Kate McLaren Variant

Hook: Kamasan B 400, size 10 to 14
Thread: Black
Rib: Fine Silver Wire
Tail: Fluo Green or Fluo Yellow UV Krystal Hair Angel Hair
Body: Black Marabou (Dubbed)
Body Hackle: Black cock palmered
Head Hackle: Irish Olive cock 3 to 4 turns and tied back.

Step 1: Lay up touching turns of Black thread to above hook point.

Step 2: Then tie in the Fluo Green or Fluo Yellow UV Krystal Hair.

Step 3: Trim to length you require and then tie in a single strand of
           Fine Silver Wire.

Step 4: Tie in your Black Cock Palmering Hackle.

Step 5: Chop up some Black Marabou & dub onto thread.

Step 6: Make a slim body up to a point behind the eye – ensure you
leave plenty of room for a head!

Step 7: Wind Palmering Hackle in evenly spaced turns towards the
head & tied off & trim.

Step 8: Run the Rib in the opposite direction to the head and secure.

Step 9: Tie in your Irish Olive Cock Hackle and make 3 or 4 turns
and tie back, keeping some space between the Hackle and
the eye of the hook for your head.

Step 10: Whip finish, cut the thread & apply a few drops of varnish.

I find that by using Marabou as a dubbing material you increase the amount of colours/shades
available to you.

The fly was inspired by the hedgehog series of dries. The tying is quite simple.

Hook - #10 Kamasan b830 2x Ls

Body - Dubbed mix of bright green SLF & bright green glister

Tail & Wings Black marabou.

The wing body combination is a classic early blend. You could have any of your favourite mixes.

My thoughts were to add mobility by having several separate finer wings rather than one big bunch, should help the wrap around problems too I hope.

Tight lines

Hook : Partridge Salar single size 9 - 11
Thread : Yellow
Tag : Flat silver tinsel
Tail : Golden Pheasant topping
Body : rear half - holographic gold flat tinsel, front half - claret Ice Dub
Hackle : Barred golden olive marabou
Wing : Fiery brown Arctic fox tail

The tying is standard for any hair wing salmon fly except for the hackle. Use the non-fluffy tips of the marabou plumes and tie in in small bunches then spread evenly around the fly before tying tight. Just like putting bronze mallard on a dabbler. The idea is to have a long supple hackle that will flutter in low summer flows.

Hi folks

Well, February has arrived and is looking a tad nippy :z6

Continuing with the idea of creating a fly using a tried and tested material in a new and original way, a fly that will be marked on originality, use of material, tying prowess and its potential to catch fish...........

The material for February's fly will be Pearl Tinsel :wink

So let the creative juices flow and lets see what you all come up with :z3

Best wishes
Mike

Hi Jim

February's material is Pearl Tinsel ........... and since it could be a wee while before "the judges" can get together, you can enter a late marabou fly for January as well if you like?

Best wishes
Mike

HOOK-b175 size 10,12,14

THREAD-olive uni size 8/0

TAIL- mustard olive marabou

BODY-chopped marabou same colour, dubbed on using wax.

RIB-pearl mylar - marabou same as above

THORAX COVER-marabou same as above

THORAX-olive ice dub

I,ve fish this pattern quite a lot, from the small still waters to the big waters such as menteith rutland gratham etc and has produced fish.Fish on the point with a few daiwl bachs or buzzers behind on a floater or fish on a sinking line point or dropper doesn,t really matter, try in colours black and orange these work well when the waters coloured.all the best and tight lines for 2008.

This fly, the T&A Bunker, was origanally designed by American Kelly Galloup to imitate.... the action of a jointed Rapala. It uses a trailer hook and a lead hook, jointed by a loop of monofilament. On both hooks Marabou is used for the body (palmered) and for the wing. The pattern requires ram's wool for the head, but this variation is very effective. The original was tied with an olive wing over a white body.

Trailer hook: #8 TMC 105
Body: 2 palmered plumes of marabou
Wing: marabou
Loop: nylon monofilament
Beads: glass beads from a craft store

Lead hook: #4-6 TMC 8089
Flashy tail: flashabou or similar
Body: 2 palmered plumes of marabou
Wing: marabou
Head: flashy chenille
Eyes: doll eyes

This colourcombination works for me in the Dutch polders when I'm fishing for winterpike (no need for half chickens where I fish...). Go crazy with this pattern and see what happens!

Hook Size 10 B175 or equivalent (one used are hyabusa)
Hot spot dubbed Orange Marabou
Body olive micro chenile
Tail Olive Green marabou
Gold Bead 3mm
Rib peacock tinsel (lightly stretched)
Thread Green 6/0 supergrip

This is a variation on a fly that has caught a lot of fish I usually tie them without the orange hot spot. It is a fairly basic fly but very effective. I fish it on a floating line with a jerky retrieve at the point with a spider on a dropper. It is best fished near the edge or over weed beds.

Cheers Kev
