy a salt rod in the future. OK so Im free every night this week if you are? Would it be an idea to meet in the Thistle hotel car park or somewhere like that? just after 5, thats when I finish.

That sounds dodgy!..lol...

Thursday seems a good bet..High Tide is just before 6pm..better to fish an incomming tide but it should give us some action.

so its a mish mash of trout materials but I'm pretty happy with my use of what I had. YES I used paper, i highlighter and black pen to make the eyes hehe

So how many budgies perished for all those feathers?!  :z4
Seriously though, iv just started tying my own flies and sadly some of the trout dry flies iv attempted have ended up looking much like them.
I  bet the mackerel will love the blue and white beasty!
Title: Re: Wet salty fun ;)
Post by: Rob Brownfield on 13/08/2008 at 09:23
They will catch..deffo! I tend to have some that are very "lifelike" and others that are litterlu 4 white chicken feathers with a bit of sparkle. If i am hitting Pollock/Saithe or coalies then I use the lifelike ones as those fish dont have teeth. If the Macks turn up then I switch to the "cheaper2 flies as the Macks have small needle like teeth.

As for tomorrow..do you know where Cove harbour is? Better to meet there I think because the traffic arround The Thistle is a nightmare just now and its been taking me 30 minutes to just get past the place the last few nights.

Also, I finish at 4 so i was going to go straight to the harbour and have a few casts until you turned up :)

Use to live in Cove and have often thought about fly fishing in the gully to the left of the harbour.

really interested to how you got on!

well was a good wee sesh, will definately be giving it another go, Rob caught a small Pollock and (said I was going to ROb) almost caught the smallest fish ive ever seen ahahahahhaha slashed at the fly as i was lifting it out.

The tide was going out so didnt really have much of a chance. Next time, next time  :z16

Ok..ok..so I got it wrong..I looked at the wrong figures on the tide table and arrived at low tide, not high!!..d'oh!
http://www.pol.ac.uk/ntslf/tides/?port=0038

Next time though :)...great fun all the same. I think i might have to use a lead core though as a super fast sink was no where near as deep as it could have been. The Pollock took a size 4 "Hollofusion" beige and white sandeel I dressed. About 4 inches long. Its strange to be fishing in the sea with flies that are considerably SMALLER than the ones I use in lochs!..lol

Next time Cameron, next time!! :)  :z18

haha no worries, what time was High Tide???

Next time I'll be ready with some flies of a more suitable nature (gonna head to Summers tomorrow maybe). Also gonna buy some heavier mono as the rocks just CHOMPED throught my 6lbs flourocarbon stuff, save that for the trout hehe.

thanks again ROb, and let me know next time you fancy having another bash, also for the Pike you mentioned :D  :z13

Title: Re: Wet salty fun ;)
Post by: Rob Brownfield on 19/08/2008 at 17:58
Anything that is vaguely sandeel or snall baitfish shaped. Also, small shrimps in brown, pink and pearl should also work, especially if fished over the top of those rocks we where on last week.

What sort of stuff did you buy? If you want to buy some flies, the Orvis shop in Banchory has a range of saltwater flies (fulling mill I believe...can see them on the FM website) in just now..including plenty of sandeel, shrimp and even crab shaped ones. :)

Hi Luckyshot66,
                      Nice looking flies well done.

Can I make two constructive observations which I hope will add to your salt water tying
if you are designing flies with long tails ,(and you should !).

1) Many fish will pull at the long tail , pollack and sea trout will often  do this , not so much saithe and mackerel . (!)  For those occasions it is useful to include a "stinger" hook ,( often a treble in the press ), a barbless single is kinder , mounted on a short wire tied ,(glued !) , onto the shank of the leading hook before dressing . Try to hide the second hook but don't mask it. Ythan terrors come to mind for us old folks.

2) In order to prevent the long tails twisting around the hook bend ,(and they often do) , incorporate a "tail guard" . You will quickly find that having to fix the fly after each cast is a right pain in the Erkie.
This is simply a loop of hard nylon (I use 30lb), tied onto the very end of the hook shank , just before the bend  , again before dressing . This encourages the tail to stay and do what it is meant to.

One other thing on the subject of long tails . If you tie in a length of strong nylon to the length of your tail,(yes , 30lb , I,m an Aberdonian), again, before dressing the rest of the fly,  this protects the tail materials  and your flies will last twice as long. Try it.

