Title: If you had to choose only one fly.
Post by: mac_the_dog on 02/03/2008 at 20:57
Have seen this question on other fly fishing forums, and thought it might be fun to see what would be the answers from local fly fishermen here in Aberdeenshire.

If you could fish only one fly for a whole day, what would that fly be?

I have to be honest I cant make up my mind. Depends on the time of the year. But Id probably go with either a GRHE or a black buzzer......... but then again I might go with.......  :z8

Good fly choices "mac" :wink

Are we thinking of one fly for a stillwater, or one for using on both stillwaters and rivers?

Yes, the answers will be interesting

I'll be honest I only fish stillwaters now, but it would be interesting to see the answers for both stillwater and river.
When I fished the Deveron many years ago I nearly always fished a wet Black Pennel and a dry Adams.

Cheers

Tough - depends on so many things......

Aint that the truth, having lots of time to myself for the last few weeks and suffering from major cabin fever
Despite Mr livingstones best efforts :z16 much appreciated as they were.'
I've asked myself this question rather too many times :cry

If it was to catch fish then i would probably have to choose a black spider, if it was to have have fun fishing i'd have a HE F-fly

Incidently, having mulled this over rather often i have come to the conclusion that having a large selection of flies is showing the fish the respect it deserves
And where i can put together half a dozen flies that will catch me fish all year, everywhere, i choose to have a fly for every hatch and few others as well.
I reckon it makes me feel a much more rounded and appreciative angler to know i am trying to fool the fish with something they are eating and having the right fly for the occasion not only increases confidence (vital for success) but gives a greater satisfaction when you catch the fish.

Never mind, home soon  :z18

Black shuttlecock CDC or a Black n Red bead buzzer, cant beat them

If l have to fish a  "lure"  its a Redbead Damsel in a size 10.

Looking back at last years diary these three flies caught the majority of my fish.

This one. Hares lug and plover.

Put it on an intermediate and it works as a nymph. Put it on a floater and it works as a rising pupae or a failed emerger. i guess it might even work as a dry but I haven't tried that

But as this is a hypothetical question I will continue to carry the usual four assorted boxes everywhere :z4

a hard question indeed some flies become fashionable others have been around for yonks  I tend to fish nymphs a lot for rainbows on small and large stillwaters I think the main reason for this is the decline in terrestrial insects which tends to keep the troot doon Ihave been fishing for half a century  yes Im no parr and have long smolted  what do you think on the declline I remember when the air used to be black with insects in Summer  I wonder if gaudy lures fished on sunk lines would have taken brownies on the hallo;d Harray back then     What about the Don how has it affected the brownie fishing?

Yes I do notice the lack of insect  life nowadays, It is more noticeable further south though , I normally spend a week in north Yorkshire in July , at one time driving round at that time of year your car  would be covered in dead beasties, different story today   :cry

On still waters blobs or pink okey dokey. Blobs can be fished on the surface or deeper while okey dokeys are just good fun.
