As it says guys, recommendations needed for a tube fly vice.
It's just possible that the attachment I used (up until twenty minutes ago) just flew across the kitchen table and ended up in the bin with the comment 'useless bastarding idea, what the f*ck did I buy that for :?' at the right sort of volume to disturb the cats sleep, and he was outside in the wood shed.
I'm not interested in any things to 'add' to my current vice, I want something fit for purpose.

Wee ginger bar steward is doing OK thanks Marc :z12 he will never recover full use of his leg, but he gets around and that's good enough - he'd only get into even more trouble if he was fully 'repaired' again ZX2

Eumer one that I use is pretty good H.

I have the Eumar one, hmmmm..not sure about it. I have had trouble with Slipstream tubes spinning even though the needle inside is as far in as it will go. I also stab myself a fair bit with smaller tubes...that needle is vicious!
I like the idea of the HMH one but not sure how it would cope with plastic tubes.
-
Never had a Slipstream tube spin on mine Rob ???
Are you taking the liner out before you tie or doing some other crazy shit with the tube before you put it into the vice?
Cheers
Ben
-
Besides performing an ancient Celtic ritual to bring me luck, I am just sliding the tube straight onto the needle.
Interestingly, it is only the Cu ones that have this issue, the ally ones are fine. I wonder if I have a duff batch of CU tubes? (Bought on ebay cheap). Probably answered my own question there!
Still does not stop me stabbing myself though!..lol

You can get professional help for that :z16

Rob,
Why are you using the tapered needles for lined Cu tubes? Use the ones with the end and then wind the vice out to nip the tube against the end on the needle, you tube!!
Ben
-
Well, considering I bought the vice from you and the only attachment in the box was a long tapered needle, I guess I must have been a tube ;)
Are you telling me I have bought faulty goods? :X2
-
Faulty no, maybe missing a pack of three additional needles but, as all the needles come sealed into a pack together I'd be very surprised that you got just one needle. Drop in past the shop with the packaged vice and I'll check the contents and replace anything that isn't there that should be there. There should be three tapered needles and three "stoppered" needles.
Cheers

Sorry, been on the toilet for a few days! That vice I got was on display, I seem to recall you going through to get a bpx, then dismantaling the one on the shelf.
I am not even sure I still have the packaging.

Eumer vice has arrived..... quick glass of vin plonk rouge and I'll whip something up

But... I haven't quite finished making the head look 'tidy'.
H

You'll be gutted when you lose that one, doesn't look like a 5 minute tie. Get some super glue on the front, that should tidy it up a bit :z7
-
Teflon hard as nails will just have to do. Besides...... isn't it just Peter that uses superglue for tying with :z7
-
I like that H.
You going to roast it or barbecue it?
Seriously though, me also likey your new toy. I could have done with that 15 years ago...

Nice, I like the spey plumes (I'm assuming that's what the collar hackle is).
I was looking at them at the weekend down in Forfar but as the Trout season is all but here I didn't buy any.
Will have to give them a try, are they robust?

Cheers Iain and it's a good guess..... but it's not right. In fact the hackles used in that fly are the 'bases' of Schlappen hackles :z17

Have used the schlappen this way before and the answer is yes - they hold up to fishing and fish no bother at all, same as any other feather.
You have to be a wee bit canny on prepping the hackle but the good news is you get the 'traditional' schlappen hackle for one or more flies and the 'fluffy plume' section at the base of the hackle for another 'spey' type hackle.
This is a good thing :z16
H

Shi*! , I normally throw those bits oot. :X1
I'll give it a go :z16

Pleasure to be of service :z16
Give me a buzz or drop me a PM, will explain what I mean about "prepping" the schlappen

Split the stem? Thats what I do on the pike flies, get two hackles then . I prefer the fluffy Schlappen base as it seems to hold up to teeth a bit better than the Spey plumes, and its a damn sight cheaper.
-
Rob,
do you fly fish for Pike? :X2

I've not bought spey plumes but I agree that the schlappen 'fluff' holds up fine to abuse, which is a good thing  Not sure the finish is quite the same as the plumes but really I don't think the fish care too much about that to be honest :z2

Hamish,
I gave one a whirl last night and it looks sidney simply devine to my eyes but when I took some photo's it looks... well.... not as yours does, so I didn't post the picture.
Although I'm happy to tie & fish away with the results I'd be interested in your method of prep.

Will prep a feather or three, take some pics and post them later.

OK, small schlappen feather stripped to where I want it for 'spey plume' duty:

Is that any different to what you were doing Iain :?
H

H,
not a million miles from what I was doing but I see that you have selected a feather with a nice slim stem, my selected one was thicker which gave me (I knew it would) a bit of a head trouble. Not insurmountable but I'll take more care in selection in future.

Cool  With the chunkier schlappen feathers you can splt the stalk with a razor blade (other cutting devices are available for those under restriction orders etc) and get two plumes for the price of one. However the catch to that is unless the cape has been really well dyed the chances are you're going to have some white 'stalky shit' left over which is bit of a pain. You can hide it when dressing the fly but I try to make sure I search out the best of the thin schlappen as it saves a lot of grief.
Nice flee by the way.... might borrow that pattern :z16

run a permanent marker over the offensive 'stalky shit' before tying it in :wink
-
Yeah, tried that Marc and haven't been satisfied with the results, perhaps it takes more 'penmanship' than I'm prepared to put it in :!
-
hi Hamish,
it can't be about 'penmanship' as it's simply a mater of running the marker tip or side of it along the stem. hmmm, maybe the markers you tried weren't up to the job. :z8
cheers,
marc
-
....... hmmm, maybe the markers you tried weren't up to the job. :z8
Quite possible Marc, but they were 'sharpies' which are about the best marker pens I've used. Admittedly they're not 'specialist' markers and I'm sure there would be something on the market that would have done the job better. Truth is, I couldn't be arsed finding anything that did the job better :z4

fair enough but don't come complaining your "stalky shit" is untidy then.... :X2 :-* :z4
