Given that there’s only five days until the (migratory fish) season opens up here on the Ness, here’s a discussion starter:-
“If you could only choose one fly pattern to fish with in the future, regardless of species targeted, which would it be?”
NB: it can be tied any size, hook or tube, and variants are allowed within reason.
Mine would be the good old silver stoat 🎣

Salmon would be gold body Willie Gunn, trout Hares lug.

No fence-sitting I’m afraid Eddie: the challenge is choosing ONE fly to rule them all :z16
-
For me it would be the Black Pennell.
It works on wild lochs for Brown Trout, rivers for Brown trout and Sea Trout, fisheries for Rainbow Trout and although I haven't tested the theory with success.....I bet it would take a Salmon on the River.

I'm with Stephen on this - Black Pennell :z16

Yes, Black Pennell without a doubt for me.
I can confirm it's effectiveness for salmon on rivers and lochs Steven👍
I have them in my boxes size 16 - 6, singles and doubles.

As a one fly only deal, for all species, I'd agree with that :z16 and I have had salmon off the river on the BP and it was a lot of fun with a 15lb fish on a size 14 fly and a trout rod!!
-
Yep, Black Pennell for me too :z16

I'll go radical and say a small monkey
( and i don't mean the one that is on the loose up here in the highlands !)

Fair enough then , changing my mind to the modified pennel.
