Interesting one Kerry, I've not tied spiders with a bead.

Is the forward facing hackle against the bead by design? My approach would probably have been to have the hackle in front of the bead.

Yes, Japanese origin. The forward facing hackle is said to pulse in the water especially when dibbled or manipulated, rather than being flattened against the hook shank with the standard tying.
Yet to try them out….
