I'm always hearing Anglers being advised to take the cock salmon but return the hens! does anyone have any opinions on this subject ? I've always thought cocks and hens pair up so whats the point in the redds being overpopulated with hens with no boyfriends !!!

Welcome to the forum, I think the reasoning is that males can fertalise more than one females eggs.

Thanks Jim, I'd feel much happier knocking a cock salmon on the head if there was definate proof that one male fertilised several females but I've read loads on the subject and am not convinced ! does anyone know of any literature that proves the point !

return all Salmon and let nature decide, simples!

You have waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy to much time on your hands mannie :z4 :z4 :z14
Parr, known as 'Precocious Parr' can also fertilise the eggs of the hen, nipping onto the redd under the nose of the cock fish. :z16

Just so, which suggests the best course of action is simply to put them all back. Makes sense to me

Read Henry Williamsons Salar the Salmon he writes about precocious parr fertilising the eggs, I worked in a hatchery and we used Precocious Parr to make up the amount of milt we needed for the job, so nature will take care of its own. I worked on Loch maree when they were trapping seatrout for breeding we trapped over 30 male trout and only 3 females
I suppose it depends on stock evaluation whether you have C&R easgach1
