Title: Attracted to sparkle!
Post by: Rob Brownfield on 14/01/2014 at 16:23
I nipped into Angus Angling on the way back from Saturdays Grayling trip, and oh my, does he have a shop full of sparkles! lots of stuff I have not seen in other shops.

£50 lighter I walked away with lots of awesome materials (mostly Hareline) for a batch of spring flies for the Pike and maybe even the salmon.

Experimentation time!!

Even at Scone, he always has a decent spread and fly tying gear is a PITA to take away to a show.

Talking of the Game Fair, seems the tackle shop in Dundee on the Kingsway has decided never to do the Game Fair again and may even be closing. Shame as thats the only place I know North of Edinburgh that does maggots and Savage Gear pike lures.

Yes, Robbie at Anglers Choice is hoping to get out of the game and retire, I wouldn't speculate about the reason for this Rob.
I don't believe he will be at Scone this year, another gone form Anglers row  :z6

Today I mostly bought:
Brown and green grizzle mini marabou for sculpins
Barred nd speckled Crazy legs, also for sculpins
Various shades of Ice Wing Fibre (Wish I had picked up gold for willie gunn bodies) mainly for building heads on things like Kelly Galloups Ice Pick
Various two tone zonker strips
Big Game Dumbell eyes. I might try these on my version of a Sunray Shadow. I want big eyes just like a real sandeel.

In addition to Anglers Choice, Country life one of the few tackle shops in Edinburgh is about to close.  Neither are good news for me.  Thank goodness I can still rely on Neil to get stuff to me promptly!

Just heard that Gow's in Dundee has shut the doors this week, if you're into shooting and stay in Dundee the nearest shops are in Perth, Blairgowrie, Montrose or Arbroath.

Guys its obvious that these are hard times so if your buying online, give you local ish shops the benefit.  If you can get a pound off down south, give your local guy a call and at least give him a chance to match it.
It's in our own interests.

Interesting. I was in the only tackle shop left in Aberdeen a few days ago and the manager quite rightly said that you would not go into Tescos, your local corner shop, the butchers, or pretty much any other shop and ask for/expect a discount. Tackle shops seem to be very unique in this.

The other problem is that my local shop cannot carry many of the items I wish to buy for various reasons, but the main one being stock turn over. No point in them carrying stock that may sit on the shelves for years (Look at some of the items in Sloans. They have stuff sitting from 10 years ago!). I have to say though, just about the only things I buy online are rod building materials and items I know my local shop cannot or would not take in.  :z16

Correct,if i buy in bulk i go online, but for everything else its rod an creel , a small shop in carronshore who are very helpful and will go out of there way to get you anything they dont have in stock :z16
