Hmmm, I'd love to be able to just go out and buy some fishing wheels, but what would I buy? :roll
Would it be a Landrover, a Fiat Panda, a Daihatsu Terios, a BMW with the funny tyres, or would you forget all the 4X4 and just go for an Alfa!

Do not bother with the Alfa, it really is that simple. You have to be a special kind of idiot to own an Alfa, I know I own one....... :X1
If I were buying on the second-hand market looking for a fishing car which can carry a few mates, all our gear, rides nicely, is cheap to run, is practical, doesn't cost a fortune to run and has enough off road 4x4 ability then I'd look at trying to find a low mileage diesel Kangoo Trekka.
Actually.... I am looking for one of them or something very like it :wink
I wouldn't bother with the Terios, it's nice enough for two but not a 'boys' fishing car. It's also quite gay.
Panda 4x4 of all types are good, but like the Terios is a wee bit on the small side.

Outside choice :? How about a Jaguar X-type estate 3.0 or 2.5 AWD :? I would :cool:
If it were a single vehicle that had to multi-task then I'd probably bite the bullet and opt for a Skoda Yeti.
Yes, the boot space is small but they drive well, are excellent off road (4x4 version), they're reliable and they've just become the standard replacement vehicle for Coastguard Sector Managers (like me :! ah ha :!).
The choice really is almost endless.

Hamish, I am the idiot landrover owner personified. I have a 30 year old petrol landie and a diesel range rover. The landy is more reliable than the range rover, as fishing cars they can get me and may mates anywhere (when they are running) and you can get shed loads of stuff in them.
I too like the Skoda Yeti.

Special idiot here. Quite right H! Alfas are great for getting to the fishing, if the fishing is in Beauly and you live in Edzell! Or Beauly to Lochinver, but the rough bits after that, now that's a different story.
Actually my GT has a large boot for all the gear, comfort for getting you there and back, diesel for frugality, and style to be talked about at the hut. But then it hasn't broken down yet :z4
Skoda Octavia Scout is the dogs danglies Mike, fwd, comfort, diesel value for money.
Skoda Fabia estate in 2nd place - as above without fwd.

You need something that nips on but doesn't suck fuel at an alarming rate, that is comfy but not a sports car and not nickable (Skodas are not nickable)

I have done and am still doing the Landy bit, but as a fishing vehicle, nah, no chance! Far to easy to break into and no cover for luggage in the boot. At one stage I had one key that would open my Disco, 90 and 110, and it was not even a Landy key :) Economy is not great either at 25(ish) mpg on diesel, or 10-12 on my V8 :)
Nah, I have to say that the best fishing wagon I have and still own is a Subaru Outback. The only car I might get instead is the diesel version.
Far too many good features to list here, but just nip up to the British Legion in Banchory just now, you will see quiet a few in the car park belonging to anglers, and good reason too.
Briefly though, proper 4x4 with lo ratio gearbox, 9" of ground clearance, capable of comfortable cruising on the motorway or negotiating farm tracks, mud and snow. MASSIVE boot that holds a 3 piece 15 footer without the seats going down, has a proper luggage cover to hide away your gear, the boot is at the right height to sit on when doning waders etc. Releable with an engine that will easily do 150,000+ miles, and econonical to at 32-40 mpg for my Petrol auto, depending on roads.
Best feature for me, heated leather seats that allow me to climb straight in from the river, still in my waders, and warm up in minutes :)..oh, and with rod carriers fitted, the shape of the car means that a 15 footer does not over hang the back or stick up in the air, it sits very low across the top, thus not hitting branches on country roads ...unlike Landies :)

Oh..did the Alfa bit too...interesting experience...it was rebuilt so many time in the 3 years from new that when we handed it back, it feld like a new car...literally :)
Cracking car to drive though, but the new GT86 beats it ;)

A matress fits the Subaru with the seats down :z16 However, I use a blow up materess and can comfortably sleep in the back and still have room for my gear :)
Eddie, my 110 has a "carawagon" conversion inside so the rear bench seat folds down into a double(ish) bed :) Trouble is, with the amount of glass in the back of a County SW, I have had to put drop down blinds all round :)

Have had a Fabia Estate for last two and a half years and had absolutely no issues with it and very economical. In another four years when I "retire" from my current role would like to get a Defender which has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis. Might have to be a second car if I can get away with it depending on what I am doing then to earn a crust.

Fancy a Mitsubishi Outlander or Peugeot 4007, or Citreon C Crosser (same car really).
Subaru Outback looks ok as well. Current x trail not bad certainly on the fishing front bags room, gets you to the places you want to go etc, just getting a wee bit long in the tooth