Last tip . I like flies with a "end tail " of flashy material . You can easily incorporate flash in any dressing. just leave the flash longer ,remembering your "protective measures" . Lefty Kreh called this a "Bangtail" .
For good reason.

Hope that makes some sense .

Paul.

Cameron,
Can't make tonight, Cass was due to fly back from Barcalona last night but the plane was cancelled due to the accident in Madrid. Due back tonight so i have to shoot off to the airport :(

Pity as I have a heap of new flies to try. What Paul was saying above is good advice, although I dont think you need a stinger unless after Sea Trout...as you saw, even small pollock hammer the flies! :)

I use a 30lb Amnesia loop under the tails of my lare Pike Bunny Bugs along with a wee bit of bucktail to prevent the rabbit strip wrapping the fly, but on my sandeel patterns for the sea I use a "core" of crinkly nylon winging material (looks like stiff 3 lb line) which gives the other flashy materials some rigidity and stops the wrapping. Also makes them pretty much tooth proof..which does not matter with Pollock etc, but the Macks can shread a fly.

Ok..the fly in its gob is a Gummi Minnow..anout 1.5 inches long!!  :oops

Found some LOVELY ledges etc that made perfect casting platforms. Had to find a sheltered bit as there was a strong southerly wind..but when i did find a spot I wish someone was there to witness the casting! Thats outbound line is awesome! the whole lot was gone with a single haul (as Ben from Orvis said it would :)) and it was pulling the backing off my reel!

Next time I need a witness :)

Myself an Rob went last week for a wee bit, Wind was pretty strong making casting interesting. Rob lost a nice mackrel of around 2lbs but thats all we saw.

Will head out soon I hope but off on hols a week on sat so quite again :D

Weather has been a bit iffy recently...what with wind and rain. I believe the Mackeral shoals are starting to split up now :(

Still have not gone for the Bass yet..must do that very soon!!!!

Also trying to suss out when the best fishing is. The guys down south favour low tide, but they are targetting Pollock, Bass and Mullet. Low tide up hereproduces tiny Pollock and nothing else. An incomming tide produces Mackeral, BUT, you cannot get to the good rock outcrops and are forced to fish in unfavourable areas.

Anyone on here know of good places to SWFF off the shore? We have been going to Cove harbour

Still have not gone for the Bass yet..must do that very soon!!!!

YES ROB, before the weather get even worse!

Paul, its the best fun I have had in years!!!

For a start you are fishing pretty much the unknown, for fish that pull harder than any trout size for size, over water that probably has not been fished with a fly before. Every fish is as wild as wild can be, no stunted fins or pellet induced bellies. Every time the tip slams over you dont know if its a pollock, coalfish, mackeral, wrasse, cod (biggest so far is 4.5 pounds!) or one day..please... a Bass.

In the pub in the evening I can sit there with the other fisherman and chat "fish"...normally I get the  "Great day, 4 rainbows, all about a pound and a bit" or "No salmon today, river to high, lo, dirty, clear, fast, slow" while I sit there quietly knowing that i have fished somewhere totally different and have not been on a stocked hole in the ground or standing in a river while someone tells me where to cast, what fly to use, makes my lunch, and even wipes my bum if I wanted them to  :z4 :z4 :z4 :z4 :wink

Seriously..SWFF is the next black ;)

I agree and have been bitten by the SWFF bug, BIG TIME! still haven't caught anything  :z8 but enjoy the challenge. And where did you get this 4.5lbs one Mr Rob?

I do however think the stockies have their place. If everyone was to jsut fish the rivers etc there would be no fish left to catch!

Rob will you make my lunch for me next time? give me the fly and tell me where to cast, need to catch a feckin sea fish!!!  :z13

Cameron, the cod came from Peterhead breakwater..had a few there now :) All taken on a lead core shooting head and fly brought up the wall on the inside of the harbour. Cast out...feed out the running line and some of the backing so it gets down deep, then strip fast!

Iain, Salmon fishing, ace??..Nahhh! Gave it up after 5 years of trying..loved the casting, the wading etc, did not like the cost associated with an empty river ;) The only Salmon i have taken have all been by mistake!!...and the only one that put up a "proper" fight was a grilse that took a dry fly on the Don :) I have decided I am going to have a "proper" day on the Dee, ghillie and all..when I have saved enough! :(

So will we be heading up once iI'm back from Holiday? :D

I used to fish for salmon all the time, loved to (was handy living a stones throw from the Don, in Strathdon). Need to get out again some time soon, and for trout!!!
